I made custom Zoom Air Jordan 1's using a shoe parts I had.
The Jordan 1 mid got deconstructed, rebuilt and put to the test in the real world and I found out pretty quick how much prep goes in to custom sneakers and sneaker restoration.

As a foot doctor I look at basketball shoes and basketball sneaker technology a bit differently as I focus more on what foot types benefit from these shoes as well as the basketball shoe's functional attributes on the basketball court

I think you did an amazing job with this hybrid aj. Nike should take note.
They already make the Jordan 1 zoom cmft!
@@nickrenton2668 the outsole isn't the same. This hybrid AJ 1 he made can be used to play basketball.
@@nickrenton2668 that's jus softer foam&heel zoom now. They changed from the full length bag, before they released any good CW's.
Few years ago Nike made AJ I Alpha with full length zoom
Thanks!
The hybrid projects are my favorite, I feel like it makes shoes interesting when companies come out with the same thing over and over again
I would love to see more modified shoes in the future.
I’ve always thought of replacing the visible air units in the Jordan 4/3s with the exposes zoom air max units in the Lebron 15/16s.
[Warning: LONG POST] I was looking into this for a project before so I'll dump my "research" here for anyone thinking about this:
There are apparently four versions of Zoom AJ1s that were ever officially made
1) Air Jordan Alpha 1, (teardown in footnote [1]) which is visually similar to this one, but has a foam midsole unit incorporating a full length Zoom unit as seen in this video, of a slightly thicker variety.
2) Air Jordan Retro 1 Zoom, which was available in several colours one of which had a translucent outsole. This is said to have a full length Zoom unit inside. However, some people say this model fit smaller than normal AJ1s, because the dimensions of the cupsole are the same, but normal AJ1 do not have any foam or cushioning in the forefoot at all.
3) Air Jordan 1 Zoom Cmft, which seems to have only heel Zoom, but I am not sure whether that is in the shoe or just a pod under the insole.
4) Air Jordan 1 Centre Court (Teardown in footnote [2]), which has the zoom pod in the heel on the insole, but also has the normal air unit in the heel as well.
From 2) and 4), we know that officially, stacking extra height on top of the heel and in the forefoot is possible. If you just want the effect in the video, you might consider buying 1) or 2), as they are official implementations of this setup essentially.
You can get Zoom units on eBay by searching "nike zoom insole" or something similar. I don't know or think they are real. You used to be able to find the right search terms to get a greater variety on AliExpress. (update: seems like they're back, the shoeDIY store (aliexpress slash store slash 911956245) Seems like there are three sizes, small, medium (8-10.5), and large (11+) The most common ones that can be found are
1) Full length Zoom, either in typical 8mm or so and in a special 14mm thickness occasionally, which was originally used in one of the LeBron shoes a long time ago
2) fake looking full insoles with two units on them, but they are of unknown quality
3) normal full length air units
You can also get Zoom units from old shoes either at a second hand store or on eBay. Here are common or easy to find ones, for reference.
1) Normal forefoot and rearfoot units: Pegasus 32, 33, 34, 39
2) Full length embedded Zoom: Pegasus 35, 36 (7mm), KD 11 for thicker
3) Zoom Stroebel: KD 12, 13, 14, 15. The size is very important for these, as well as the shape! The running shoes appear to have the same pattern, but AF1 has a different pattern!
4) Thick forefoot unit: Pegasus 37, 38
You may want to keep the foam from teardown shoes, you might be able to dremel/cut the part out you need, because the foam on the sides of the Zoom unit is important for stability. It would be difficult to manually create this contour. You may also find it useful to get some cheap React shoes to cut up.
