Do you even know who a goddess is? To be a goddess you do not need to be a skilled singer. Anyway, the reason I called her overrated bcos of her personality which has been portrayed as beyond human capabilities and some sort of reincarnation of a special entity. I guess, you do not know the history of Lata Mangeshkar's life. TBH, I'm not judging her but proclaiming her as a goddess despite knowing her history is blind worship.
Now let me be more honest with u. I really don't like her voice. I find it irritatingly high pitched. For me the best female voice I have ever heard of a singer would be of Shreya Ghosal. At the same time she is more versatile than Lata Mangeshkar and know one thing Ghosal is a much, much better person compared to her. U know what's praise worthy? A humble person with great skill is praise worthy.
Let me enlighten you about something. How did you, we or entire India develop a notion of LM as a goddess? It's bcos TV show hosts & Bollywood celebs introduce her as some sort of heavenly entity. It has been inculcated in our mind by them to consider her as such.

I'm her die-hard fan since my student life specially during college life. Just as a die-hard fan of Lata Mangeshkar and collector of her songs I was very famous in my Bengal Engineering College Shibpur (now IIEST) campus & hostels (1987-91). She is my Goddess. My dream is still unfulfilled to meet her and bow down my head on her foot and take her blessings. I attended one of her live program in Salt lake stadium kolkata in 1989 and I've preserved that ticket still now.
Today the world has lost an Angel that has touched more than 3 generations.................. but left us with the voice/songs that can comfort us all........ RIP 😔🙏

Just hear the pronunciation of Urdu....ACCURATE... evrytime, everywhere in all songs.... PERFECT and she is Marathi.... New age singers must learn this thing.... now a days no singer bothers about the pronunciation.... all they bother about SUR all the time and only show off their mastery on classical music. Thats ok but by only knowing all the raags and right notes no body can become RAFI or LATA..... Singing is different and Playback Singing is totally different. Simple outside but extra ordinary inside. Even during eighties, she used to say her Music director or fellow artist ( Manna Dey narrated once) that " क्या मैं ने ठीक से गाया?" What an unbelievable humility of such a great singer. Her appearance always exudes this humbleness which was with her till her last breath. The likes of her we may not see again. We are proud that we also lived with her. Coming generation would listen hers songs with silent amazement.

In Lata’s own words: This song brings back a memory. In the film (Junglee), this song was first sung by Rafisaab and it was picturized on Shammi Kapoor. Then the director felt that the same song should also be picturized on the heroine Saira Banu. So they picturized her song sequence using the same song sung by Rafisaab. It was only later that I was called by Jaikishanji to sing the female version. I first protested because the song was originally composed for Rafi saab’s pitch, which was way too high for me, especially the antara (stanza) notes were too high. But Jaikishanji told me to give it a try and while looking at the filmed song, I sang it. (In this recording Lata is singing at a lower scale, which suits her. In the film recording she also changed her style to suit Saira Bano)

She is singing in a different key in this video "Nai Zindagi Naya Jeevan", BBC 1, 1979, than the key she sang the song for the movie 'Junglee' itself. But it sounds the best on the yt channel, (in comparison to other singers who have sung this song and have put it on yt channel), because, first thing it is her song made specially for her (Lata ji) the second thing is she has all the attributes that one needs to sing this song. It has all the emotions and the right indian emotions coming out from her mind, heart and lungs. It just sounds terrific, although others have tried to sing they sang good but they are lacking the musical touch and the right emotions. I would still give an A+ to Lata Mangeshkar ji for this song. Nobody can beat her on this song at least.

Right from beginning I always have the the feeling that Rafi's version of this song is much superior both in terms of singing and expressions . Thanks to you, now I came to know why is it. You can feel the difference , just listen to the line "tumw mujhko hasna sikhaya rone kahoge to ro lenge" from both the versions you will find the difference in the expression and singing (pitch) .
