I'd just recently moved from Birmingham to Cambridge, and one morning, out on a stroll, I heard what I thought was a peculiar wood pigeon call. Spent a good while trying to learn about bird calls, a subject I'm not too familiar with, and found this video, excellent stuff! Maybe Collared Dove's weren't very common where I lived before, but I can now certainly say that there's a bunch in the park near my house, and here I thought the pigeons in Cambridge might just be musically shy! Turns out I was listening to a different bird entirely! Anyway, love the explanation of the difference in rhythm, thanks so much for the video, really helpful stuff!
We always remember them as “ coll- ared dove” and “ big fat pi-goen” they literally announce who they are! Love these videos and have learned a lot, thank you!😊
My friends were in the pub explaining that some stupid bird was waking her up every morning at 5am so I explained which birds they are using these techniques, and they all thought it was the funniest thing ever. Now our WhatsApp group is full of voice notes of friends trying to get the wood pigeon-pigeon and Collard Dove calls correct. Makes getting woke up by these things every morning a little less annoying. Thank you.
I've heard a few mnemonics for these two but I think yours are more memorable! I think this will be the first year that I can really distinguish them. It's not as difficult as I always thought it was.
i had a wood pigeon recently that used an extra syllable Lucy - saying "Wood piiiiigeon, por fav-or", pretending he was a polite wood pigeon speaking spanish
I always say that wood pigeons sound similar to collared doves except they're smokers lol! They have this raucous sound while collared doves have a purer tone if that makes sense.
In our house, we have always known Wood Pigeons' song because it sounds like the whistling bit from Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay. This is impossible to unhear and I'm sorry.
The reason why wood pigeons they dont finish their song can happen, firstly is if they are interupted and the second one where they just stop purposely
1:06 the sound effect and intense stare! 😂“they don’t look like they’re quite all there” 😂
I can impersonate a Wood Pigeons call very accurate by inhaling while i do the sound. It is such fun when they answer back!

These videos are innovative, incredibly helpful and really well made. Please keep it up.
I love this!!! The pigeon 'hi' is spot on 😆
Collared Dove is a Man Utd fan
"Uniiiiited, Uniiiiited"
Brilliant! I hear both of those a lot where I live, and now I can tell the difference!
Wood pigeon: "my arse hurts...damn twigs". 🥰
I have several collared dove around my place. Great video!
Love these! Waiting for the next one now. Thanks!
“They’re not quite there” - the amount of times we described the poor wood pigeons as that is countless 😂🤣
Another great presentation. Thanks 🙂

Not come across this way of remembering these two species before but really good ways.
You are amazing
I like to think collared doves are like football fans and they’re chanting “U-nii-ted U-nii-ted” 🤣
Love it! For 🇳🇱 people across the pond, I'd translate your interpretations as "Houtduiiif hier! HOUTDUIF!" and "Tortel-duif!"
I always think the wood pigeons are saying "Your door bell's broken". We have many Percy's visit our garden 🖤
My grandson, Joshua, and I enjoy listening to Woodpigeons saying "I know I'm boring" 🤣😄

Brilliant!
Will collar necked doves fly upon your or stay well away from you?
I’m pretty sure that all the Wood-pigeon songs that I have heard are three repeats of the long phrase followed by a single Coo! Keep up the good work.
The mnemonics I've heard are "Take two Paul, take two" for the wood pigeon and "Do you coo? Do you coo?" for the collared dove.
For the wood pigeon my boys and I like the one mentioned on Springwatch last year (?) “I know I’m boring”
I always think the wood pigeon is saying "we want sausages"

I have always thought that woodpidgeons are boasting about where the went on their holidays !

Wood Pigeon - 'I won't, go to school'
Collared Dove - United United
The Collared Dove makes the same chanting call as Manchester United football fans, "UNITED! UNITED! UNITED!"
Wood Pigeon = "My toe hurts Betty"
The wood pigeon one is "my burger tastes good, my burger tastes good"
Now I know, ty
Wood Pigeon = close to a Bo Diddley beat. The Dove is kind of a 6/8 Waltz
Wood Pigeon: For 🇨🇭 people "Iss Suurchrut, Ruedi"
I thought the wood pigeon said "my toe keeps hurting, my leg keeps hurting, my wing keeps hurting, my beak keeps hurting..."
I'm just gonna say it. I've always thought wood pigeon calls sound stupid.
Steal too cows taffy - Wpigeon
U ni Ted, u ni Ted - C.Dove
Is that bird-brain?
