    Z is really underrated and imo, he's probably an S-Tier villain for me because he's the physical manifestation of Character vs Self in addition to everything stated here. Z and Moebius as a whole represents the intense desire to be in the now and not to worry about the future, but Z also represents how much our desires can tempt us into making decisions that would leave us for the worst. This is perhaps best highlighted in the first phase of the fight against him as he chained up Ouroboros's powers and capabilities, representing how he's always shackled their lives. And Ouroboros breaks those shackles by standing resolutely against their traumatic pasts and their desires to have those moments that haunted them. Even if the depth of his apparent character is seemingly shallow, Z existed in all of the desires of the characters and the wish for things to be different (hence the comment at the end of the game of acknowledging how there is a little bit of Moebius in all of us). It's such a magnificent detail that went relatively unnoticed by the community that really rounds out Z as a villain

    • @MetaSF_
      @MetaSF_  7 месяцев назад +2

      I honestly don't remember if I said it in the video but although it would've been nice to see Z step out of the theatre to combat Ouroboros like he did in N's time, I like the direction that he's so confident in ability to either persuade them like he did N, or defeat them just to inevitably have to deal with them again later on, especially with the "how many times have you ascended these steps" line. Then going on about why do they stray from taking lives, and that given the time everyone can be a winner. Especially that second part because that's EXACTLY what Shania as feeling and wanted, she wanted to be put into the cycle so at some point she could finally win in life. I don't think Z was weak at all, and I feel people mistake his lack of stepping in as laziness or underutilization, which that's exactly what the devs wanted from him. Z truly doesn't get their defiance and has only ever succeeded. Even making a joke when X called him a broken record, saying it's just part and parcel of his being. He's just a twisted yet chill villain lol, not unbothered

      z is also great as he makes the other villains in 3 like n or shania that much better. he is the motivation that made n do things he did, he is that intense desire to stay in the endless now which n desired most

    • @danknados
      @danknados Месяц назад

      I feel like Z is very unexplained though, and isn't given much backstory or even anything. All we know is that he's the sentient ai of origin that glitched out and began to try to keep the now and not think about the future, with him creating consuls and moebius to enforce that. He's a great character but for me I'd personally put him at high B tier as he's too much in the dark.

    Finally someone who doesn’t write off Z completely. He was a crazy manipulator for N, and posed as a serious challenge for the party. The whole cycle of life, and not being able to change it for that long was crazy.

    • @MetaSF_
      @MetaSF_  8 месяцев назад +4

      FOR REAL, I feel like they miss the entire point of what his aim was. He was very chill, but not for complacency, he was always about the will of the flow and how it would change and differ this time. After so many loops, how can he NOT be confident, Ouroboros has never been able to deter him before

    • @MetaSF_
      @MetaSF_  8 месяцев назад +2

      He really feels like the Darth Sidious to N's Anakin self. Maybe not as good as Sidious but definitely up there. His manipulation on top of confident attitude whether overseeing or in the field was always so engaging to me

    • @G_Knee-S
      @G_Knee-S 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@MetaSF_ My biggest issue is that people seem to compare him to Egil or other good villains, forgetting that unlike them, he's not really a person, but rather a force of human nature. He's a desire that holds you back incarnate, so of course he can't have redeeming qualities, and of course his world holds you back by design. As a desire, he is static by nature; so of course he can't develop as a person or respect another's viewpoint. It also makes perfect sense that he has no particularly complex motivation, as his motivation is obviously no more or less than to fulfill the desire he literally is. A desire by itself is basic, so of course he isn't interesting by himself. The interesting part is people exploring that desire in various ways for various reasons; hence why the depth goes to other characters and his own scenes only ever get interesting because of the characters he's interacting with, like N. He isn't there to be interesting himself, but rather to make others more interesting.
      I think he fits his role as the main antagonist perfectly, since given the truth behind Aionios, having the villain be the desire itself is brilliant and adds more to the finale, because you're not really fighting some grand villain, but rather overcoming the fear and weakness that caused all this in the first place. This is even shown in the final battle as Z's true form shuffles between the main characters' faces.
      Basically, people seem to judge him like a normal character, not bothering to consider how nonsensical giving him the things he supposedly lacks would actually be, unless you changed the story completely. Sure, people are allowed to not like him, but they shouldn't call him a bad villain for not being Egil, because he isn't meant to, and there are multiple ways to making an antagonist. Real thought was given when creating him, however lazy his writing might seem.

