This time on the show we reminisce about the ritualistic Friday night trip to the local video store, and check out a few early game rentals of mine.
Big thanks to everyone who has sent something into the show so far. I will make sure to maintain a stock of post cards, so you are not under the gun to send one out within a certain time period.

I miss renting games. I'm 25, so I experienced it for quite a while. In foster care, they'd always take me out to rent games for my GBC, PS1, and all that. They'd lay down a few bucks, and I'd have a weekend with a game, and most times (being a nerd with no friends), that was enough. The only time I ever needed to double rent, was for Lunar Silver Star Story PS1 version :p Nothing quite like being 10 years old, running down the aisle to see what's there, what's new, etc.
Shame we lost that magic of going to the video store and browsing around. And then be genuinely excited to go home and play the game or watch the movie. Clicking on a movie on Netflix doesn't even come close to the same experience, because there's zero investment on your part.
I'm 30 and I do miss the days when my father would take my brother and I to rent NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, OG XBOX Dreamcast and Nintendo 64 games between 1992-2004. I guess my game collecting was rooted in these outings at Blockbuster, Video Views (Independent Video Game store in New Bern, NC - which has closed since 1996-97, after it changed to "Smash!" and shortly after - North American Video in the Raleigh, NC area), where my family couldn't afford to get the games, but at least I was able to rent them. Then, we'd get Chinese food or Pizza. These made great family bonding nights.
Best series on RUclips
family got a PC in 96, so I remember several times going and renting PC games like myst, phantasmagoria, rise of the triad, etc. and also renting Sega cd games from blockbuster in 95, like tomcat alley!! :)
Gotta say man, your stories are spot on with some of my favorite memories as a kid. I told you I recently received my original genesis from my mom after living 30 years in a box! Hahaaa it even has the Go-video sticker I slapped on there (local video game rental store long since closed) my buddy and I would rent a game and have a sleepover, eat pizza and play games through Sunday.... Of course soccer or baseball practice Saturday morning and have game night to look forward to... Weekend rental! Perfect description...this is my favorite channel..thanks! Cheers
WoodRatNat yup.
So I get up every morning at 330 and have about a 45 min ride into work and you absolutely make my commute when one of these long vids pops up here or in the main channel. Great job as always and I'm looking forward to sending you another postcard from NJ.
The closest rental place to me is family video, which is maybe 30 minutes away. When I was a kid back in 1988, there were like 15 different places within 30 minutes of me. A few chains like blockbuster and Hollywood, but mostly local or mom and pop places. My favorite was this appliance store called Eric Martin’s. They rented games and movies and sold you anything you would need to use them. The cool thing was they had a Neo Geo hooked up to a giant projection tv and encouraged kids to play it. Great great times.
Don't be embarrassed by telling seemingly unimportant stories....because you are a great story-teller!
You remember names, titles, places.....stuff I don't have room to remember.....but I love the passion of our childhoods that are much different now.
Hot dog! Casper's was our staple in the bay area. Top Dog nailed it decades ago now up in Berkeley. San Leandro was sausage Mecca😎 A lot of great local butchers in the east bay when I was a kid. Not to mention some incredible local breweries. What's off to Jon Paxman!
Your tales are like gold, Chris. The longer the better, as far as i am concerned. Those days back then were great. I used to get picked up by my friend and his mum and spend the whole weekend at his playing video games and watching VHS films whilst drinking gallons of coke and eating pizza.
I was lucky because my oldest brother's friend worked at a video store when I was a kid and he would set aside a free rental for us almost every weekend so we didn't have to rush there Friday evening to get something good. Then later when the store had to get rid of all the NES games to make room for more Genesis and SNES games he gave me a box of ~30 NES games instead of throwing them in the garbage like he was told to.
Wow, why wouldn't they sell them instead of throwing them away?
Probably because it was a small store without a lot of space. You have to remember this was the early 90s and NES games weren't worth anything at the time.
I use to rent games back in the day to see if I wanted to purchase them with my allowance money. It was a great way to give them a test drive before the days of RUclips which I use now liberally. Man I miss those days!
