I am a pastor and neither a Calvinist nor Arminian and absolutely love and recommend this bible. It reads well and, in my opinion, is an excellent bible for anyone of any Christian faith. Those who seek to dig deeper can, and as you rightly pointed out, it is chock full of research material. I have a plethora of bibles that I use for study and to prepare sermons, whether topical or expositional. But this is my absolute favorite, and if I could only have one bible, this would be it, hands down. In any case, nice review.

This video is an EXCELLENT, intelligent review of the ESV Study Bible. Your overview analysis is one of the best I have watched on RUclips. You are very thorough in your explanations---enlightening without being boring. I would love to sit in on one of your classes, because this video shows what a great teacher you are. I purchased the ESV SB a few weeks ago. (Found a used version with very few markings in it). And became extremely impressed with the articles, which you mentioned, and the numerous charts and maps within this version of the Bible. Thanks for a truly A++++++ review of the ESV Study Bible.

I have the large print leather edition of this study Bible. It's over 3,000 pages, so it is pretty heavy, but it's worth it for the larger print for both the text and the notes. I absolutely love it. I consider this to be the perfect study bible (bar the Calvinistic leaning though), but I can overlook that as the wealth of information here is almost unparalleled. It's done by conservative scholars and I'm grateful for all the hard work they've done with this!

Hi! I'm a new subscriber. I really like and appreciate your reviews of the study bibles I've seen in a couple of your review videos. I commented on another video (top 7 study Bibles) that I really enjoy and appreciate the NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible, but my primary study Bible is the ESV Study Bible. I like it for all the reasons you enumerated. As for its Reformed leanings and its complementarian point of view, I don't find them limiting to my personal view and they don't bother me, and I say this as a woman who loves to study the Word of God (complementarianism is not a trigger for me). But I do understand and accept that there are other believers who hold a different view, and that is fine with me.

Thats what us, new to the Bible people do by the way... we watch lots of reviews :) So i now have my very own copy and could't be happier! It is everything i was hoping it would be and more! For me personally, it is probally better than investing in a Bible commentary? i mean, a lot of this stuff is still over my lil'head :) because the notes are printed kinda small (for me) i sometimes log into the ESV website and read it online. unfortunately, not all the articles are available in their online version.

@@DrGero15 The Catholic Church in the USA uses the “New American Bible” (previously known as the “Confraternity Bible”) as revised. The Catholic Church in Canada uses the NRSV and the Catholic Church in England and Wales uses the RSV (second edition 1971/72) and is soon to replace this with the ESV. In 1943 Pope Pius XII laid down guidelines for Biblical scholarship, which involved a direct translation from the best of the original sources into the modern language. These required the Douay-Rheims and the Knox translations to be set aside, as they were translations from the Latin Vulgate and, being translations from a translation, did not comply with the new norms of Biblical Scholarship. As a result, two translations were approved - the Jerusalem Bible (1966 edn.) was approved for use in the Liturgy and for private and public devotional use and the RSV was approved for teaching and study purposes. It would have been possible, of course, to adopt the New American Bible, by preparing an Anglicised version of this for use in England and Wales, however, as the Church of England and most Protestant Churches were using the Authorised Version in one or other of its revisions, a decision was made to simply adopt the Authorised Version, as being a reliable, direct translation from the original languages, thereby complying with the norms of translation set by Pope Pius XII.

At 10:18-11:06, when you were talking about Revelation 3:16 about how Christ is talking to the Laodiceans being similar to the water they received either warm or cold.
Doesn't the Laodiceans' lukewarm religious lifestyle pertain to the modern followers of Christ today? Wasn't that the takeaway message that we cannot be lukewarm ourselves? Similarly, when Paul wrote solely to the Corinth church in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, wasn't the message NOT to live a sinful lifestyle or else you will not inherit kingdom of God? I always believed that those verses were meant for us too. In your video you made it seem like it was ONLY directed towards the Ladocean churches, which I understand given that the message was originally for them. However, what other meaning could possibly be attributed to that verse (Revelation 3:16)?
Forgive me for all the questions. I always thought that the message for Revelation 3:16 was for us too, despite being directed towards the Laodiceans.
God bless and good video review!

