@Bigwave2003 Almost all of the footwear sold in the UK (around 98%) is now sourced from abroad, but there is currently no legal requirement to label goods with their country of origin. Loake are extremely proud of our manufacturing heritage and tradition and the fact that we still produce shoes in England. We believe that it is correct to mark them with their Country of origin. All of our 1880 and Evolution ranges of shoes are made in the UK, as are all the Goodyear welted 'Shoemaker' styles.

LoakeShoemakers I am a big fan of your shoes. I have in my LOAKE collection the 200, 771 and the ESPOM which is my favorite style. I wear the last one the most because it’s rugged and dressy at the same time and I really love the commando sole on it. Could you please do the EPSOM in different colours and in boot style as well. They are the perfect everyday shoes.
I also have to say that your repair service is top notch!
      Kind regards,
      Willy

I bought my first pair of Loake shoes just yesterday. The 771 burgundy model, I wanna say. The polish actually turns chocolate-y under artificial light - Just amazing. Can't stop staring at the polish, at the stitching and smile. The perfect derby shoe if you ask me. I was born and bred in an Italian shoemaking district so don't tell anyone. I'm writing this cos my girlfriend told me to stop talking about my new shoes.

All uppers are made in India even on the 1880 range. Making most of the shoe in India, finishing them in the U.K. and saying they are English made is just misleading. Do your research people

Loake source what we can in the UK, but many of the materials we use are not obtainable within the UK. For example, there are not any suitable tanneries to supply us with upper leather in England. Most of our upper leather is sourced from Italy.
We exist in a global economy and have to get what we need from wherever it is commercially available, but whoever the supplier and whatever the country of origin, we do our best to ensure that materials and components are from ethically sound sources.

I am a very close descendent to Loake brothers. I am the granddaughter to Margaret Francis Loake. My grandmother married in their time “ beneath her” to my grandad A.Miller. Sadly she was written out of the family’s money and connections because of her choice in love. ( I do believe that her mom did help grandma financially when she married.)
It’s so sad that we no longer have connection to the family I have met a few elder members at family funerals like my grandma and my dads. I am the daughter to Timothy Lance Miller. One of my grandmas (was Loake married as Mille) two sons that she had.
I would have love to known more regarding my family ( only so much you can google) sadly we wouldn’t be welcomed to new generations now. How sad that people couldn’t marry for love back in the day if they were of wealth and encouraged to marry someone on par with their level. My dad was named after their gardener that my grandmother liked Timothy. So here is a little information about the unspoken side of The Loake brothers,

Average cost of a ready to wear Loake = £180/£220
    Average cost of a RTW Lobb = £700/£900 to £7000 to £9000
As with all things, you get what you pay for, Lobbs are stunning quality but no way on God's green earth are they 10,20 or 30 times better than any other brand, let alone Loake.
Loakes made in England, GW, full grain 1880 series (and equiv' Loakes) are excellent value and will give decades of service if looked after as directed.

I work in the shoe business and my family has a long history in shoe making (since 1935), so it's not new for me to see how it is done, but this film captures the essence of the love for the art.

Yes the 1880 line is the way to go by Loakes. It would be interesting to see a good craftsman break down shoes from Loake, C&J, Alden Edmond etc for a deeper examination of the quality behind the craftmanship rathen than saying what we should buy because of reputation and advertisement.

The current shoes I wear are a pair of Suede boots from Matalan which cost me around £20 so this is going to be quite a step up I think! Surprised more people haven't brought up the recent exposure of most of their lines being made in India including the 1880 line (which I believe only the uppers get made in India).
Regardless of quality, I'm sure most consumers who care about the finer details would be disappointed and look elsewhere for a shoe that's genuinely made in England.
Would anyone else be able to shed a light on this?

muffemod Even the 1880 uses Indian stitched uppers. The 1880 is distinguished from the "shoemakers" (the other made in England line) by better quality calfskin. Pretty much all their uppers are stitched in India nowadays, its why they are so much cheaper than the likes of Cheaney and Crocketts.

... that beautiful upper wasted by sewing it and the welt to the ribbing .. there is a machine that sews the welt through the upper, liner and insole just like a handmade shoe is constructed ( holdfast ) that results in higher quality production welted shoes and boots although to my knowledge the machine is no longer in use.... fabricating a welted shoe without ribbing lasts much longer thus reducing the need for more production and less profit for shoe making companies.
The fabric side of ribbing is cemented to the insole edge while the hardened composite side of the ribbing is elevated vertically creating a wall in which to sew the welt, liner and upper to. Because the ribbing is cemented to the insole it loses its bond and breaks down over time compared to sewing the welt, upper and liner to the insole. In addition , the insole that the ribbing is affixed to is not high quality material and also breaks down and loses its resilience in a relatively short period of time. About four months ago I as resoling a good year welted oxford and noticed the ribbing was stitched to the insole and it was made in China. I commend the company for taking the extra time to secure the ribbing ( gemming ) to the insole. At least they understand the short comings of ribbing and try to improve upon its use. I am a shoe repairman and have been refurbishing leather goods, footwear and filling Orthopedic prescriptions for over 35 years. I work for Maselli Brothers Shoe and Leather Goods Repair in Pleasanton Ca. .

You can have them shipped to the US using either Loake's website, Pediwear, or Herring Shoes.

Such a shame all uppers even on the “English made” ranges like the 1880 are all made in India. Very misleading

After Doc Marten decided to discontinue their Affleck like of brogue boots, I'm turning to Loake now. Why? Because of Peter Capaldi and Doctor Who and I'd like a pair of boots like that. Spending $300 US on boots is not something I wish to do nor find joy in doing so. However, good boots will cost a lot. DM's were the next best alternate, but why not go for the actual brand that the 12th Doctor wears? So with that said. Anyone have Loake coupons?

Pun intended? Achilles heel... ba dum tss. Anyway, thanks for the information. The pair of boots I'm looking at have the same style as Doc Marten. Thick rubber sole, brogue wingtip design. Mostly because DM stopped making their brogue wingtip boots and I can't seem to find a pair of those in black. So Loake is the only other choice out there for that style. Thick rubber sole, 7 eye wingtip with brogue design in black.

Everybody uses "PR" to bump up prices, you really think an Audi is better than a Skoda? You really think Cheaney costs more because it's "better"? I don't on the basis I've owned several different makes and none last or wear better than the other, but I do know that a £50 pair of shoes from M&S or Next use inferior leather, and will never shine up properly. I'm a fan of Loakes as they're easily bought at significantly lower prices than the rest of the Northampton crowd.