Our household was strictly Betamax until spring of 1992. The last thing I have that was recorded to beta that we still have was the 92 Daytona 500. Dad finally got a VHS that march. I have a few beta vcrs, and a betamovie camcorder I use. Love the format. :)
My Grandmother had given me Marble Madness for Christmas one year, I was not very good at it, haha. I loved the music though. I was so happy to see another Flashback vid pop up, they always take me back to my childhood. Great vid!!
Hey Everyone, This memory has stayed with me to this day. And I thought this was the best place to share.
I went to the rental store with my cousin to rent Mortal Kombat on Sega Master system. We get there and it was hired out. So we were bummed out and got boxing I think it was "Final Blow".
We get back to my cousins house and his Mum had hired Mortal Kombat for us. We were blown away. The game was horrible but my Aunty just knew Mortal Kombat was cool.
I keep re-watching these. I can relate so much. Love the series!
I remember when stores started renting NES games. You are right to get there early, or you would get slim pickings or nothing at all. When you mentioned post cards I didn’t realize you were nearby. I’m stationed at Travis.
Sorry to comment so late, but you bringing up grocery stores offering rental movies reminded me back when I was a kid I'll go with my dad to Raley's or Bel-Air in Sac area and I would sometimes be able to get a movie while my dad was buying a lottery ticket
You are spot on. If you didn't get to the video store early, all of the good games were gone. But, in a way, it helped find some cool games that weren't so popular such as T&C surf design or Double Dribble or maybe Rad Racer. We had two video stores in the 80's when I was growing up. We rented a lot of games. I was actually sad when they closed. Oh well, those were good times!! Great video!
Honestly, every time I watch these videos, I just feel like you are so genuine and kind, and feel like the world still has great people in it! Thanks for all the great content! Made it to my first live stream this past Tuesday! Was great! Catch ya at the next one!
Yup
Me and my g/f make chicken littles. I thought we were the only ones to remember.
Lifeforce is so awesome. First shmup I ever played. Sound track gets me pumped.
Them was good days. Back in the 90's for me.
I used to love renting video games (and movies) back in the day! It gave me a chance to try out many games I normally wouldn't have given the time of day if I had to buy it before I could try it.
I also have fond memories of mom & pop variety stores having a small game rental section and it would always be fun for me to go "hunting" throughout all the places big and small to see what I could find, and of course hope it was in stock.
Great video and keep up the magnificent work!
You and I had similar childhoods: weekend rentals, rented a boy and his blob, had no idea what to do. It's a good game, but it wasn't for me at the time. I enjoy the videos and hope you keep it up!
I grew up 2 minutes from raymond NH, always cool to hear something so familiar on a show like this :)
I enjoyed this immensely! Man the nostalgia is crazy I forgot all about grocery stores doing rentals. Good stuff man thank you
Thanks for sharing those experiences! Very similar to mine when renting games on the weekends. I am 35 right now, and grew up with what was called a Movie Exchange close by to our house as a kid in the 80s into the 90s. Every Friday night after my father would get home from work, we'd go to the video store and then over to Pizza Hut to pick up pizza. Just to get a game on Friday night was a big deal to me as well! Of course we never got there until almost 6:00/6:30 every night, and that meant it was slim pickings but it didn't matter. The chance to rent a game on your Nintendo was a big deal. Of course, because of the "violence" thing I wasn't allowed to rent games where anyone was depicted with guns or blatant violence on the front for a while. So games like Metal Gear, and Rush n Attack, and yes even Contra were off limits. However, as time went on they sort of relaxed their views as long as I could convince them you were killing aliens or robots then it was ok. Double Dragon ended up being a rental I could get every now and then since I convinced them you weren't killing anyone, but just trying to fight your way through some bad guys. I didn't own very many games, but I managed to play a variety of them because of renting stuff once a week or going over to a friend's house that did have some games. Whenever I had a friend spend the night that meant two games to rent which was HUGE! I think they were something like $3 a rental. But I'd end up getting a lot of sports games like Bases Loaded or Tecmo Bowl. I actually didn't own any Mario games for a while so I'd have to rent them when they were in stock every blue moon. Super Mario Bros 2 ended up being a favorite of mine. Never owned it though.
I really like this series. It just brings back some great memories and it's crazy how someone way across the country can have such similar experiences as someone living in the mid-west. Very cool being a kid in the 80s and 90s!
Dude Chicken littles from KFC were the shit! I distinctly remember watching the Max Headroom while chowing down on some back in the 80s.
