    Saint Peter's church, gothic, Louvain, Belgium
    Raytracing experiment - Preliminary test version (that means: working on a better one) - animation created in Persistence of Vision Raytracer (POV-Ray)
    The towers of this Brabantine gothic church (Brabantse gotiek) were designed around 1505 (on parchment, 4 metres high, on display in the municipal museum), by Joost Matsys, brother of the famous painter Quentin Matsys (Dutch: Quinten or Kwinten, Massijs or Metsijs or Massys or Metsys). between 1524 and 1530 he made a detailed stone model (8 metres high - on display in the church itself), which was the main input for the development of this computer model.
    The towers were never fully executed, even though they were higher in the past. Construction stopped mid-16th century. Between 1570 and 1604, the southern tower collapsed gradually. After several restoration campaigns throughout the 17th, 19th and 20th century, the tower obtained its current form (as it can be seen at the beginning of the video).
    Music: 'kyrie' by Andrea Gabrieli, on the magnificent recording 'A Venetian Coronation 1595', performed by the Gabrieli Consort and Players, under the direction of Paul McCreesh. A must-buy!
    (ok, that's not 16th century Flemish music, but this piece matched excellently with the animation :o))

    Is er een website waar je dit model kan bekijken? Prachtige animatie!

    The only way the three towers could be built in the future is by disassembling the bottom parts of the towers that are already built and by using a deep foundation (pile foundation) to battle the unstable soil. After that the towers can be built. The only problem is money, though... ;)

    Lovely animation! I study in Leuven and I've always found it a real pity they never finished the towers. If I ever have enough funds to pay for their construction, I will definitely do so ;) I was wondering about the music though: I can't seem to find this specific part of the 'kyrie' when I search the recording online (like on iTunes, Spotify etc.). What is the exact title? Thanks in advance!

      If you have that amount of money, please tell me in advance :D Ok serious now, the Kyrie comes from a recording 'A Venetian Coronation 1595', with music by Gabrieli, from the Gabrieli Consort and Players. And the exact title is 'Kyrie'. Sorry, don't know more :)

      @mandgsurvival 8 лет назад

      Haha I will ;) I've found the complete recording online with the separate tracks (on several locations) but there is only a 'kyrie à 5' and a 'kyrie à 12' though none of them is the exact kyrie that's used in this video, unfortunately. But thanks for the help, will keep looking! At least this video has the recording in it :)

      oh, but it is the 'Kyrie a 12', the 10th track on the album.

      Oh great, thank you! Must have not heard it properly then, I thought it was in a different key for some reason ;) thanks again!

    Maybe they could make those towers in another material than stones , all is kinda possible nowadays and in the futrure i'm pretty sure something could be made. Nice video !
    The same happen with the hospital Sint Pieters Kliniek an unstable fundation is why that hospital is empty , because the underground of Leuven/Louvain is a maze of the Dijle river .

    • @LJBSasha
      @LJBSasha 8 лет назад +1

      Are you saying in other words that the Dijle River has underground channels running through the bedrock (and so many of them as to form a maze)? If so, how deep beneath the surface do those channels run, and impacting how much of the area upon which the city stands?
      It would be a question of - in other words - drilling through the bad rock until a more stable part be reached. Once that good stratum is reached - and one has appropriate piles of masonry plus other materials sunk through the waterlogged layer to the dry part further below - THEN it would become possible to properly build upon that stretch and finally not only save those two buildings (and any others that are endangered by that unstable stratum) but to at long last complete them.

    Fantastic. What did you use to model it? Just plain Povray CSG? Or did you use some kind of CAD program?

    • @yvesvanhellemont430

      +Will Ryan , nope, pure Povray CSG. It took a while, but the result is quite satisfying ;)

    FANTASTIC!!!! Ah, how sad that both the funds were lacking - and that the ground beneath this beautiful church was so unstable!!! [If I understand correctly, it was not the surface of the earth that made things collapse but the bedrock beneath.]
    Great Flamboyant-Gothic (my favourite architectural style) church in all events even as it stands (the interior is resoundingly beautiful); however, having that trinity of openwork-spired towers plus the west-façade would have made it into an absolute masterpiece!!!
    Also, FANTASTIC simulation: one at times could have thought it more than realistic! Most definitely enjoyable as well as edifying - including the soundtrack choice. Even if it's not Flemish (e.g., Lassus), it's amply compatible in terms of the period AND of the mood as one makes tour after tour around what would have been a crowning jewel. My only suggestion is that it could move a little slower so that one can luxuriate yet more in the prodigious detail. BRAVISSIMO, Mr. Vanhellemont!!!!

    Doodjammer dat dat niet is afgeraakt... Prachtig om te zien! En ook die tweede toren in Antwerpen had een groot verschil kunnen maken. Ik denk dat ze dat nu niet meer kunnen, en wellicht is dat ook compleet onbetaalbaar nu

      Bien plus haut. Elle aurait du atteindre 170 metres. Une des nombreuses tours concues pour etre la plus haute au monde. Et meme maintenant, si on pouvait l'achever avant 2026, elle serait la plus haute tour d'eglise au monde.

    De reden waarom het niet afgemaakt werd is omdat de ondergrond er niet voorzien is. Het ding zou instorten, anders had het er gestaan.

      It would probably be the most beautiful aswell as i think Tallest church in the world and Leuven would be one of the Most well known cities for its Outstanding landmark. It is already for the Magnificent town hall but this would top it a hundred times.
