Love OP!! Prestwick is the mutts nuts!! I was very fortunate back in the day to play for University of Glasgow and we had an annual match against Old Prestwick members. We'd go down and play four balls in the morning and usually win comfortably, then we'd change into our jacket and ties, have an incredible lunch in the fantastic clubhouse, and so much booze...so much. Then we'd stagger out in the afternoon and get absolutely destroyed! Never seen so many horrific tee shots from good players on #1 hahaha Great memories, thanks OP!!
Golf is perceived as a ‘premium’ activity. You have to put on a special outfit, smart shoes. A day out playing golf just ‘feels’ like a premium activity for a lot of people. Using Ben Ross irons, or budget gear/clothing feels like walking into the four seasons wearing jeans and your Clarks school shoes. People want to go into the course and feel special, feel premium. I think that’s why brands like Ben Ross are often overlooked by the casual golfer or mid handicapper (which would be these brands target audience).
I don't agree with this at all. To me at the moment there are 3 tiers of golf clubs...those that are pay as you play, where all types of clubs are welcome and any type of player. Then the ones where membership is open to all, these you have to look the part, but don't need premium equipment to be a member...then there are the clubs where you have to be invited to be a member or buy your way in, these you need premium everything... I have played at all three types and my £500 set was probably the best for my ability and I score on average 35 Stableford points....clubs do not make a difference in play just in perceived stature.

Ben Ross are my go to brand. I can buy relatively cheap and if I don't get on with I can move them on for roughly the same price (I buy in the second hand market). I also like Wilson for the same reason. Both brands are also bloody good.
I just wanted to say this, I am about to turn 30 in a month and I just picked up playing golf. I absolutely fell in love with it not to mention I have a good teacher. My step dad use to teach lessons and was a golf shop pro for four seasons hotels. I find so much inspiration listening to your podcast and watching the good good channel. I know you’re never too old to start playing golf just wish I started earlier but between your channel and theirs I find so much inspiration to keep striving to be better. Maybe one day I’ll win a little tournament and be content. Learning on a set of ping I3 0-size.
I guess I am a brand snob as well. I love my Titleist golf clubs but have tried other brands especially in wedges and woods. I even had Kirkland wedges and loved them after I re gripped them. The thought of buying less expensive premium brands have crossed my mind. The main reason I don’t is because I can’t re sell them in case I don’t like them or want to upgrade later i know I can resell the big name brands for a decent amount even if they are a few years old.
I changed my driver and 5 wood at the start of the year. Went to an American Golf range as an initial dip in the ocean, was initially handed a set of MacGregors to try - loved the 5 wood, hit it pure 200 yards every time bolt straight, couldn't get on with the driver - the head seemed to be set at a weird angle. Tried Calloway and Cobras and didn't really like either of them. Went to a different range at a local club and got fitted for Ping G425s at their fitting centre which I love. Would have been happy to go with the MacGregors had I been able to hit the driver as well as the 5 wood, but certainly wasn't in the initial thought process for new clubs. Marketing is a big thing with the bigger brands over the smaller brands - you never see MacGregor or RAM being advertised so they're not in the general golfing subconscious as much as the bigger brands.
My son an avid golfer in grade seven 20 years ago for a science project drilled a hole in his brass putter and put a laser pen that projected a line for alignment when putting.
Great episode guys!!! Brand snobbery is prevelant is our consumerism society. With that said I would play a set of older name brands before a set of newer lesser know brands. 🤪
Thanks for answering my question. As you said, it can be used for a lost ball. As for position of relief, check the rule (8E.5) you can in fact drop it on the fairway! Relief area reference points are A were the ball is believed to have been 'lost' and B the point on the fairway no close to the hole. From there it's two club lengths, so part of the fairway comes into the relief area. We have certainly started to use it on our friendly matches as it keeps the round going.
It was going to be introduced in the last rules changes but was removed and became a local rule. I guess the issue being that where do you prove the ball went out of bounds. Not sure if many courses adopted the rule.
I went on Golf Avenue in Canada and I am now using Callaway Big Bertha Driver 2008 Callaway Fusion for Woods and Heavenwood hybrids and it has changed my game. I'm out driving members with Callaway Epic and Taylormade R11.