If you have or find damaged or popped Zoom units, they can be repaired (carefully) using a soldering iron to melt the plastic and seal up whatever damage occurs to them. This process also works with pretty much every other Nike Air shoes. The primary failure mode for older units appears to be that they start showing small cracks where the material flexes a lot and this causes small leaks. They can be reinflated with a needle, the thinner the better, and you can use a piece of inner tube to rubber cement over the area (hold patch over hole and press down while taking out needle). You can also cut off unneeded parts of the material and melt them on. There is a technique to this and I can make a video about it if there is demand.
The material is TPU. Thus, you should choose glues that work with TPU to glue Zoom units.
You can install Zoom Stroebel units to shoes by hand, but you need to use a stronger needle or have a way to hold the needle. It is difficult to do this by hand because the leather is hard to sew. The stroebel stitch used at the factory is replicable at home. You should take apart the original stitching to see how it is done. I have figured it out and it is time consuming but not non-doable. Set aside a few hours. You may choose to do half the density of the original (skip holes) and it will be quite strong still.
This research was primarily done using not AJ1, but rather AF1. These are very commonly available usually, so they are good for experiments. If you would like a very very extreme stack up of different materials, this is the best shoe to modify, because there is the most space internally to add stuff without changing the fit or size characteristics. If you can find the "John Elliot" ones or some "Luxe" or similar one with the drop in Lunarlon/zoom midsoles, this is the best because you can do all of your hacking on a midsole that can be easily removed, rather than taking the actual shoe apart. The first gen React AF1 is also good for this reason. Teardowns of most except the newer Flyknit ones with the one piece foam outsole and midsole are common. I don't know how those are made.

That channel has a bunch of teardown videos, so it may be a resource if you are looking for components to hack.
As someone who rocks Mids all the time, I can’t say how happy that makes me that you rocked a custom pair to a big fancy shoe shindig in L.A. The haters minds will be blown once you drop that on-foot action wearing AJ 1 mids. Please show us how it went at the event.
This is awesome, something I’ve been dreaming of for a while and now it’s been done
Love your videos!!
Thanks!
Hope to see you do something like this again!
nice video, good exp
Love your mad scientist stuff! 👨🔬
I subscribed for the custom/mods to the sneakers. I would appreciate more. Thanks.
Very cool stuff
That's a lot of work. When I wear my J1s or J3s I just swap out the insole with a full length zoom cushlon insole I ordered from Hong Kong a few years back. So comfy and plush to walk around in. I recommend having these spare insoles handy for extra comfort
Where can I get these? Like a website, this is something I’ve been looking for
Good job 👍🏽
From FootDoctor to ShoeCobbler in nine minutes and fifty four seconds!
I believe Air Jordan Alpha 1 was a upgraded full length zoom of the Jordan 1's only for limited release. That was their own 'protro' type shoe.
Jordan 1 Alphas were made with zoom air in them, and a synthetic upper.
Not a strobel zoom, just bottom loaded full length zoom. More playable than the original 1s.
Sick! I have a pair of full length zoom + PU insoles that I never take out of my AJ1s, makes them comfortable enough to play real basketball in for 3+ hours
I would absolutely love to see if you could put a full length zoom strobel unit in the Nike Kobe AD NXT FF.
Ayee shout out Cedar Point!
Bro, can you do this with the Kobe 4 Protro and make a video about it? It was such a bummer when Nike lied about putting full length zoom in the Kobe 4 protros back in 2019. You're the only one on the world wide web that can pull it off. Keep up the good work Dr. Zach!
I don't think I'll ever dare to do something like this to the sneakers I like.
But very interesting content, thank you!
Are you a orthopedic or something? Love the technical stuff, just started watching and already learnt a whole lot more then school 👍🏻
Yep podiatrist - thanks!
I love your custom made kick videos. definitely my fav ones you make, but not saying the others arent also great. One thing i though of while you were doing this, which essentially would just make it a sole swap, is usng the jordan 1 zoom sole for the swap. They dont seem to sell so well either, so it might be a decent option cost wise, and way less work for you!
