If you wanted to know, that "Jenkin's Wholesale" area used to be the local tannery, the smokestack was built around 1897 (I've also read 1840 but there's barely any information so I'll just say around that timeframe), and was owned by C. C. Smoot and Sons Co. up until around 1916, when there was a major flood that devastated the local area. The property was then sold to International Shoe Company sometime after the fact (I think around the 1920s), and was in use until 1940, when another major flood happened and basically sealed it's fate for good. After the flood, they sold the land at auction (around 34 acres), including all the machinery and equipment, even the 100,000 gallon water tower. Jenkin's Wholesale was a really successful business in North Wilkesboro at the time (I think it was a sort of side-gig, since the main man, C. E. Jenkins, ran a company called Jenkins Hardware), and they converted the land into an auction space for various goods until sometime in the 1950s, where the land was just left there
Is like a ghost town, I used to live there a long time ago, it brings me sad memories, it was hell to live there. mother die on a car accident. Most people work at Tyson processing plant. there is no life there, it never was. it was almost 29 years ago, it is full of crime and drugs.
Now I know why the locals down there are with me in wanting to put North Wilkesboro back on the NASCAR CUP circuit, yikes their local economy could use the sudden boost of outside revenue!
@@AcknowledgeMe29 sorry for hear that ,but Wilkesboro is very old and modern town they have wonderful geography and people, compare with Miami is a paradise.
As a native of North Wilkesboro, NC don't move there! It has the largest assault and murder cases in the state. I left the state to go north, 16 years ago, best decision I ever made! I know the road you are going on very well, it's the heart of the town.
the6thdimention877 could you please tell me where you sourced this information from? I have family that just moved there and it concerns me to read this.
@@1mama402 I'm so sorry I'm really not trying to make you a nervous wreak knowing you have family that moved there. I'm very quick to trash my hometown of North Wilkesboro because it's way too conversative to my taste but you should draw to your own conclusions I saw the stats of assault and murder cases on various realtor sites when I was looking up my childhood home that got abandoned on old Statesville road. The sites that tells you all of the information is the official site of North Wilkesboro and other sites www.niche.com and look up Wilkes County North Wilkesboro NC on www. USA.com I hope this helps
Thank you so much, I will look into these sites. I realize bad stuff happens everywhere but some places are much worse than others. Hoping my family did proper research before choosing to relocate, especially because they are all elderly.