I tell you want aggravated me this weekend was temporary greens in the middle of the fairway, it happens every fall at my local club, but it's the location that gets me. It's always in the perfect drive position and it's roped off and you can't hit off them so you must move your ball to a lesser position
I’ve had a set of Ben Ross for about 7 years and they’re still going strong. I bought them off a Pro who played off +3 and used to love rocking up to tournaments and be written off because of his equipment and then winning. I bought the Driver, 3wood, 5wood, irons SW-6iron was half the price of my previous set of Calloway X18 irons and I’ve used them for longer than the Calloways! The Driver broke about 18 months ago when I kept hitting the ball off the top of the face so now have a Taylor Made SIM2 but apart from this the Ben Ross clubs are great and I would definitely buy these new ones.
Every Tuesday I’m waiting for the podcast to be released, after dinner I relaxed on my sofa and watch the RUclips version. Friday night is about Break 75…., when no videos are released on Friday’s it feels odd must confess. 😂
Don't sweat using a tee peg or a pitch repair tool to mark your ball. Unless it is in someone else's line really isn't an issue. I have used all 3 in the past and sometimes comes down to whatever I can pull out of my pocket first.
I remember getting golf gloves that had ball makers on them with the "little knob" on them. The glove had to have one or I didn't buy them. Now can't find them.
Frasers Group sold Dunlop to Sumitomo Rubber Industries several years back. Sumitomo also own Srixon and Cleveland! FG retained Slazenger but Dunlop are now the distributor for all Slazenger product (as well as being the manufacturer for much of it too).
One really annoying habit, especially with younger low single digits to me is, When people let’s the flagstick fall after picking it off the hole onto the puttig surface in manner, where the bottom end is on the ground. Some sticks are actually quite heavy and generate speed by the leverage by th length and weight they present. When fallin the pole makes half-pipe type rails on the soft greens especially and nobody have ever been seen repair the rails done by the stick. Putting across such a hollow straight line, the ball is to follow the ”tube” instead of reading the line as it is.
Great point about recreational golfers playing illegal clubs. I would actually love to see them out on the course. Golf is a hard game, and having a crazy jumbo driver that would allow the recreational player to pop one out there as far as a scratch golfer would be great. Probably pick up pace of play for the entire course. I'm all for it.
It is a local rule example and suggestion in Randa’s publications. And you may drop on the fairway, two clubs off the first cut, but not closer the hole than where the original ball went OB or got lost. At St Andrews Links Castle course it is implied with only one shot penalty as local rule to speed up the game. You may drop in first cut near the spot, where you lost your ball into the fescue.
Guy I'm not sure on your comment about pricing of "premium forged irons" being just $699 back in say 2014. I specifically remember even with PUD at a golf shop I'd be looking at almost $100 per club for just basic shaft/grip on it.
I went to buy some new irons. I had Ping i500 for 5 years and wanted something new. I hit no less than 13 irons over a 2 day fitting. I walked away with Wilson Staff D7 forged with KBS light stiff shafts. They bought my old irons and regripped the new ones in my spec. I walked out the door 4-PW including tax for $533 USD. Couldn't be happier. Handicap has dropped 4 points.
I play 11 holes a lot, because I have not enough time or energy for 18. The 11th green at my club also happens to be next to the parking lot! 11 is the perfect amount of holes for me.
I use a tee to mark my ball on the rare occasion that I actually pick it up, however it's because I have one in the end of my putter grip so I have something to repair pitch marks.
when Texas scrambling I use either a poker chip or divot tool to mark our spot on the green. One guy I get teamed up with hates it though but won't tell me why
2 years ago I went for a custom fitting with the intention to buy a set of new irons. I went in really liking a set of Cobra irons, but they weren't right for me. I ended up with a set of Wilson Staff D7s with heavier shafts, a little upright and thicker grips - which I hit so much better than the Cobras and other clubs I tried. When I came out the shop someone asked what I had just bought. When I told them you could see right up their nostrils! Don't be a golf snob - play with what's right for your game.
There is so many levels of elite golf, no question about it, but intrstingly World DP Tour coverages show basically every shot fron guys like Wilson, yet he were six or even more behind, while there are others, not so Brittish, who are in contention, or only few shots back the lead.
recently purchased a set(4-PW) of Ping I525. With the Project X shaft, the set was $1799 US. With the Dynamic Gold shaft, the set was $1350. While the Project X shaft was nice, it wasn't $450 nice.
I've played 23 different courses this year 19 were for the first time, I feel like I enjoy it more and generally play OK, probably because I don't have any expectations, whereas on my local course I get easily annoyed when I play a bad hole 🤷♂️ love the show thanks guys ⛳🏌️♂️
Had a set of Wilson FG V6 irons basically because they were £400 cheaper than the Taylormade's at the time There V6's are great clubs......but 3 years on now replaced with TM P770's basically because I could afford it
You guys highlighted a point, if the MENA tour is getting world points and no one knows about them, then why wouldn't LIV get world points for their golfers?
