I kind of want to see you test interior detailing products.
Car paint is usually water based now. Maybe there are issues with that?
These are also available at autozone (in case you don’t want to wait for delivery to see your clean headlights). Probably o’reilys too but I know for sure at autozone because that’s where I bought my McGuires kit a few months back
You went for the flashy marketing on the headlight kits, absolute best headlight restoration kit is the 3M kit that comes in the clamshell package.
Bought the Meguiars, thanks!
I love this channel cause it's just a regular dude doing stuff not acting all enthusiastic and cringe it's great

The problem with any home fixes is the don't apply a new UV coating. So after like a month they'll turn yellow and foggy again. You need to apply a UV clear coat after you sand it.
I've done a few by wet sanding, starting around 500 grit, then going up to about 7,000, then polishing with compound. I haven't had issues with yellowing. I didn't apply UV clear either. It's been about two years and they are still clear. This was after removing a heavy amount of oxidation. I've done the same on other cars, and they still look good. I wonder if making the surface so smooth with wet sanding and polishing allows it to bounce enough UV that it doesn't yellow quickly.
The Meguiars spray treatment wears out after about a year. That's pretty accurate with what I've experienced using it. It even says on the box you may have to redo it. For a 20 that's not too bad.
@@arcanask there's plenty of both solutions in the box to last multiple treatments. I don't mind having to do it again next year. It took less than 15 minutes and looks better than it ever did using the toothpaste method, which probably just made it worse in the long run.
Hit the covers with 210 Plastic Cleaner and Polish every 6 months you'll never see yellow.
Ya duh! Coat it with a special product made for the purpose.
Gotta admit, I've wanted to know if these things actually worked for years. Good to know we got Tyler to solve it
Just need to put a sealant on them on occasion. I just use Turtle wax headlight cleaner and sealer on occasion. It will keep it from getting bad by removing any oxidation and seal. Only need to do it s few times a year.
@@STRIKER520 cool. I'll use that tip for the future. Though I meant there were commercials on TV that would say this headlight stuff works great. Wanted to know if they ever actually worked. Based off of Tyler's results, some do.
@@KitsuneFyora iirc Project Farm did a more extensive review and found 3M's product to be the best when it comes to headlight restoration.
There are about a dozen different methods of "restoring" headlights, and they do work...very temporarily. But the results are similar to what people get when they "restore" old yellowed gaming consoles and controllers etc. The plastic has oxidized from prolonged exposure to sunlight. And no matter what you do the bromides created during that process are still there and cannot be removed. It will look amazing right after you do it, but they will yellow again within a month or two.
This is an extremely short term fix. If you plan on keeping the car you're better off just getting new headlights unless you want to have to repeat this process every couple of months. These kinds of processes are only really practical if you're just trying to make it look good for a very short period of time so you can deceive the person you're trying to sell something to.
I bought my current car used, and the headlights are awful. Never seen such bad headlights, but the rest of the car is good and mechanically sound. (Purchased from a mechanic who let me take it for 2 hours, and I drove it to my mechanic who went over it.) So cloudy headlights weren't gonna stop the sale.
Haven’t watched yet, but I’m assuming Tyler is gonna call the product trash about 12 minutes after he threw the directions away.
Edit: Well fuck me, he actually read the directions
Not all true
@@steph2475 atleast you watched it lol
@@steph2475 I was gonna come here to say, “well, SURPRISE! He read the directions this time!” Lol
I love his comments sections.
After watching your demo I decided to try the Meguiar's Two Step Headlight Restoration Kit. My lights were worse than yours and I was thinking about just getting new covers. As a matter of fact last year I had them professionally cleaned and they did not charge me because they did not come clean. Anyway, I put the 1st step on and let it dry. Because they were so bad I did a second coat. After wiping them clean with a damp cloth as the directions said, they had that frosty look. I did the spray, waited 5 minutes and did the spray again. I can only say they look amazing. The kit cost 14 dollars and I still have more than enough to do them again in a few months. Love your channel and thanks on this one.
For anybody wondering, another fast way is to get some 400 grit sand paper and 2000grit sand then put on any type of spray clear coat, make sure it’s uv resistance, I’ve done it this way for ever and they look brand new and last long time
I second this method. Tried and true.
The "don't put on paint" thing is because paint's color degrades with UV exposure and if you smear that UV protection on parts of the paint then it'll end up looking weird when the other surrounding paint changes color but the protected paint doesn't.
So what you're saying is, wipe it on **all** the painted surfaces 🤔
And if you have a neighbor you do not like and he parks outside, you can leave him a message on his car by painting the UV protector on. 😁
Tape off around the light. Use wet sandpaper and make sure to keep the headlight and paper wet with water. Start with 800 or 1,000 depending on how bad the lights are. Then work up to 1500, then 2000, and up to 3000 while rinsing the light often. Then use a plastic scratch remover paste and buff the light. Finish with a protectant wax and polish.
one reason why i deeply love Tyler's content. is he just a normal guy. and isnt scared to show it.
keep being you
Also, headlight reveal after the cleaning! Thanks for all you do. I love that my kids can watch you. You crack us all up and I don’t have to worry about anything negative. Thanks!
i have used the 3M kits dozens and dozens of times while working at the dealership, the more time and work you put into them, the better they come out.
but i do hear some people saying that it doesn't last a couple of weeks before it goes back the same way it used to is it true?
@@khalilsubahi1310 I've used the Sylvania kit before based on results from Project Farm - It is a bit more time consuming, took me about an hour or so to do both headlights. I did the restoration on my headlights in May 2020, and the clouding is starting to creep in enough now that I'd consider doing it again. I live in the snowy Midwest with plenty of salt on the roads. Don't know if the salt or uv hurts the headlights faster.
All in all, they do work, and so long as they come with some form of sealant/uv protector they should last over a year rather than a few weeks.
@@khalilsubahi1310 Used the 3M kit on my 14 year old Volvo and the headlights are still clear after a year. I applied a ceramic coat to them when I had finished restoring them to hopefully keep them looking like new which so far appears to be working.
@@armchairgeneralissimo that sounds like a smart idea. did you just use a standard ceramic coat that you’d otherwise use on the rest of the painted surfaces of the car?

