    Great informative review as always. Its nice to have a review on this new version. Existing reviews would cover the 9218 version that is no longer available, since Hiby finally ran out of those chips. (every other manufacturer stopped using that chip over a year ago because it was discontinued, but I guess Hiby had a large stock lol)
    A couple notes:
    -FC4 is actually a full decoder, you could store MQA local files and use any non-mqa enabled player, such as neutron or foobar on windows, and FC4 will fully unfold them. (exclusive mode is required though)
    -When using UAPP for mqa playback (local files or streaming), it is preferred to enable the MQA passthrough option. This will automatically detect whether you are using a renderer, full decoder or non-mqa enabled dac. It will disable software decoding whenever you are using a full decoder. (and you will see green or blue indicator, not magenta)
    I´m not a big fan of the MQA sound, but I think this could be valuable for those who care. And Happy New Year!

    Greetings, a question.
    with the JCally AP90 you said that it was "balanced, with a very organic timbre. fluid and almost analog. (I mean, a perfect Dac for me) in this one you said the same thing but without saying that it is "fluid and almost analog".
    Does that mean that the AP90 in terms of sound is better?
    if we talk about pure sound quality... in terms of balanced sound... what do you think is the best for less than 100 dollars of all the 4 and a half stars?

    • @donglemadness
      @donglemadness  Год назад +2

      Not necessarily better. I understand the perspective of sound preferences. Both AP90 and FC4 being well balanced and neutral, what really separate them is the energy and dynamics presentation of which AP90 is actually harder edged than FC4. Based on the way you describe your preference, then I would say that FC4 would suit you better or even Tanchjim Space

    hello Andy, using dongle DACs from the phone how much of a listed power output do I get from them compare to the usb from the PC? I definitely hear smaller soundstage but less artificially crips/bright and cleaner sound from the phone compare to the PC usb with a stock/generic usb cable, I dont hear difference in macro and micro dynamics though. Do I lose mW, current, voltage of the output or not? Can dongle DAC achieve those numbers only with enough power supply from the USB? Or does the power from the usb affect something else? Can I say, the weaker the listed dac output the more similar specs I get? (phone vs PC).

    • @donglemadness
      @donglemadness  Год назад +2

      It depends on which USB class you are referring to. For Android devices, that runs on true USB 3.0 900mA power, phones like Samsung Galaxy S20 or Sony Xperia 1 iV or Xperia 1 iii (be wary that many phones listed as USB 3.0 but still running USB 2.0 PD), then the said phones will perform equal to laptops that uses the same USB tech. On a condition that you connect your dongle to the phones and use USB Exclusive mode, that is to bypass Android SRC (power throttling) and get Bitperfect too. Most USB 2.0 (250 mA) will still work fine, but of course as you would say it, sometimes they do sound a bit weaker when compared to desktop setup. The scaling factors, the higher the Vrms/mW a dongle is rated, then natively they will perform better with stronger USB power, but not so much for weaker spec dongles especially the ones with 1 Vrms limit

    Hi Andy, Could you please help me to understand what is measuement criteria for dac amp power?
    Vrms or mw ?
    Hiby FC4 output power : 340mw @ 32ohm & 3.3 Vrms
    Tanchjim Space output power : 230mW @32 ohm & 4 Vrms
    which is more powerful?

    • @donglemadness
      @donglemadness  Год назад +1

      Both are applicable. Vrns is the absolute max number for voltage of the output, mW is the effective highest Watt within that voltage range, on measurement alone, FC4 is the more powerful unit with the most efficient wattage delivery despite Space having more voltage. However it also depends, some headphones especially the ones with very high impedance rating will work better with outright higher voltage especially if they have high sensitivity (high impedance, high sensitivity rating).High mW on the other hand works better for Magnetic Planars (for example) especially those that typically runs on Low Impedance, Low sensitivity

    • @d0nj03
      @d0nj03 Год назад

      In this case both are telling you the same thing. Power = Voltage squared divided by impedance, so 0.340 Watts = (3.3*3.3 V) / 32 ohms.
      It's usually more useful if they tell us how an amp will perform both for high and for low impedances. For low impedance they will normally tell us the power in mW into 16 or 32 ohms, while for high impedances they will say either the power or voltage over 300 or 600 ohms, since the main limitation at high ohms is the ability for high voltage (while at low ohms the limitation is how high the current in mA can be before the device burns up).
      But since dongles aren't really made for driving 300+ ohm studio headphones they can just as well skip that part and provide only values for 32 ohms etc. (Though I still wish they provided more values like for 8 ohms for example, because Verum 1 planar magnetics also exist.)

    As one of my favorite YT audio reviewer I would like to hear your opinion about which dongle sounds better between Hiby fc4 and Xduoo link 2 bal. I intend to use one of these (depending on your opinion) as a secondary dac/amp mainly for Sennheiser ie100PRO and Sennheiser ie 600. Btw my primary dongle dac/amp is questyle m15 which is magnificent sounding dac/amp especially in 4.4 but even in SE 3.5 it can run Neumann ndh20 and Sennheiser hd650 at decent levels, I have ordered balanced cables for both OTE so will see if M15 make them sound even better in balanced mode.
    But for now I would appreciate your opinion about Hiby FC4 vs Xduoo link 2 bal (probably new max version since they are same price for now) sound quality wise.
    Thank you very much and keep doing great and real life commissions.