Yeah but way less manufactured drama haha
put the zoomX insole from one of the running shoes into it also ;)
I used to cut another regular insole around the zoom unit, tape it around the zoom make it level.
i would like to see make a review of this hybrid like your basketball shoe reviews (dont cut them in half)
Cool vid! Dope that you did something different
Glad you liked it
Pretty neat idea. Definitely limit the acetone usage when taking off the upper because the acetone degrades the leather.
a fan from 🇵🇭 btw
I've had a shoe mod/retrofit project waiting on the shelf (something considerably jankier that jordans lol) for a while now, and I will be unabashedly learning from some of your beginner mistakes 🙃
Looks like you used the barge super stik cement?
Please make guides on shoes for daily long walks for normal and overweight people. Could share budget friendly to expensive shoes and your feedback. Thanks
Nike did an AJ1 with zoom strobel, it’s the Air Jordan 1 High Zoom Space Hippie. Awesome video though 👍
Aj1’s are my my signature shoe on court, great for everything except my knees especially as an explosive guard… Any chance you do a performance review on these, the zoom aj1 , or zoom cmft aj1?
Would be a great series if you did "fixing" or "correcting" the shoes you dissect and review on your channel.
They did something similar with the AJ1 Zooms from a year or two ago and they made a similar mistake. They didn't hollow out the midsole properly and your foot ends up not having the same amount of space in the shoe. I think the KD12s had fixed this issue by having special insoles that filled in the gaps of the zoom bag, making your foot sit flat in the shoe again. Those were really comfortable but too narrow for my foot overall.
u should cut open the air jordan 1 zooms (not the zoom comforts) since those have a zoom strobel stitched into the upper and the tooling might have the cavity u tried to create in ur custom.
hi Zach 😁 I hope you'll see this message.
I just wanted to say 2 things.
1. I'm actually subscribe to your channel for a long time now 😜 and really wanted to say thanks for all of your video's.2. Can you talk about the Giannis immortality please, I bought the shoes and wanted to see what you think of them and see if we can make people buy it caz it's awesome 👍🏼, Im sorry for my bad grammar I'm not from US
Jordan should just make a regular 1 with a zoom stroble unit inside it, they would sell out so fast. None of the goofy designs like the current zoom 1s. Sick customs fella
Can u make a video cutting open Nike air zoom Pegasus 38 or 39 👟
You should review the Artengo tennis shoe, They might be the steal of the century for how affordable they are, and how much tech they have
The ones I tried a year or so ago exploded on me
@@FootDoctorZach yikes
hey doctor how about putting zoom air in air max pre day or air max flyknit?
i think they are perfect match
If Nike did this, I’d probably buy a pair and try to hoop in them. The Jordan ones are Hands down the best looking Jordan’s to exist to date.
Nike does do this… it’s called the Jordan One Zoom CMFT
@@stalefacegoldteeth that’s just the rear. Which is better than none. I did however, see they make a Jordan 1 Alpha. Which in a huge fan of the ALPHA ••••• line they used to have. Might look into those even though they are about over 10 years old.
Could you make a tutorial about how to get the air zoom units out of a sneaker, without breaking them ?
Hot water method.
just buy some on ebay
Do a J1 with an air strobel!
I did the same like 20 years ago, I put heel zoom unit in the adidas T-Mac. It worked, but sockliner have been destroyed pretty quickly since there was no flat surface inbetween.
That’s my biggest worry with how I did mine
Would be nice to be able to buy some zoom turbo units...
Wow! I'm here after only 7 minutes!
I just wish that Jordan Brand would release an Air Jordan 1.5.
Same silhouette with modern materials.
"I need a pair of sneakers.
I have a ton of them, but they are all cut in half.
Oh, wait!
I have one pair that is not cut in half!
OK, so let's cut that one apart, too!" 🤣
Hahaha
Nike made back in 2000s Zoom Air Jordan 1s which is called Jordan 1 Alpha, i like concept and i always wondered how it feels with full length zoom air unit
Can u do a cut open of Nike Pegasus 38 or 39
Hiii can you try put a zoom air in a Luka?
