I love Robert Jordan's series. I like reading about all the stupid stuff... food and drinks and stories and women straightening their dresses... it gives the world a lot of depth.
Brandon Sanderson finished it out as strong as could be, he did a great job.
Yeah, that's just not my sort of reading that I enjoy so I ended up skimming a lot of those descriptions.
Man, your face and eyes shine when you talk about Malazan… not that it doesn’t deserve it
Your channel is seriously awesome. I'm really happy I found it. I can't wait til you have a zillion subs and I can be a Matt hipster because I was here in the early days.
LOL
Thanks so much, that is super nice of you!
the fact that Brandon's three books were best of the bunch...That's what hurts.
Always makes my day to see these videos come out!!! Just about to watch!
Thanks so much Dino!
Dude I could listen to you rave about the Malazan books for hours. Currently on House of Chains and I am already beyond hooked...just can't get enough of it. Absolutely cannot wait to keep reading, and the way you describe how the books go....I am PSYCHED. Love your channel, man!
Thanks Ethan! Enjoy the ending of House of Chains, it's a banger!
Heck yeah! I’m exited to join the Malazan discord eventually, once I finish the main series. Definitely gonna read all the Esslemont books and the Korbelain and Broach ones as well!
I was watching my feed all week for this! 🎉
Nice!
Me too
Hearing you talk about Abercrombie and Jordan and Gwyenne have me hyped for my next few months of reading. Finishing WOT and first law, and starting Faithful and the Fallen. Great as always Matt
Thanks Edwin! Happy reading!
I convinced myself the reaper twist was too obvious to be real then it happened and I was blown away... all the little scribes going off all over the world freaking out was so cool
A destroyer has come.
The Destroyer has come.
Yeah, absolutely gave me HUGE chills.
Gathering Storm is the 12th book in the Wheel of Time series, not the 13th :)
Whoops!
Loving these videos. You provide a fantastic insight of each of these books and I’m definitely taking notes. Keep up the great work!!
Thanks so much Michael!
Ayy! Nice to see the artwork by "LeChatDemon" on The wandering inn! Very glad you're enjoying the series!
Absolutely fantastic! Can't wait for the next installment in this series!
Thanks, I can't wait to share it with you!
As someone who just read Deadhouse Gates, I totally connect with your thoughts on Felisin. Yes, she kinda sucks for the other characters but it's a direct result of the terrible trauma she endured.
I just constantly felt so bad for her - as well as her travelling companions. Just a sad story all around.
The main strength of Robert Jordan was world building adding layer after layer. His weakness is resolving plot lines. He certainly had problems killing characters or just writing them out of the story to their own sunset. My problem with the Sanderson novels is that he brushed past Mat and he was my favourite of the main characters. That’s the issue when a fan, even a talented fan, is asked to complete a series they have favourites and Mat was not a favourite.
Yeah, and as a huge Mat fan that was a bit of a disappointment - good point!
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews I’ll put my own hand up and admit I was pushing through the books by this point. I just wanted to get to the end and the travails this series underwent were testing. I’m actually happy that the tv series cut huge chunks out because it makes it easier to enjoy. I agree that overall the Malazan series is a better read than the wheel of time. Mat would fit into that world very nicely.
@@stevenredpath9332 C’mon man, the Sanderson WoT novels are F’ing incredible while the show is a massive letdown.
@@bookdmb they might be for you but after those long years of waiting I have a different perspective. And short of 30 episodes there was never going to be the full adaptation of the first book. They crafted a reasonably amount given the constraints they were under and remained generally faithful to the novel unlike, for example, the foundation series.
1. Amen on Brandon's entries to the WoT being upgrades! I'm all in on that blasphemy of yours.
2. I just finished the Faithful and The Fallen. I was very impressed. Couldn't put the books down. My main beef with Gwynne was too many fake out deaths and too many "I have you now!" moments where a bad guy is going down then somehow gets away in the last second. Seemed like a cheap way to extend the run time. But that’s mostly a quibble. Superb series. I love his new Viking one too.
3. I liked Name of the Wind too. But not enough to read the sequel
Yeah Gwynne does too much of what you described. It's one of the things I wished he cooled down on.
Definitely agree with you regarding Felisin. Love some Malazan!
Thanks! It shocks me that people could have a differing opinion, but it really is a prevalent one that she is an unlikeable character.
The specific character you’re talking about in Ruin became an absolute favorite by that book! Such an amazing thing John Gwynne was able to do with a lot of these characters. I think I read all 4 books back to back in a month or so because each subsequent one was better than the last for me
Yeah I didn't do it back to back, but I absolutely moved them way up in my reading order so I could keep them all fresh in my mind.
Closing in on the top books.
Love the hoodie btw :D
Thanks Marto!
I'm so eager for what's coming up, this is a great series.
Thanks, I can't wait to share the next one!
Hi 👋 you got wonderful books on ur list!! Most of my favourite authors on ur list!! Happy reading to you!! 🎥🎞
Thanks as always Safina!
I just started reading malice, and bought the bundle. I'm not super high on the book so far (30%) in but it definitely has started to dig its hooks into me. I'll definitely be working my way quickly thru this series because I read that 30 percent in a sitting
Yeah the series starts slow, and really pops off at the end of the first book and doesn't let off from there.
I completely agree with you about The Name of the Wind. The prose doesn't normally make or break a book for me either, but it did make that one. I had to laugh when you said you picked it up when George R R Martin stopped righting the Game of Thrones books, because we all know that same thing eventually happened with this one too. 😂
Yeah, and then quickly after that I picked up Gentlemen Bastards which did the same thing. I'm cursed!