      @danknados Месяц назад

      I kinda don't like shania because of the way she views the past oppression she felt in her life. Her decision to rat out the city felt really hollow as she only really was put down by her mother and slightly put down by ghondor, who in reality was just telling her to be herself. Her decision to rat out the city also felt really childish, as she just has a hissy fit and decides to let her entire civilization get destroyed. Also as someone else mentioned, her fall to evil felt too fast, like maybe she was influenced by the moebius into joining but as opposed to N and Joran her fall was a bit quick, like internalized anger from a bad upbringing can make good villains but wanting everything to stay the same for all eternity as you fight to stay alive feels really weird as she grew up in the freedom of the city, but turned against it anyway. If it weren't for M/Mio telling Monica about her deceit, then the city would've been history. But I do agree that her voice actor did really well as I hated hearing her voice.

    Shania for me is kinda meh, yes, her story is gut wrenching, but to me, her tragic and kind of realistic fall does not help that fact that her betrayal just felt so out of left field, and not in a good way like how sudden Dickson’s betrayal was.
    I vastly prefer N’s fall as it was not a quick one, it was made clear it was a long and slow process, Shania’s just felt too out of nowhere to click with me, even after learning her story she just felt like an afterthought of an antagonist for me
    I don’t think she’s bad, she just felt a bit more sloppily handled compared to Joran and N, and that kinda drags her down for me
    I probably would have put her in Low B or High C

    • @MetaSF_
      @MetaSF_  7 месяцев назад

      I get what you're saying, kinda where my suggestion of having her join the group as either a mainstay that eventually gets revealed as a Citizen, or even just how Riku and Manana were before they became Heroes. Give her longer time to be with the group, befriend Sena strongly and also it just by association suffers for the game's decision of making only Mio and Noah's Side Stories mandatory. I get why not all 6's are even if I felt like they get, but it is unfortunate. It felt like the other 4 took plotlines started in the main story but since they didn't want to risk the pacing of the game for all those things, only made Mio and Noah's mandatory and the rest optional. I understand you for sure though, think I had a poll about whether people liked Joran or Shania more cause I was curious about the impact of him being a main story plotline still in the end.

  • @Syrahl696
    @Syrahl696 7 месяцев назад +4

    I never really clicked with Shania as a villain. I think part of it is the way her villain introduction is handled - Ouroboros finally bust out of the prison, only to find N and M waiting to kick their ass... except then they just take a step back to let Shania have her "I just betrayed the f*** out of you" moment. Then you beat her up, and N and M step back in like nothing happened. That honestly really kills the tension of the scene.
    That and the rest of her arc only shows up in Sena's Hero Quest, which is optional, and something I didnt go out of my way to do before beating the game. I honestly feel you could take Shania out of the game entirely and the game would still work.

    • @MetaSF_
      @MetaSF_  7 месяцев назад +3

      I can see that but to me what really made Shania's storyline hit harder for me was how much they endear you to The City and the characters in it. I mean we don't even meet them till chapter 5 aka over halfway through the game and it's like home almost instantly thanks to the history the main cast learns, people like monica and ghondor and then gray who we met outside being reconnected. Then all the great Ascensions through there, so Shania's story and perspective thinking around how the City folk lived and her looking at the lives of Kevesi and Agnians as a chance to win (which really was Z's intention to get the main cast to realize at the end) was something surprising. I do think the rest of her story being tied to Sena's Side Story, like some other parts of the game, kinda are unfortunate so I do get where you're coming from for sure. I just got super invested, that's why I said what I said about her joining the party way sooner

    With Dickson, I really think they could have made his betrayal hit so much harder of he didn't just join the party for Dunban's reintroduction, but up until he does betray the party. I understand that it could have been considered a waste of resources for a fleshed out party member that can't even be used in the whole game but this way, the player could have developed an attachment to him through using him as well as the obvious extra character development that comes with him being a party member. I think his betrayal would feel much less sudden if there were multiple extremely subtle hints to his ulterior motives, rather than the extremely on the nose foreshadowing in Satorl Marsh. They could allow you to use Dickson in new game + to solve the problem of wasted resources.

    • @MetaSF_
      @MetaSF_  Месяц назад

      Hmm, honestly I didnt feel like his betrayal was sudden, to me it definitely felt built up to pretty blatantly like you say too in skme parts but to me, depending on how written can be well done or messed up. In his case, its kinda both because they were making him obviously suspicious, but at the same time in a phase where the angles of suspicion could go in any direction and him being cryptic with potentially untrustworthy like maybe alvis, and then possibly trustworthy like kallian. It would be cool for him to have been a permanent member though that I agree with, theres enough balancing and content to keep him leveled with the rest

  • @redmoon4916
    @redmoon4916 8 месяцев назад +5

    I'm glad to see that you like Alpha too, for me he is a great gray villain, because he wants to solve the problem of the hellish world of Aionios, his goal is create a paradise for the people of the City and free them from the tyranny of Moebius, it's a noble cause. But his methods are immoral, because he wants to erase the people of Keves and Agnus in the process, because they created the Moebius and the horrible world of Aionios, where they kill each other for all eternity, for this reason he only wants to save the people of the City, because they have don't anything wrong and fight for the future. So Alpha is pragmatic to the extreme, he only relies on logic and believes he is doing what is right for the world, also he doesn't want to harm Matthew, who is the protagonist, but rather tries to recruit him until the end. And of course his theme song is a masterpiece and his power is immense. It's amazing to see how many great and diverse villains there are in Xenoblade Chronicles.