I had a package set, and broke the driver. I replaced it with a taylor made sldr 430 (was not good enough to hit it) but needed to get rid of my package set and get taylormade everything.
My second set were benross and then I handed them on to my brother. They’re a great brand for people starting out on a budget. They use good components so they work fine.
New stroke and distance rule, is for both lost and out of bounds, it is a local rule option, and you can drop in the fairway, perpendicular to where it was lost/ out if bounds, no closer to the hole. So you can have a perfect lie. 2 stroke penalty.
Plonker here from the antipodes , Just ordered some Takomo 101T irons are a lot cheaper than getting fitted for brand name irons, sent them my spec's so I hope it works out
Interesting topic discussing pricing on new clubs, especially irons. As a mizuno fan ever since I had my first proper set as a junior (MX-15s and MP60 first set I got custom fit for), currently using MP63’s and the set as lasted almost 12 years and I’m looking to upgrade next year. With custom fitting the MP63’s cost around the £500-£600 mark whereas almost any new set of mizuno irons is touching £1000+ which on the face of it is very expensive. But I do get that there’s a lot of R&D behind when you read up on what the manufacture say which would bump the price up along with other factors like inflation etc. I just hope we never see the day where drivers will be £1000+ and irons touching £2000 but if it does it wouldn’t come as a surprise. Love the videos and the podcast Rick great content
Something that drives me crazy. Mostly on the tee, people who unconsciously sniffle while youre about to tee off because of allergies. People standing behind me while im about to hit a drive. People standing up by the green when i have a nervy wedge shot…makes me think about blading it and then i usually do
Before, say 20 years ago a set of irons were eight clubs, now they are only five and prize is the same, extra club, the 4-iron can be £150~200 plus, and 3-irons are no longer even available with special order. Sure, the current 5-irons present the same loft, but then you need to have some bulky hybrids or 7/9-woods in your bag to cover the gap between 4-iron, fairway wood and driver.
Well said, I wouldn't be surprised to see manufacturers bringing back full sets (3-SW). Much as I love golf it is a game full of fads and fashions, but I guess the brands need the fashions etc to remain viable. Car manufacturers pretty much the same.
There is nothing wrong with using a tee or divot repair tool to mark the ball. If I’m in someone’s line, I’ll use a regular ball marker I have on the divot tool.
On the brand snobbery. I’m a full on Titliest fanboy these days. But, my last set of irons where a set of MD golf forged muscle backs that where amongst the best feeling clubs ive ever played. I had a couple of their wedges in the bag until recently. All well priced and always well reviewed in the golf mags.
You’ve gotta come down under 🇦🇺 and play Cottesloe Golf Club in Perth! I promise it’ll be the most beautiful golf course you’ll ever play!!! And Sea View Golf Course!!! Overlooking the Australian Ocean!
I’ve just been custom fitted for these benross br pro irons and was hitting them well in the fitting and they felt so much better than my taylormade m2 game improvement irons looking forward to getting them and starting a new season with them also I’ve just got these fitted 4-pw for £ 499 👍🤞
Finally went back and listened to some of the episodes I never watched to join the club house this week while on a break. Will have to keep on top of it now
I have old Benross clubs here in Australia and no one I speak to have heard of them. Price is the thing, if the cost the same you want the quality and brand recognition to match. If you spend the same $ on clubs that no one knows you don't get the reassurance that it's worth what you paid.
Can't be sympathetic to the argument about club costs and why the less expensive clubs would be somewhat suspect just due to their lower cost...I am using a mismatched set of clubs, most of which I bought at the local thrift shop, paying $3-$5 dollars for each...I did splurge and bought a nice driver, fairway woods and some hybrids, second hand of course, along with a new putter, but didn't spend more than $30 for any one club. I shoot consistently in the low 80's and firmly believe success in golf is all about technique, mental focus and course management, along with practice, not the clubs.
Just looked on AG at sets of irons and their most expensive are taylormade P790 Ti graphite's. 6 irons are £1999 REDUCED from £2485!!! That's ridiculous!!!
American Golf have always been trying to squeeze more margin with smaller brands, how long before they stop selling the major brands? They have done in past I remember when you couldn't find Titleist clubs in store and would try and steer you away from other major manufacturers.
