We did this to create an airier sound that suited this song perfectly, though it was really hard to play like that without the sound cracking! :) As you said, all about the nuance!

koobyjavi great question! I do it for both cello solo sections. I wanted a more folky, airy tone. Holding the bow further up the stick makes the bow length shorter. This way I can use the entire bow with shorter/quicker motions that have the sound that I’m looking for.