With Marble Madness , it was one of those rare times where quite opposite the usual, the home ports preceding my experience with the title at the arcade. I think it had a grid style control board, half blue, half red, with a trackball . Whew! Those trackballs were quite unique and very fun to play.
Jonathan sounds like a good friend, glad you got to experience that, life is short, be good!
I wish I would have known about the postcards earlier! Sweet video as always. This is one of my favorite channels. I appreciate your time and thought making my entertainment. Thanks.
Update: mailed my postcard!
Kroger around my area here in Ohio had video rentals till the early 2000's.
My town was also loaded with video game/movie rental shops, till Hollywood Video decided to open up right across the street from Blockbuster. That really put a dent in the mom & pop stores. My only system at the time was PS1, my cousin had taken back his two donated NES's despite me having a decent selection of titles. So when the stores folded, I regrettably did not pick up any vintage games. I was more into obscure VHS horror.
When we moved into our current house it came with 70's woodgrain TV console among other leftovers. It served as my first dedicated gaming center. I bought Medal Of Honor and I stupidly confused the bad picture for being the games fault. Returned first copy for another then later figured out how to tune the picture so it looked better. My cousins ended up getting the television after theirs "broke", then they claimed it got fried in a thunder storm...
I know I say this most of the time, but wow...what a trip through memory lane. A few little things before I forget. KFC still sells Chicken Littles, so you can re-live that childhood memory anytime you wish. It will be more than a buck, but its good for a quick bite to eat. I am glad the box is getting use and seeing some of the other art people have sent in via their post-cards. You talked about the need to get to a rental store by a certain time. I am not sure I was as aware of the Friday rush as you were; but I normally got to the store around 5PM if I did go. Yet one thing I do remember was memorizing the games various rental places had as a kid. I am not sure if this was a thing in California, but even gas stations rented games and videos as did grocery stores. I remember going to the local grocery store and paging through their book where they had a black and white copy of the box to pick what games they had; where each game had a # assigned to it. So you'd tell them the number and they'd look to see if it was in or not. I think most of the time they were $2-$3 for the weekend as you said. The games I remember renting were Mega Man, Faxanadu, PaperBoy, John Elway's Quarterback, Nintendo Pro Wrestling and Tecmo World Wrestling, Excitebike, Robocop, Rampage and the Last Starfighter. My parents always insisted my brother and I rent the game 2-3 times before we decided to buy any games because they didn't want us unhappy with the titles we bought. I kept a code book; and if the games had codes I'd rent the game the next weekend and pick up where I left off. Game rentals were also a big part of friends sleeping over as a few games kept us entertained for hours. I remember renting Marble Madness a few times and I'd agree it was ideal as a rental but it wasn't enthralling enough to want to buy it. I loved watching you play the Boy and his Blob. I picked that up probably about 2 years ago at nearby game store and thought the game was fun, but certainly quirky. The fact the character sort of runs on his own and doesn't always stop on a dime is more than a little frustrating at times and the learn by trial and error is also pretty annoying. The blind falls are kind of messed up but its certainly a unique title, even among NES games. Jonathan's family sounds like they were pretty nice, welcoming people and I'm glad you had people like that in your youthful days. Playing NES was always more fun with friends; especially if you could co-op some games. Sweet video Chris! Loved every second of it!
I have fond memories of bringing my NES with me when I visited my Dad on the weekends. One of the first things we would do is go visit my grandparents, but afterwords we would go to the video store and rent a game and a movie. I discovered some great and awful games (and movies) that way.
Another fun video. I wish my memory was as good as yours. I'm sure I rented games but that's as much as I can recall.
Hi I've been watching your channel off & on for 2 or 3 years I've been watching videos on old magazine issues I'm subscribing. I used to rent Genesis, SNES & NES games a lot in the early to mid 90's. 1 of my favorite things to do was to rent Sonic 3 & Sonic & Knuckles I already had Sonic 2. I also rented games up to The PS2 era.
Love hearing about the good old days
This is my first time seeing A boy and his blob in action. I would have loved this game back in the day.
I'm under the impression that it's one of those games that look/sound better than they actually are.
If you were a kid into puzzle games it was good. I owned it, but it was hard as hell. It took me years to beat it. Remember, back then there was no internet to jump onto and find the solution. It was either buy a strategy guide, find a friend who knew or trial and error.
