A Day on the Hillsboro Branch

  • The Hillsboro Branch was once part of the Boston and Maine Railroad's network of lines throughout the state of New Hampshire. Today, though a fraction of its former length, the branch is jointly operated by Pan Am Railways, and the Milford & Bennington Railroad. Pan Am's local NA-1 serves many of the local industries, while the M&B runs "conveyor" trains between the Granite State Concrete aggregate facility in Milford and the quarry in Wilton.
    On Thursday, August 15th, 2019, a friend and I had the opportunity to visit the short line gem of southern New Hampshire. As luck would have it, Thursdays were when both railroads operated over the same trackage, giving us plenty of railroading action. For motive power, the M&B ran its former CN SW900, with the cut of 10 hoppers and caboose. Pan Am sent its former CN GP40-2W, making for an exciting reunion of Canadian power.
    I hope you enjoy this glimpse of branchline railroading in the twenty-first century. If you haven

      The caboose is used because the Milford Bennington Railroad, in order to serve its sole customer, Granite State Concrete, is a PULL-SHOVE operation. There is no runaround track for the engine to be able to run around and, couple on to the other end of its train, either end.

    Does anyone know if progress has been made on the reopening of the Wilton Scenic Railroad since 2018?

    • @rickledges4412
      @rickledges4412 2 года назад

      After the Wilton Scenic owner passed away, the two Budd Cars were sold and moved to Newport RI. While another operator might be found, it would have to be a start from scratch operation. The cost of Diesel fuel is through the roof. Liability insurance would be a major cost, along with buying or leasing equipment.

      @@rickledges4412 Ah, that is a shame. Maybe someday it will reopen, against all odds. I would love to experience it. I just moved to Lyndeborough. The tracks cross my dirt driveway, so my neighbor told me about the train that used to run. I have noticed that someone comes by to clear fallen trees from the tracks, but other than that I have not seen any activity.

    Nice to see the old switcher working. Those are unusual looking hoppers, I have never seen that design before. Strange to see the Pan Am logo on a train. Great video and thanks for sharing. Dave

    With the sale of PAR to CSX, it is unclear if CSX will operate the Wilton to Nashua segment of the line. Time will tell. Watch this space.

    Nice to see you are still uploading Lit Lantern, sorry forgot your name again.😣 How have you been?
    Cool to hear that P5 horn on that switcher and what I believe to be a pure M3 horn on 509. 3015’s horn would sound like that if it was not fouled. That was interesting to see that caboose have horn and bell. Keep it up 👍🏻

    I saw that once before, being painted on the sign of the switch (derail) stand. It reads: DERAIL FINK'S FOOT!

    it is definitely a great piece of trackage. Just ran it on Sunday with the Cotton Valley Rail Trail Club. tracks are quite well maintained up to the last customer, even after most was good running.

    In the late 80's there was talk of servicing the pulp mill in Antrim (or is it Bennington?). What happened?

    The hoppers look like the old Iron ore hoppers that both CNR and ONR used to have.
