he's been going back and forth on how to handle his forehand. during the clay season this year, he was trying to play really spinny with his forehand and ended up loosing all his firepower for not much gain. now he's back to hitting flatter but of course that's leading to him spraying errors all the time. he's definitely trying different things, but nothing has yet revealed itself to be the answer.
Fritz aside, many American players are over-ranked because they gain a lot of points playing on US turf, especially Shelton and Tiafoe. They do not play that well outside of the US. So many of the ATP 500-1000 tournaments are held in the US and these guys gained wild card entry when they were lower ranked. So the inconsistency did not affect them as much as players like Shang.
Agreed. His mental attitude needs work too but this should be a humbling experience. At one time I thought he could be the next US men GS winner but that seems to be too far a reach at this point.

nah, he is just overhyped by the media because he was facing novak. he may be in the semi finals, but only because his half of the tree was really weak. the organisers placed all the other top players like sinner, alcaraz, medvedev, etc, on the other side of the tree, so that novak can get the easiest path to the finals. just like this year's wimbledon

Serve placrment is rather poor, he works with speed and spin mostly. About the volleys, i think it's poor ball recognition and less than stellar footwork, he's moving a little bit like an elephant in a China shop.
Ace rate is irrelevant. Just for show. Ben is 8th in the ATP serve rankings - way above his general ranking. So his serve is definitely a useful weapon and you're wrong about it.
Nichi and Shang are just a lot better than their opponents. Shang is what Shelton should be. Ben will be fine, but this is the type of tourney he should be racking up points at. American 250 stop is tailor made for him.
I hope Opelka read this very helpful comment for covering both sides of the tennis court by practicing *fencing or dancing style lunge that should cover both sides of the court balls coming back to him that he can at least short chop or short spin over the net!