Golf is just out of my price range. I'm a carer for my partner and I can only dream of playing golf. If you have to start from scratch and cannot work, it is just impossible. But that being said, watching it does make me dream bigger 👍 P.S it's not a sob story, just we all walk different paths and I wouldn't change mine for anything, not even golf 😂
@The Rapture you are right. And thank you for the advice as well. I do live within a mile of a course, so that is a bonus. Plus I'm starting to meet people who play, which is also great 👌 so maybe the stars are aligning
An off brand of clubs may perform well in the long when I go to get a new set a bigger brand name holds a better trade in value. When I upgrade my driver I trade my old one in end up paying $200 for the new one.
Rick & guy talking of inexpensive clubs i took a gamble & bought a set of Ram fx77 irons off amazon after see a review on golf monthly,I played with taylormade M3,s & got to say these irons I bought are amazing for £329 4 to pw, the feel is awesome would love you to try a set, played with a young guy to day he tried them & said he's going to get a set, please have a look😁
on the clubs discussion I don't feel like there is much technology gains in irons compared to woods, I use the Takomo 201 irons 4-pw forged £500 and I much prefer them to my old TM P770 irons, I will admit for drivers ect i haven't steered away from the main manufacturers tho as that's where I feel the technology gains are who knows
what about clubs that have micro sensors in them that produce a sound to denote where you have hit the ball, on the face. The aim is to get a " hallelujah " not a " raspberry ". Silly I know but you could do a teaching series called the Hallelujah Trail 😜
As for why brands won't make "illegal" clubs for the general market, the same reason as to why there's brand loyalty. In sports people want to wear or use the equipment the pro's use, it's almost a delusional perception that if you hit Rory or Tigers driver/irons, that you'll play like them or have the ability to do so. So, not sure how much of a market deviation an "illegal" club would incur when the "pro" version is readily available (put aside that pro's are not playing stock equipment, obviously)
I like the comments about pricey clubs and brand snobbery. I am a "working class" golfer, my village course is a 9 hole par 68 through 18 and only £12 for 18 holes. I play twice a week with the same set of clubs I had as a teenager, Hippos, with Lake balls and I'm happy as a pig in poo. Guess it depends on your goals 😁
To get into the clubhouse, do I just have to listen the all the RUclips podcast content? The podcast started before the RUclips channel. Also, please ask Rick if I can buy a life and a driver in the same store or…
First time listener of the podcast long time Shiels viewer. Really good content will be tuning in again for sure. In regards to the irons and pricing etc, is it the same situation as the Costco wedges and say, vokeys etc?
I am a huge fan of your podcast and your youtube channel. This content was just amazing and I have to say that you have stumbled onto a subject that back when I played Golf everyday, I felt very strong about. I was one of those guys that I did not want to play or use any of the major brand golf clubs. My favorite that I really enjoyed was the Snake Eyes Blades forged, and Tom Wishon golf clubs. But I must say I would love to try a set of those Ben Ross Irons, they looked amazing.

When fallin the pole makes half-pipe type rails on the soft greens especially and nobody have ever been seen repair the rails done by the stick.
Putting across such a hollow straight line, the ball is to follow the ”tube” instead of reading the line as it is.
Dear Rick. I am 70 in Jan trust me I was 36 10 weeks ago or at least it seems that short a time. GT
28:57 - from memory those little knob/buttons would attach to golf gloves hah
That brings back memories they would indeed attach to the back of the glove near the wrist area.....i remember that so well 👍
I use a tee to mark my ball on the rare occasion that I actually pick it up, however it's because I have one in the end of my putter grip so I have something to repair pitch marks.
I’m always patiently waiting for the podcast to be up on RUclips. Keep up the great work guys!!
when Texas scrambling I use either a poker chip or divot tool to mark our spot on the green. One guy I get teamed up with hates it though but won't tell me why
Regarding ball markers.. Some golf gloves have these within the press stud.. Pull the top of the press stub and use as a marker 👆
On the Ben Ross irons. For £700 you can buy some srixon zx7s from golfbidder... Not really a tough choice.
recently purchased a set(4-PW) of Ping I525.
Enjoyed that boys, thanks!
Had a set of Wilson FG V6 irons basically because they were £400 cheaper than the Taylormade's at the time
There V6's are great clubs......but 3 years on now replaced with TM P770's basically because I could afford it
You guys highlighted a point, if the MENA tour is getting world points and no one knows about them, then why wouldn't LIV get world points for their golfers?
I had a package set, and broke the driver. I replaced it with a taylor made sldr 430 (was not good enough to hit it) but needed to get rid of my package set and get taylormade everything.
My second set were benross and then I handed them on to my brother. They’re a great brand for people starting out on a budget. They use good components so they work fine.
New stroke and distance rule, is for both lost and out of bounds, it is a local rule option, and you can drop in the fairway, perpendicular to where it was lost/ out if bounds, no closer to the hole. So you can have a perfect lie. 2 stroke penalty.
