I was only 16 and betted desert orchid this day,i knew nothing about racing and was in the pub and just thought it looked great. One of the first winners i ever bet and went onto to bet on it many times.
It is hard to believe now that Dessie was available at that price, but he was the outsider of the stables two runners. I backed the other one Coomes Ditch who Colin Brown preferred to Dessie.
Remember this race well. Sadly backed Forgive 'N' Forget. The funny thing was quite a few people I knew backed Desert Orchid this day. 16/1 was amazing odds.
think this is 1 day forgive n forget will wanna do the latter----the top chaser in the land-thrashed-by dessies energetic jumps---chk out the 2nd last---anyone know dessies price-am sure dessie ran in 2 miler at festival-why?????-----does anyone know what sp orchid was has to be 10-1 plus????
He was kept mainly to 2 miles as he simply had so much speed very few thought he would stay 3 miles and if the Tingle Creek and Victor Chandler were not the piss easy races they are for the top horses today he would have won 4 or 5 of both them too something Kauto could never have done
All quality horses behind him....no blown up handicappers or horses out of their depth as in recent years.
Quite brilliant and racing would never be the same again
The best ever nothing compares before or since 💛
Kauto star

A shock winner at the time but a sign of things to come.

lord john oaksey, R.I.P. congrats for coneygree for the gold cup.. well done to connections
A fellow coneygree fan what a horse he should of been
He was 16s as many didn't think he'd stay apart from his trainer & his fans. He was already building up a bit of a fan club.
I'm thinking this would have been dessies 1st time trying 3 miles ? going someway to explaining the rather generous odds on the day
Can't quite recall if it was 1st attempt at 3 miles, but he was definitely still a novice when he won this, hence the big odds.

Legend that's all

Ended up at 16/1 I had also backed him earlier at 20/1

The SP was 16/1, he was still a novice when he won this race.
Eddie Cr 2 miles to 3 miles 5 furlong all came the same to Dessie
This was his 2nd season as a chaser and first attempt at 3m against the big players