    • @MetaSF_
      @MetaSF_  8 месяцев назад +2

      It's really wild how well that Moebius and Alpha clash as concepts through their ideals. One wants to retain the now, refusing to abandon all that has been with them and they've gone through, no matter what pain it has caused in order to face potential future sacrifice, and the other wants to forget all that has been and solely move towards the future. I get both but both are too deep into their side that they try to completely ditch the important roots of the others, making their perspectives volatile and risky to everyone else in the world. I have an upcoming video kinda touching on this too. But yea Future Redeemed was a wonderful way to wrap up this saga especially getting the Alpha the Divine song. Xenoblade does so well with its villains it's fantastic, it gives you so much diversity and perspectives

    Really liked the video, super chill vibes and it felt like you really understood all these characters. I especially liked your appreciation for Amalthus, it feels like people tend to forget him more because the other antagonists in the game tend to have much more "extra" personalities(don't really know how to describe it lol). Amalthus is like my fav villain of 2 because of how beautifully complex he is, and how he manages to parallel people like Rex and Klaus.
    What you said about the main bad typically being somewhat less special than other characters is pretty true, I feel like these characters are meant to kind of close of the message of story, wrapping up everything that previous villains brought to the table, like how Z's motive is amusement just like how that's the reason N tortured Noah.

      I'm glad you liked it, I really try to make these videos comfortable or approach them how I would if I was talking to friends I know that are also into the series, just being real and honest and in-depth where I can. And yea I definitely think Amalthus deserves far more credit, he's a huge reason why on my 2nd time around I came to enjoy Xenoblade 2 much more than my first. Jin and Amalthus being done away first kinda also supports my point about the final boss typically being the less complex character in comparison to the others antagonists, even if they still have depth. Like Zanza, Malos, and Z all are interesting in their own ways to me, with Z imo having some extra complexities I really appreciate particularly, it's still less so than their respective counterparts but that helps the games end on a really smooth note. It's satisfying, while still having met a quota of depth in opposition with others in the games. But yea, Amalthus is amazing in my eyes lol, him and Rex are way more similar than people give him credit, underrated for sure

    Z is a fantastic antagonist and perfectly represents that the villain of 3 is the world itself, which Z is basically the physical manifestation of. I mean Aionios means eternity and Z is the endless now.

    Your comparison of Shania to Azula was something I was also making connections with too. Also, based on Tim Hickson/Hello Future Me’s video on the “Psychology of Azula” and how the loss of a safety parental figure led Azula to rely on her abusive father, where at least Zuko had Iroh. And I give Iroh a lot of credit, but when even he gave up on Azula, it was basically Joever for her mental health.
    But in Xenoblade 3, it delves even more into those themes of nurture vs nature, and how ill nurture can ruin otherwise good nature. Noah even bringing up the difference between him and N was “luck” and “chance encounters”, as it was in Noah’s nature to rebel and save people, but as N, the lack of anyone to tell him otherwise besides Mio (who couldn’t atm) failed him. So the Power of Friendship shonen lesson was more potent.

    • @MetaSF_
      @MetaSF_  2 месяца назад

      I know I do a lot of rpg stuff but as I expand out I got plans for videos outside of games stuff but primarily for things I super want to do and ATLA is one of them. Iroh for sure deserves much credit, he was never flawless but that's what helped him become as great as he was. Plus honestly, I know some try to but I can't really put much blame for Azula on Iroh. In the first place that's not his child so Ozai just needed to actually care about his kid LOL. Difference with Zuko, is he was actually getting sent out into the wilds instead of being safe at their homelands, feeling compelled to go with him makes sense. His father not looking after him so might as well. Big connection Shania with her fathering being the good one, but when he died (similar to Zuko's mom leaving), she was just left with her terrible mother.
      Then to N and M there is although they had each other, when it fell to one (N in this case) to make a decision for them both, it was a huge error in his part. Shania definitely was a bad nurturing scenario for her good nature, N I feel wasn't nurtured badly, but got eaten up by his own guilt in making a deal with the devil and just felt he couldn't go back and face himself no matter what. For Noah, he just as easily could've turned out like N but if he was offered the power of Moebius like N was, would he have taken it? Big chance he would, but like you said his friends helped him and Mio out a lot to defy moebius in a lot of ways. But this game good power of friendship writing so it was hard to really make it seem so out of place. I can say so much more but this comment gonna end up a whole essay LOL

      @MetaSF_ The point with N I interpreted was that Noah still had others to support him if he did lose Mio but still managed to survive, and it does seem Moebius initiatives happen first thing in a new incarnation. However, N only had Mio.