Personally started playing with a set of Slazenger Seve blades, didn't know enough about golf to know it was a hard way to start.
Plonker here from the antipodes , Just ordered some Takomo 101T irons are a lot cheaper than getting fitted for brand name irons, sent them my spec's so I hope it works out
Shoutout to my early risers on the East coast! Knoxville Tennessee checking in😊
Listen to this every Tuesday night/Wednesday morning - from Brisbane , QLD
I used to rock that Slazenger balata ball back in the day!
…a set of new irons used to be 3-SW. nowadays it tends to be 5 or 6 through to P. Shrinkflation keeping the prices “down”.
I came here from just watching your eagle on the 18th at St. Andrews. Wow! “When it’s your day, it’s your day!”
I love the return of Carter has everyone doing course vlogs again. Rick and Andy course vlog in the future please!
All well priced and always well reviewed in the golf mags.
recently purchased new irons .tried callaway and ping ended up choosing homna a club I had not heard of. not cheap but lovely looking
Really good show this week very amusing
Glad you enjoyed it
If near someone else's line I use a ball marker but otherwise I use the first thing I grab out of my pocket which is typically a martini tee...
You’ve gotta come down under 🇦🇺 and play Cottesloe Golf Club in Perth! I promise it’ll be the most beautiful golf course you’ll ever play!!! And Sea View Golf Course!!! Overlooking the Australian Ocean!
Effortless chat that never fails to make me smile. 🙂
im new to the game this summer and i got a ping 410 driver cuz of you rick love the look and sound so much looking to get some ping irons to i think
Will have to keep on top of it now
Awesome!
So good to hear you mention Australia at last.... good podcast
Yessss!! Rick & Guy, we'd love for you to come to Australia 🇦🇺
Hi from Perth, Australia. Cant wait to listen
hi from Sydney, Australia, how goods this podcast!
Well G'day from Bundy lads, loving seeing my fellow Aussies in here
I have old Benross clubs here in Australia and no one I speak to have heard of them.
That club you wanted could have an angle sensor and make a beep/tone at the angle you select for a given distance!!!
@The Rick Shiels Golf Show I think this a scammer??
Just looked on AG at sets of irons and their most expensive are taylormade P790 Ti graphite's. 6 irons are £1999 REDUCED from £2485!!! That's ridiculous!!!
I bought a set of ben ross innovator irons with aldila reg shafts for £50 . Really pleased with them .
Plus I'm starting to meet people who play, which is also great 👌 so maybe the stars are aligning
i have the same pink issue, but i broke them playing Basketball - it feel weird with a golf grip sometimes
Always listing to these right when they come out, even if it’s 4am in California haha
An off brand of clubs may perform well in the long when I go to get a new set a bigger brand name holds a better trade in value. When I upgrade my driver I trade my old one in end up paying $200 for the new one.
Laughed more than usual. Great job guys x
Love the podcast as usual ❤
Come to Perth, Australia.....it's warm here
what about clubs that have micro sensors in them that produce a sound to denote where you have hit the ball, on the face.
So, not sure how much of a market deviation an "illegal" club would incur when the "pro" version is readily available
(put aside that pro's are not playing stock equipment, obviously)
I needed this today. Thank you for brightening up my mind.
Any time!
Normally people's fingers get bent from getting hurt at some point, and if not properly Splinted , will heal with less flexibility.
Hey Rick, have you got your hands on one of the goodgood putters yet?
Loving these podcasts Rick all the way from Melbourne Australia.
At my club, we still give out plastic ball markers with the little peg on the bottom. They certainly haven''t gone away in the USA.
To get into the clubhouse, do I just have to listen the all the RUclips podcast content? The podcast started before the RUclips channel.
Also, please ask Rick if I can buy a life and a driver in the same store or…
Hi everyone, I’m on holiday in Abu Dhabi, been to yas links, city golf club and Abu Dhabi golf club, absolutely living a dream
First time listener of the podcast long time Shiels viewer.
Really good content will be tuning in again for sure.
In regards to the irons and pricing etc, is it the same situation as the Costco wedges and say, vokeys etc?
American Golf has announced a new partnership with Golfbidder, one of the biggest names in pre-owned golf equipment
Video or podcast idea: Callan barrow, elite amateur player based at Royal Lytham, plays for England. has won elite amateur tournaments and has just got to the 3rd stage of Q school for the DP world. He was on the books at manchester united ad only started playing golf when he was released at 15 so has a really interesting story and is some player. Would make a really interesting podcast of video.