Yes it actually does look like a neat game that I would enjoy now as an adult, but back as a kid I probably would have hated it.
Good memories. I noticed you have the same Lego System castle I have still from my childhood on your shelf. Amazing
Gonna try to get a postcard for you tonight!
On the subject of renting games: I used to rent a ton of Sega Genesis games back in the day from the local grocery store. Something funny happened this last Christmas. I went to a local pawn shop up home to look at retro games. I ended up seeing a genesis game I rented so long ago in there! It was Jeopardy for the Genesis. I thought that was cool to play it again after all these years.
Watching this video on April 9th, 6 years later at the dmv!
My family went out or ordered food most nights. My dad ran a company and thus had to work 60-70 hours a week and my mother barely cooked so we just did that. We had a hot dog joint we ate at too. They had great sausages you could get with peppers and onions so I usually got that. If you asked you could get multiple mustards too so I tried some good ones there. They had poppyseed buns and I’ve loved those since I first had Mustard’s Last Stand in downtown San Francisco. Anyway, just remembered that. Good food there.
I remember my dad taking me to rent games. When I was really young, we didn't have a Blockbuster account, so I'd rent games from the grocery store. Later on, my dad finally got a Blockbuster card and then we got to rent from there.
I remember one time when my older brother wanted to keep Mortal Kombat for the SNES so he decided to take the sticker off of Super Mario World, put it on the Mortal Kombat cart and vice versa, then return the Super Mario World cart in place of the Mortal Kombat one. He did a pretty good job but I guess because we were taking a lot of time giving the game to my parents to take back, somehow my mom knew it wasn't the correct game and made us basically fess up and give her the real game. Needless to say, we didn't get to rent anything for awhile after that.
Renting games was great. I miss going into Blockbuster and searching out the perfect movies or hoping the new, popular game would be there, or checking the counter to see if anybody turned one in.
As a collector, I actually like games with, "Not for Resale" across the front. It reminds me of where they came from. I also like games that have some kid's name written on it. It makes me wonder who that kid was.
I can certainly relate to some things here. Renting games like that then was unique to the time. I remember the trouble getting certain games. Mega Man 3 was never in stock, it seemed. I finally managed to rent it, which seemed like a miracle. I remember being stuck with Metal Gear with no instructions. It was the worst rental. I don't know if I would have liked the game if I had documentation, but it would have helped some.
Love the postcard idea... I'll have one out to you this week.
Man I remember the first game I ever rented and I didn't even own a NES at that time. I rented Gun.Smoke and took it to my cousins' house. It's definitely a good rental game!
Great stories. My family used to rent videos from the grocery store as well. I'm going to have to get Life force now. Excellent video thanks for sharing.
Awesome! I was just recently wondering when you'd have a new video :-)
Thanks man, I'm always looking out for your content. You've had very similar experiences as I did and I like listening to you... ;)
Another great episode,Thxx!
QSL Card...sounds cool...we say that on the radio in the Fire Dept. to basically say we acknowledge ...like saying 10-4 or Roger that
Damn hit me right in my childhood.
The same exact thing happened to me and my brother with a boy and his blob. We rented it and then had no idea what to do.
I don't think the local video stores in my area started renting Nintendo games until around 1989. I feel like I should remember what my very first game rental was but I'm not sure. It might have been... Karate Kid? Rambo? The selection would often be so bad that I didn't end up getting anything at all.
I don't think my town got a Blockbuster until around 1990. The selection of Nintendo games definitely improved. Highlights for me were Mario 3, Super C, and Snake's Revenge. By 1990 my interest in the NES was fading so I would rent more games than purchase.
i never had the chance to rent a video game. They charged too much for my precarious budget as a child (around 5 bucks for a game/weekend, and a used cartridge at the time would cost around 25, so i just saved the money for a purchase). A 'friend' once found a Blockbuster id, and tried to rent a videogame. He took Super Street Fighters Alpha 2 for the SNES after a couple of tries, and he kept it.
I also loved to watch movies, so we used to rent those for the weekend. The struggle to get a decent movie on friday night was really a thing, if we went there by 9-10pm, we were SOL!
The sunday afternoon was really depressing, you had to return the rental, which meant your weekend was over :(
As usual great vid! The 1st games I can rem renting were Contra, Mega Man & Dr. Choas.