Please also tell what glue are you using for this project
What are your thoughts on sole swapping a basketball shoe into a cleat.
Or better yet could I turn my Jordan’s into cleats?
Would this work with air uptempo models or a air zoom 95? I have a pair or Fila bubbles that I would to try and remodel for modern basketball
Nike does make this it is called the Jordan 1 zoom comfort
Try it with shoes with drop in midsoles
It we be cool if you add Air max like kd 7
hey barricade or trae young 1 or harden vol6 for tennis hard court ? i recently sprained my ankle playing tennis
How did you take out the zoom?
What is the name of the glue that you are using??
What glue did you use?
You should put them in air Jordan 3’s
#FootDrCustoms incoming..... 😉
You need a shoe last to make assembling easier and precise
+1 for Cedar Point
Nike gotta step it up!
Should use a q-tip and a little bit of acetone to get rid of the glue marks and you would have been good to go
I tried and it still didn’t look 100% - it was pretty rough at the start when the uppers rode higher but I saw a few others just dremel and paint and it looked great - I’m no artist though
If anyone wants a similar shoe, you can try to find a pair of Jordan 1 Retro zoom. It has a full-length zoom strobel like the one in this custom, and they're usually not as expensive as the more popular high cut retros!
beware they fit half size smaller than the regular 1s cause of the Zoom strobel! Go half size up
Hey Zach, know the release date for the new Adidas Ubersonic 5 ?
No idea
So basically a Jordan 1 Zoom Cmft with a classic look
There’s another pair of shoes which doc hasn’t cut in half. The Air Jordan 36 lows 👀
Could you have stitched the Zoom stroble to the board last without removing the cup sole & upper?
Doubtful tbh
Actually you can buy a full length zoom insole online
hold on man thats illegal, hold on
Straight up I would pay you for this, no bs I’m all for this lol I just don’t trust myself to do it!😂
Haha maybe one day I’ll give them away
@@FootDoctorZach shoooooot where do I sign!?😂
Is jordan 36 better than 37?
Why didn’t you wear the 3’s in the back 😟
I always loved eating air jordan 1's💀
Love from India.
I personally just stick my zoom insoles into Jordan 1s. I swap the insoles
did u know Jordan already has been making them? haha. it’s called the Air Jordan 1 Zoom CMFT 😅
it messes up the heel to toe drop thou
mIDs??!1?1?! 🤯😭
You know you can buy some jordan comfort zoom 1 s or just put an insole in it like hefelux boost insoles everybody that wears jordan 1s is doing that
I hope Nike approved me in Nike company as custom designer .
Paint the red on the eye stay black
AJ1 Alpha, anyone?
The problem of the first retro is the lack of foam in the toe. One zoom will not be enough, over time it will sag and fail. I solve the problem with a thick orthopedic sports insole. You can also buy a hight 85 version. There is a very thick insole. At the moment, three models of 85 have been released. Neutral gray, reverse bred and georgetown. Sorry, I'm writing through a translator, I'm from Ukraine. PS: I hate and do not advise anyone to take the mid version. Only hight OG. In the mid version, the skin is of poor quality and part of the substitute.
Do you ever regret cutting your shows
Nah
Let’s goooo
Early gang
Wear what you like. Don't let these better-than-thou losers make you think like you're unfit because what you like doesn't meet THEIR standards.
Sneaker culture is full of these losers and they need to be told off. Wear what you like!
You could of just purchased a zoom insoles
just pick a bigger size pair and put in zoom insoles.
Stop cutting the same side, alternate so you can mix and match.
why not just put it under the insoles?
Then it’s just an insert that can flop around- I wanted it as part of the shoe to feel like a true zoom
You can just buy zoom air insoles to put in.
Too easy
Lol
Hi 👋
Why are your pg 6's blood stained