Hey Tyler! can we see more jar videos. 5 random items in jars filled with, DEF fluid, or, lava lamp fluid, or, whiskey. also i think it would be cool to watch you try to build an electric guitar out of random items you have laying around 😀
I've used a 3M kit which is excellent if a little pricey. There's another kit on the market with a clear coating you spread over the headlights to prevent them yellowing again. Can't remember who makes it though. You can also just buy various grades of sandpaper discs and backing pad for pennies. Then use a decent finishing polish
I have a box of that 3M headlight restoration kit laying around and was debating on using it, did it do as good as his best one did in the video??
@@Brandon-G-413 yeah i only bought it for a really bad set of old BMW X5 headlights. Worked very well
I've used the McGuire's long before this video and can tell you the results are exactly how you saw it. If you want to call it a downside based on my location in the Southeast US, it lasted about three months. I'm okay with that considering it's ease of use. Lasting time may very based on geographic location, I'd be interested to know if it's different in your area.
@@TheBlaert I'm going to use it tomorrow, thanks for the input
Excellent testing. That meguiars kit is really impressive. Thanks for trying them out.
The Chemical removes the top layer of oxidization. The sanding is to remove the additional compromised clearcoat off the headlight and to properly and evenly reseal or recoat with UV Protectant.. If you don't sand the light and make it all even, it could look strange or fail prematurely. Also, I would recommend sanding left to right, but you can go back and forth..just don't change direction.
Typically you want side to side wipes going left to right or right to left.. I recommend in to out , with 50% overlap. Generally, it self levels, hence the 1 direction. Side to side is best...never go top/down or down/up. I used Distilled water while sanding with 1000 / 2000 /3000 / 5000 grit sandpaper.
My restoration has lasted a few years now.

I know what one to buy now. Thanks. Keep making awesome videos. I still use my self stirring mug every day.
Great video, and very interesting regarding the toothpaste option. I think I’ll just stick with the restoration kits though. 👍👍👍
The Meguiar's works really well, but I would definitely buy the next step up kit from the two step kit. Especially if you have big headlights. Shit gets tiring doing it by hand. It comes with a scrub wheel that you can use with a drill. Also, you do have to occasionally redo it. The box says usually around once a year. It's definitely not a permanent solution, but for $20-5, you can reuse the same kit for many years.
I really appreciate all your efforts in your trials! I have purchased a couple of products from your recommendations 👍😁 keep it up!
Had a 96 Taurus that had foggy and yellowing headlights. Used toothpaste on them and it cleaned them up perfectly. Just had to redo it every few months but it was very cost effective.

I worked for a detail company in highschool and one of the things we had to do was water sand and buff the headlights in order to "restore" brown or foggy headlights, anyway one day a guy came by the car-lot we were working at and offered to do every car on the lot in 1 afternoon for half the price, he was using clear coat and a paint brush which would turn super cloudy in a few weeks and start chipping off, looked horrible and ofcourse they called wanting us to fix all the headlights they tried to cheapout on.
Did my headlights with 3m quick clear kit. Liked how it turned out. As soon as I was done Tyler posts this video, so I had to watch

Any headlight restoration should have a U/V protective clear coat sprayed on afterwards. You can buy it at any hardware store in a spraycan. Doesn’t need to be the second step stuff that came in the box. If you don’t use it. The headlights will be yellow again in no time at all.