    • @donglemadness
      @donglemadness  Год назад +1

      With M15 already in your hand, not FC4 nor Link2 BAL can really match it in terms of sheers sonic quality and performances technically - that's the fact. But we are talking about three already great dongles and the margin of differences are paper thin at best (at this level, the rule of diminishing returns applies). Perhaps what Link2 BAL can offer better is slightly more power at 4 Vrms region and a not forgetting the wide open soundstage that will make even M15 felt narrower. FC4 on the other hand, is pretty much plying on similar path to M15 sound wise, maybe it has a tiny bit of dynamic energy to it (again due to more power at 4 Vrms). But if you ask me, consider trying a slightly different sound presentation from the likes of iBasso DC03Pro (a bit colored but freakingly fun), or HiBy FC6, for that amazing analogue sound that is creamy smooth yet still neutral and natural. I hope I am not making it even more confusing to you, cheers.

      @@donglemadness thank you, and no, quite opposite it’s not confusing :)
      So if I want similar sound signature (bit lower grade of course) than FC4 if I want bit different than Xduoo link 2 bal (soundstage wise).
      Concerning your review of Hiby FC6 I’m pretty sure that that is one of the best on the market but can’t see point purchasing same class dac/amp as M15 as secondary dac/amp and limit myself to SE3.5 (concerning using almost every single iem/OTE headphone via balanced cables. On top of it limiting myself to pretty low power output (because of it limiting myself to use it only for IEM). IMHO Hiby miss opportunity with fc6 to deliver “the perfect dongle dac/amp” sacrificing 4.4 bal and at least doubling the power if not tripling for few dollars more which is negligible considering the 300+ usd price tag.
      I was also considering ibasso 03Pro watching your review but I found lot of complaints on net about low quality (loosely) usb c connector same goes for new ibasso 04PRO.
      Thank you again.
      It will probably be FC4 since I’m in love with M15 especially in combination with Sennheiser ie600 it is definitely end game paring, for me at least :)

      @@donglemadness Hi Andy, I have purchased Hiby FC4 and Xduoo link 2 bal max (new model). I disappointed by Xduoo cause they send me defective product (problems with connectors both 3.5, 4.4 jacks and usb C so I ask seller to refund me money) you have to push both sides one towards another to hear the sound and if not than there is no sound or very bad static sound (noise). But anyway (holding both sides on Xduoo I manage to listen couple of dozen songs and compare to FC4). For me FC4 has much better sound (to be honest maybe because Xduoo is defective vise not just because connectors but in general) but the sound coming from FC4 is amazing!!! and then I compared to my Questyle M15 and you are completely right, there is no more than 10% difference in sound if that. you can only feel that difference when using expensive IEM (like ie600) and Headphones (Neumann NDH20) but with cheaper (ie100pro) there is almost no difference especially in SE jack.
      So the only thing I disagree with you is that this DAC is 4 1/2* this DAC is easy 5* DAC considering performance and price (usualy 70-100 usd) and is a steal for that money. If I don't know the price of FC4 and make A-B comparison with M15 I would probably pay 200 usd for FC4 it is really that good IMO. no doubt M15 is better DAC but is maybe 40-50 usd better and not 150usd better for sure.

      @@surdzo Sorry to hear about that issue with xDuoo. Hopefully you will get it refunded properly. And thanks for sharing your feedbacks on the FC4. For the record, I would still recommend FC4 for anyone looking for transparent Hi-Fi sort of output especially if budget is a concern. But ultimately, the reason M15 is a 5 Star rated dongle it was because of that tiny refinement it offers. As I always reminded many that I talked to, in audio world, the higher tier we go, we are paying a fortune for marginal improvements which could translate into 3-5% at most - this rule of diminishing returns is real

    • @surdzo

      @@donglemadness agree with you. In my opinion for IEM and HP under 300-400 usd people should not have to spend more than 100usd for dongle dac/amp. If they consider purchasing more expensive IEM/HP than ok they can consider about something cost 250-300 usd. After that difference in sound quality is less than 1% at every 100 usd increments in price so not worth. In my opinion midrange priced dac 140-190 is the worst option at what I have heard so far, ok there are some exceptions but in general that is the rule.
      Next I will order iBasso 04PRO and decide what to keep out of two (FC4 or 04PRO) and at the end maybe both :)

      As far as i can understand, the mW rating is always viewed as per channel. So 340 mW is 340 mW, not 680 mW as total. mW is basically the wattage rating for the amplification power of the output, which can be anything from 2 to 5 or higher VRMS (voltage), see this as the correlation between Horsepower and Torque, Horsepower is the absolute volume of power and Torque as the leverage of the voltage

    • @donglemadness
      @donglemadness  Год назад +1

      @@skyhero1888 The cable being cable does not have it's own power. The wattage and voltage is always from the sources. The rating you see on cables are just an indication how much they can handle optimally. So power is only when you turn on the sources. mW and VRMS is always different from one device to another based on how they are built, so louder volume does not automatically determine higher mW, all can be quite different from one device to another