Back in the SNES days Movie Gallery had a 5 games for 5 nights for $5.99 deal. Now those were the days.
They still sell Chicken Little's, but their more oblong (sub-shaped) than the ones you described.
Also, VHF is 2-13, UHF is 14-69.
Another great video. Postcard sent. Thanks.
I had a bad experience with Mandarin Orange Slice on some road trip. I don't remember if it was because I drank too many, had a bad batch, or what. Swore the stuff off. Grape Slice was the shit though!
Great content as usual.
Slice is back baby! Pepsi sold the license and it was brought back in 2018 👍
Mandarin orange, though? I've just been drinking Mandarin Jaritos.
Ahh yes, the divine dichotomy...Mike in Salem, Oregon vs Mike from Portland Oregon. Alas, one could not exist without the other.
Omg I love chicken littles . They actually still make them here in Massachusetts at KFC . Also now I want some hotdogs and cheap beer 🍺 hehe 🍻
"Miniboses back in the day"
During the Marble Madness segment, you are reminded of the wooden maze game. I am remembering "Run Yourself Ragged". Look it up. You're old enough to remember this I'm sure...
Life-force has the same extra life cheat as Contra
25:20 man your games were expensive to rent. Back in the NES days our stores were $1 a day for games. There may have been a price of $1.50 or $1.75 for a new game. But it was great as a kid because it was just a buck plus tax and you had the game for a day and you could keep it for a week with no problem, just pay what you owe at the end. Our store always had the latest games, but of course as you said you had to get there early on Friday and forget Saturday. Nothing good would be in. So what we did was rent the game on Thursday night and then we would have it for Friday and Saturday when your friend was going to be over.
I love Gyruss, you ever play that CGQ?
Also slice soda still around it's just really hard to find
The predecessor to
Streets of Rage and
Jet Set Radio ...
Just look at that wild graffiti
Them chicken littles are also known as sliders.
The games at my local video store sucked. The only ones I can remember renting were Ren & Stimpy: Veediots for the SNES, and After Burner on the Master System. Not the best of choices here either as you can see.
I love your show, I enjoy listening too you, and you will get a post card from me.
Thanks, man! Looking forward to it!
Very nice video.
HAve you played Over Horizon? That was pretty much the only nes shooter I've played and it seemed fun
Do you remember the Dr. Slice they had for a while? That stuff was so amazing!!! Better than Dr. Pepper.
It sounds familiar. Not positive, though. Do they still have Mr. Pibb?
there was also a board game in the 80's called mouse trap! remember that? marble madness reminded me of that nothingbutnostalgia.com/mouse-trap/
My KFC near me still sells the chicken littles.
Dude... Olympia beer? "its the water" you must live in the pacific northwest. I never seen that one outside Washington
They still sell Chicken Littles at KFC in my town. Matter of fact im going to grab a couple right now. 🥴👌🏻
KFC still does Chicken Littles and a limited time offering now and then.
I'll have to try to score some the next time they're on offer. Thanks!
Nice Senna hat
Your new name now is Flashback Chris.
I got A Boy & His Blob as a present from my parents for Easter 1990. I was 5 years old at the time and that was by far my least favorite game of the 8-Bit and 16-Bit generations.
North caldwell is beautiful and for the rich
Hey Dustin! I’m from Nutley
I was from Bloomfield 😁
I’ll send you a postcard but it’s not one from my hometown per se. it’s a Beatles postcard too that my ex-girlfriend got at the Beatles museum in England. Look for it in the next week or so.
I just mailed mine two days ago. Didn't realize it was the same Abbey Road scene, except its the same picture from the album, not an artistic render.
When is the next CGQ+ Flashback!? :)
I don't know yet. I was going to talk about something pretty personal on the next FB episode, and I'm still undecided on whether or not I want to do it.
@@CGQPlus That's understandable. Regardless, thank you for all the great content!
i think ive watched 50 of your videos and i have no idea what your name is
nm, some guy just said in the comments its dustin
My name is Chris. Dustin is the name of one of the guys who sent in a post card.
more like .39c
So basically... a lot of the fans are w***dos . Send post card from where you live , simple as is .
I still don't get why people find a weekend rental funny
we get it you grew up poor.