Only permanent solution is to sand the headlights, and then spray 2k clear with UV protection :)
Thanks for the feedback Expect more videos soon Send a direct message I have something special for you🎁🎁
Just use 3000 grit sandpaper and windex. Then use a clear coat of your choice. I use Cerakote trim wipes. They cost about $2 each in a box of 8. Just be smart enough to have the final stage ready on both lights so you can use ONE wipe.
I typically go a step beyond just sanding, out of redundancy, and polish with a 3” pad on a drill with White Diamond metal polish, before applying the cerakote.
If you really want to go all out, swap out the Cerakote with a UV protect 2K clear coat paint. You will never have to deal with foggy yellow lights ever again.

The best kit I've ever used was the Turtle Wax kit. It comes with lubricant, 3 different grits of sandpaper, buffing compound, and the clear coat. It's time consuming, but you can't go wrong for $15 dollars.
I'd also like to add that it's important to fully clean them with dish detergent beforehand. If you don't then you'll be pushing oil and grime around.
I needed to see this haha. I have a kit for my headlights cause they're cloudy and bad. I'm hoping my kit is like the second one!
I need that spray haha 🤣
Also I have another car repair suggestion. They have paint pens for spots that are rusty and paint chipped on your car. Maybe you can try testing those!!
you can also Just buy 1 sheet of 1000 grit wet sandpaper and 1 bottle of UV Clearcoat spray for a fraction of the price and result will be identical, if not even better.

9:30 - I was literally thinking about how much I love that sound x3
I've used the kits before and had to redo them within 2 weeks to 6 months. Now I just use some metal polish and about 5 mins each, repeat every 2-3 months. Another thing I learned was to watch the silvering on the reflector, once that starts flaking off, all the cleaning/polishing isn't going to help other than cosmetically.

Really enjoying these car vids!
If you take a buffer using Maguiers Scratch X it will clean them up like new. While using the buffer DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE PRESSURE as you WILL burn the plastic. Go lightly and on low speed if your buffer has that option. (TIP) Never go in circles while hand buffing. Go from right to left as those types of scratches are easier to get out. This applies to both paint and headlights. You can also do the same thing to the tail lights as well. Just remember to use light pressure while using a buffer. Sometimes spraying a little water on the buffing pad or on the surface you cleaning will help as well. The water will prevent the surface from getting hot and and causing damage.
what i posted the plastic x i use all the time but i also use the toothpaste first then plastic x then i use a wax but if the head lights isnt yellow or kinda have a rough feeling to them then i dont use the toothpaste
I used the 3M one with the drill a few times. Works but be carful not to damage paint

Interesting video. The one time we had restore our headlights, we used WD40. Worked a treat and I really thought that was going to be one of the home remedies.
I've also heard you can get the stronger Off bug spray and the deet that is in it will work pretty well for a temporary fix!
@@Brandon-G-413 Interesting. That's not a product we get in the UK, but I'll keep an eye out for the Deet ingredient although I think it's banned here.
@@HubsByG makes sense, there are a lot of things we have over here in the US that are probably banned in your country, like all of our junk foods over here have different ingredients than your country would have, and honestly that scares me, because if the UK doesn't want those ingredients, then I wouldn't want them in our products either!!
@@Brandon-G-413 You're right, but we are heading your way. We've pretty much opened the door to genetically modified crops - which I don't like. As for ingredients, before the ban on artificial/lab made colours (sorry colors) and preservatives, I was affected from birth as they were in baby formula and everything. I was one of the first on a trial of eating no artificial Colors and preservatives and it was successful. Unfortunately my diet is bad and I have a ton of allergies as it was very difficult to find food to eat. Now I'm able, I'm allergic to what I couldn't eat before. But, we are accepting more and more of artificial things with US candy stores opening with imports and supermarkets now selling a small range of Mike n Ikes, Jolly Rancher which I must agree, have BAD ingredients and I couldn't eat anyway although I'd love to try. You do have wonderful baked beans - I love Bush's Country Style.
@@Brandon-G-413 This works but it literally melts the surface layer of the plastic and I think can possibly be more problematic if it gets on the paint.
If it has been said already sorry but Deep Woods off bug spray works pretty good, I have cleaned a few headlights with that and a fiber towel, you have to use a little more elbow grease but it did a good job.
Can never go wrong with dissolving the surface layer with some diethyltoluamide then buffing and sealing. Basically all the kits are anyways minus the solvent.
I've always been told the toothpaste then off spray maybe Tyler will apply some
they do sell just the spray separate for about $9-10, so if you have some 1500 grit wet/dry sandpaper at home or want to wing it with toothpaste, you can just spray afterwards. I would recommend wiping down with IPA/rubbing alcohol prior to applying the coating.

@@cazzey8569 I've used a kit you put multiple pads on a drill. It takes a lot of time, but works.
What's happening that causes the damage is your headlight comes with a coating that protects from UV rays, it breaks down over time. If you use these kits, you're definitely stripping down to straight plastic. You can help yourself buy more time of good clear headlights if you clearcoat.
Also, imo, removing the headlight from the car makes the entire job a lot easier.