Enjoying this serie so much.🥰 but you really prefer the slower paced books. I always get bored when I read Jordan, Rothfuss, Hobb.. stories..😅
I do really like them, but you'll see the top books on my list are MOSTLY fast paced. Just haven't got to that point yet :)
I loved Sanderson’s WoT entries. I think Sanderson, and I believe he’s said as much, that he is specifically writing for readability and access to a broad audience and that is great. But what Robert Jordan was doing and what he could’ve done feels so much more complex and interesting to me.
I do think it’s a strange assumption to say that Egwene fans must have become fans because of Sanderson. I’m glad that it happened for you that way, but not even a little bit true for me as an Egwene and Mat fan.
I've read the Egwene thing from multiple people - but obviously people could have loved her at any point like you said. I just think she developed so much in this book and become an absolutely wonderful character.
i love your reviews!!
Thank you Braeden!
Trying to get caught up on these as I know you're near the end! We'll need to talk Wheel of Time sometime, because I totally disagree with Gathering Storm and Towers of Midnight being top 3 in the series. Thanks for your thoughts on Name of the Wind - it's been on and off the TBR for years, but it's probably back on again.
What are your top few WoT books?
Also, you really have to try Name of the Wind. There's a reason it's so ridiculously well known.
Top three would probably be Knife of Dreams, A Memory of Light and either Fires of Heaven or the Shadow Rising. I actually missed Jordan's writing when Sanderson took over, although I feel he stuck the landing remarkably!
I always always liked Felisin too. But I enjoyed HoC too tho in general. Wasn’t disappointed at all in HoC.
Yeah I think what puts most people off is the Karsa stuff at the beginning.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews that was my favorite part of the book myself. His history was fascinating
Takin’ bets on how many Malazan books make the top 10! My money’s on 4-5.
Noted!
Love this. Sanderson, Rothfuss. 😍
Thank you!
Feeding that algo!
NOM NOM!
New video dropped and the weekend suddently became more interesting.
Lol thank you!
Love wandering inn. It repeatedly makes me care (love/despise/sympathise/digust at/etc) about characters within a paragraph of 'meeting' them. Also agree on it getting better - having read up to date (Inc website) I'd say almost every book/volume after book one is even better than the first
That's so great to hear. I'm so hyped about this series and can't wait to keep reading it!
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Me too! Also worth mentioning that there's a re-write of volume one coming to check out. The kindle version got a little bit of editing it's pretty much the authors first ever written work so they're going back to apply what they've learnt in the years since
I am currently reading red country and i have to agree with you that the standalones are a noticeable step down from the original trilogy
Yeah I don't think our opinion is a majority one, and I've read constantly from people who actually PREFER the standalones. They are good, just not "great" in my opinion.
I don't know if you have read the other ones, but I thought Red Country was the weakest of the ones I've read. Heroes is pretty great imo.
@@ndza702 I've read the books in order up to this point. I definitely respect the Heroes as a book and i think its a book that especially writers or people appreciating the art of writing probably love the most but it i didnt think it explored any special themes. Personally, i love the first trilogy for the deconstruction of the typical fantasy genre, the subversion of tropes and the awesome characters. In best served cold i thought it was too formulaic although i really liked the arcs of Shivers and Monza. Overall i think the standalones miss scope in the story imo
How would you recommend reading the Malazan books? Should I start with the entire Book of the fallen series and then read Esslemont or should I read in publicantion order?
DEFINITELY read Malazan Book of the Fallen (the 10 books by Erikson) and then read Esslemont afterwards. Reading in publication order and mixing the authors doesn't serve any purpose other than being interesting to people on a re-read.
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Thank you! Have long been wondering about that so feels nice to get an answer from someone who has read both authors 😊
Felisin and Auri ... 💕😊💞💕😊💞
Hear, hear!
You said that the wandering Inn is the biggest series ever. That is not quite true if you take a Look at Perry Rhodan.
Yeah I meant to say biggest fantasy series.
44 seconds shorter than the last one 🔥🔥🔥 We’ll reach our goal of 30 minutes by 2030 surely!😂
😂😂😂
Lol. Progress!
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Keep 'em long. I enjoy your insight
The longer the better!
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews and btw it’s pronounced kv-oath, not complaining though 😂
Do you have a notebook that you take notes of books in? Or do you remember all of the books you read well? I have to take notes of amazing parts or quotes to remember books as well as you do. Am I alone in this?
I write reviews on goodreads for all the books I read so I can always fall back on those to refresh.
Is Jacqueline Carey's The Sundering somewhere on your list?
No, never read it!
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews Um, I posted a response to this but it seems to be missing. Did I do something wrong?
@@Urizen61 Not sure! I didn't delete it.
Anyways, The Sundering is comprised of two books, Banewreaker & Godslayer. Imagine the Lord of the Rings told from Sauron's pov. The Sundering is available in different formats but you may have trouble finding the paperbacks. It is well worth your while. Although I can't say whether you would rank these books as being in the top 100 fantasy books of all time.
Wait....So the ten Malazan books are not your top 10? haha. Did I hear right that 2 of them didn't make the top 100?
Lol no they arent all top 10, but we do have 7 more to go!
Yeah I don't have Gardens of the Moon or Dust of Dreams in top 100. On a reread I'm sure Gardens would make it. But I had a lot of problems with Dust.
You meeeeeeean "comprises", not "compromises", right? :)
lol where did I say that in the video?
@@MattsFantasyBookReviews it was in "A Little Hatred" segment.