    • @DiscipleDojo
      @DiscipleDojo 2 года назад +3

It is indeed for us too. But "lukewarm" vs. "hot" & "cold" has a very specific meaning that knowing the background at Laodica helps us better understand. See the final video in our "Bible for the Rest of Us" playlist for a discussion of that passage in detail.

The Authorised Version is widely accepted across the whole of the Christian Church, in one or other of its revisions. The Eastern Orthodox Churches in English speaking countries tend to prefer the New King James Version. The Catholic Church in Canada, England and Wales, India and other English speaking countries, tends to prefer the RSV, the NRSV or the ESV. The Church of England uses the NRSV. Most Protestant Churches accept the Authorised Version in one of its revisions. The New King James Version is very popular with Pentecostal Churches, for example. There is really no need to stray from the Authorised Version if you wish to find a safe and reliable translation. Of course, as a Catholic, I need not concern myself with whether a translation, or the associated study notes, is “Calvinist” or “Arminian”. The Council of Trent did not consider it necessary to enter into this particular debate. It found, as a trend, that many of the Protestant Reformers strayed into one or other forms of the Pelagian heresy, by which they did not stress, sufficiently, the doctrine of sanctifying grace.

Hi David, There are no Arminian bibles; there are only bibles. The Arminian view of salvation must be eisegetically derived, same with female pastors. Different types of Grace - man made. Free will - one verse in the ESV and one in the NASB, four in the NKJV. God’s sovereign election/choice - more than 100 verses in all translations. Zero female pastors, elders, bishops, or overseers. One female deaconess. Both of these conclusions are man’s desires and man-centered vice God’s decrees and God glorifying. Next thing you know, homosexuality will fully accepted within main line churches and explained off as being “made in God’s image” vice a personal choice … oh wait. The vast majority of people will not accept the Bible as written. They believe in themselves and worldly teachings.

If you find it, before you touch it, you must recite THESE THREE WORDS!!
VERY IMPORTANT!!! DO NOT FORGET THESE, OR ATTEMPT TO SUBSTITUTE OTHER WORDS!! (I'm looking at YOU, Ash!!)
    *KLAATU*
    *VERATA*
    *NICTO*

That's because the egalitarian view has very weak scriptural support to it. Over and over again egalitarians overstate, stretch, or flat out misrepresent most of the points they try to make in Scripture. Mike Winger has a very thorough video on their claims.

I like Mike. But I believe he is wrong on this topic. See the discussion Carmen Imes and I had here on the channel for why I say that.

Oh that thing is a miracle alright. And it is one of the better of the 200 Apostate Bibles. This one only has 64,000 differences from the King James. But I have questions ;) The more expensive versions of the ESV have the celtic cross stamped into the cover. Why would a bible have the Nazi Iron Cross, you know the one on German WW2 Planes, and the same one the SS wore on their uniforms stamped into the leather front??? Are you going full pagan? I guess the ESV is not quite as bad as the New King James. They got an entwined trifecta printed on that puppy ;) If you google that it is 3 entwined sixes. So at least the ESV doesn't have 666 stamped on the cover ;) That is probably a plus LOL! So tell me preacher man which Jesuit text do you prefer, The one they found in the Vatican basement, the one they found in a Monestary in the trash bin, or the combination of the two that the athiests Wescott and Hort wrote they call the "Critical Text"????? Every one of these things is a ticket to hell for somebody. So you go ahead and I'll wait here ;)

@@DiscipleDojo LMAO! You didn't explain the Celtic Cross on the ESV or the 666 stamped on the New King James. That is very real! The 64000 differences are very real. The garbage Jesiut base of the Critical Text is very real as well. You full well know the warning in Revelation 22. You real sure you want to meet Saint Pete with that thing in your hand? And your gonna get to explain the others you led down that path. Even the math is against you. 6 billion King James that created 2 billion protestants. The NIV is the closest at about 2 million copies. So Satan's best try came in at .0003%. You got a ways to go with that little Vatican counterfit ;) And I am foolish? ROTFLMAO! If you try real hard, why soon you can be Baptising Aliens and blessing Homosexuals right there by the Pope ;) And the "Oy Vey", now there's a thought. Why you can convert to Judism. They long ago abandoned the Torah in preference to the babblings of the Phasisees in the Talmud. Come to think of it, you and this ESV are mirroring their nonsense pretty close LOL!