      @@MetaSF_ You summed up perfectly what made Z so great and he's probably in my A tier too. He has one job, does it extremely well, and fully owns the part. I like Dickson for the same reason but would put him in S since we get so many good scenes with him.
      Can't say much good about N personally, though it is personal. In my experience loss has only ever been a good thing and the way he shuts himself off reminds me of too many former friends. With Future Redeemed I can admit how perfectly he was written, but in the end when he was on screen I just didn't know how to feel; there was no sense of "THIS IS THE GUY". Same issue with Egil for me. He does have Shania's "only one who knows what's going on syndrome" in his favor, so maybe a tired leader with no followers is what she would become too.
      Tyrea...looks like I need to rewatch some scenes! By the way, search up "miyabi" to see how they came up with Y!

    I really hate the fact that i like Zanza because i know he's not as deep or complex as the others up there but Id still put him in A tier just cuz i just got a big soft spot for him and X1 in general, it's also funny because in X2 my favorite is Malos and my least favorite is Amalthus, both are still amazing but it's just funny how we got our shit backwards 😂

    • @MetaSF_
      @MetaSF_  8 месяцев назад +1

      LOL, yea that actually is mad funny. Zanza maybe was the part I contemplated the longest in silence so much that I had to cut so much of my chin just in my hand thinking 😂. If there was one set I would change up, it might be swapping Joran and Zanza's positions. And sometimes, we villain doesn't need to have super deep motivations or complexity, they can be well written for their intelligence or cunning or even simply their impact on the story and characters. I be sayin all the time that development isn't the sole factor of a great character

      @@MetaSF_ I feel like Joran was what shania was supposed to be. Shania's backstory is just abuse while Joran's is generational trauma and feelings of uselessness. Joran has a right to become moebius because of the bad hand he was dealt with while shania was dealt a decent hand but just couldn't keep up, and instead of asking for help, she let her hatred build up and when moebius offered her an alternative, she took it, disregarding all the other people in the city that didn't do anything to hurt her. She went full on Chernobyl to try to kill her mother while taking out everyone in the city as a result. She then goes on to badmouth the ouroboros about how hard she's had it while they've had it much harder, as they've had to fight all their past lives while Shania's call to action was only pressure from her mother. I honestly think that shania could've been better but isn't worth S tier. I'd say she's a low B or high C. She isn't anywhere close to the depth of N or Joran, or even egil or possibly even Zanza.

    • @danknados
      @danknados Месяц назад

      I feel like shania is kind of a hollow antagonist for me. It's like there's this employee who is being ridiculed by his boss because he isn't very good at his job and so becomes more resentful because a co-worker of his is doing much better and is unintentionally rubbing it in his face, so he gets recruited by a terrorist organisation to blow up that building and kill all the people that didn't do shit to him in order to kill his boss because of his inferiority complex. If someone told this to you, you would wonder why they decided to blow up the building and not just talk it out or some shit. I get that the city is a very conservative place but 2 people aren't enough to make a person become a genocidal maniac in this case.

    To me, Shania is the worst execution of a character concept they've used a lot. Amalthus, Jin, and N have similar story beats and motivations, but Shania is just weak. She's weak, and when she finally gains power we see what she does with it. Aionios being such an awful place puts her in an even worse light since her story can't even be unique, but she couldn't take the pressure and snapped on innocents. Her main character trait is weakness.

    • @MetaSF_
      @MetaSF_  6 месяцев назад +1

      I disagree about her being the worst execution of the concept, and I do think her story has enough emotional impact to stand apart even if I think there was more approached they could've gone with. I feel like her and N especially share a big trait of being unveiled to be pathetic people with simple desires that gave in to the wrong thing. N wanted to live forever to never lose, and Shania wanted to be able to live again and again to escape losing so she can eventually win. Both really fell for exactly what Z wanted like how at the end he made the comment about with his method "anyone can be a winner, given the time." I do respect your opinion though I know she didn't hit the same for everybody, I just personally see her differently. I know my opinions about Malos and Amalthus are super different from others too LOL
