Yo this is crazy I JUST wrote an essay analyzing Ted Kennedy's Chappaquiddick speech?? I wrote about his use of pathos in the speech when subtly reminds Americans about the Kennedy curse to distract them from the fact that the death of Mary Joe was on his hands. Reminding Americans of the Kennedy's tragic past makes it seem almost inappropriate to comment on his recklessness.

I was telling this story to a younger person not long ago, I was stunned to find out these stories are forgotten. Thank you for bringing this to light for people that may not know. I was 9 years old. My family was living in New York at the time but we were from Massachusetts and were spending a couple weeks there when Ted Kennedy killed Mary Jo. This story was the focus of every conversation among the adults. My parents and all my relatives were furious at Ted’s despicable behavior and the corrupt officials who protected him. Everyone in any position of authority in Massachusetts was afraid of the Kennedy family, who already had a long history of killing anyone who was inconvenient to them. And the neck brace! Ted looked like a loser and no one thought he was hurt. It was a total joke!

Also to the people in the comments that talk about the name Chappaquiddick being weird or funny, yup lol we're a state that holds a lot of native american names for towns and such. Massachusetts itself is named after the Massachusett tribe so. There ya go.

It's been said that the Kennedy family is American royalty, and they're definitely as interesting as the old European monarchs. Just like the Tudors, stories of the Kennedy family drama are better than fiction - full of mystery, passion, villains and tragic heroes.
My parents remember this event (and the assassinations of JFK and RFK), so I've been fascinated since hearing them mention it during my childhood. My dad does a great impression of Ted Kennedy saying "Mary Joe was still in the car." I don't know why that stuck with him all these years, but somehow he manages to make it funny, despite it being such a terribly sad incident, but I guess it's because he's making fun of Ted Kennedy's manner of talking. I admit, it's a dark sort of humour. And maybe it's one of those "you had to be there" sort of things. I always got the impression that he, and others who remember, assume T.K. was hiding something.
I don't think T.K. was necessarily a bad guy, but he wasn't the brave hero, fighting for truth, justice and peace, the way Bobby was. It's possible that he got cut some slack in general, considering the tragic loss of his brothers, who were so highly regarded. That said, I've always heard that Chappaquiddick was exactly the thing that cost him any real shot at the presidency. Most people wouldn't consider that to be a relatable punishment, but I'm sure the whole scandal weighed heavily on him over the years. Is that enough? Is anything ever enough? Once someone is lost, and there's a sense that they could've been saved if someone had made better choices, that someone can never make up for that loss. It's definitely an injustice to her family and memory, however, if the truth died with T.K.. It's a wretched thing to do: to cover up the truth of what happened, just to protect a political career. Ironically, he may have been forgiven, if he'd been completely honest instead, because the dishonesty is deliberately selfish in a way that lasts much longer than some regretable decisions made in the past. So now he can never be fully redeemed, and we may never know what really happened. What could have been so terrible, that the scandal of a half-assed cover-up was better than the scandal of the truth?

Most people who were around during that era believe it was likely Mary Jo was pregnant. The autopsy clearly would have revealed that, and has always been viewed as the likeliest reason one wasn't performed. Surrised you didn't mention that at all, it was all over the place back then - a newspaper report even came out stating it as "fact" and Kennedy refuted it pubicly. (In a completely offhand way, of course.) Also, that area is quite rural and off the beaten path, was especially so then. He could indeed have fairly easily walked some distance from the scene without being seen - the fire station in that area is, or was then, likely colunary, hence not staffed at all times. Most small New England towns are that way. Lastly, my own theory has always been that she was pregnant, no one could find out, Ted did her in or at least drugged her (which they also would have found in the autopsy), put her in the driver's seat, and put her foot on the accelerator. :(

I think you should really look into this “suicide” that happened last year in my home town of laurel, Ms. The girl that died was Katherine Sinclair. It honestly should be a movie because the things that happened are so ridiculous. Here’s a brief description - Katherine was a 22 year old who had just been accepted to nursing school, had her whole life in front of her. But she was secretly dating a super rich older guy, a few of her close friends knew about it. The night she died at her boyfriends house she was found with a gun shot wound to her right temple. She was left handed. And they said it was suicide of course, but they found bloody keys on the kitchen counter. After the police came and got her body. There was no investigation and they told him to clean it all up.
His trial is this summer... there are SO SO SO many more details to this story. I really hope you investigate it and if you want to know more feel free to message me. I think her story should be heard. And the “head” people in my hometown need to be put away.

my grandma grew up as close family friends to the Kennedy family, and most stories regarding them she has been very open about, but anytime she’s been asked about this or any other shortcomings within their family she completely shuts it down, and changes the subject. Like my incredibly soft spoken and generally relaxed grandmother completely flipped out at my cousin and I for insinuating any sort of foul play with this case. It’s still strange to me.

Sadly, there are so many conspiracy theories about the Chappaquiddick case because nobody ever heard the truth. Too much cover up and damage control right from the beginning. Supposedly there were threats made to anyone who may have known anything. Had Mary Jo had an autopsy, had Ted been charged with no plea bargain, it would have been a different story. Had this been brought to court, he would have been forced to answer the questions that will forever be a mystery. When all else failed, he used the convenient answer that he "didn't recall". Your Grandma was a devoted friend but there was too much covered up that I don't think anyone will ever understand. She may not know any more than the rest of the American public know.

So according to some theories the driver's side window was down and that's how Ted got out, if she was able to stand up and keep in an air bubble then she would've been able to get out too because obviously it wasn't a seatbelt malfunction if she could stand. In the pictures some of them the window is open and some it is closed. Even if the window had been closed at the time Windows were not electronic so she should have been able to use the crank to get it open especially in shallow water. I believe she was dead before the car ever went in the water.

As much as I despise Ted, I believe he was set up. First note that E Howard Hunt & Frank Sturgis "just happened" to be on Chappaquiddick at the time!
The car did not fall off the bridge as depicted in the film at 3:02; it hit the water & flipped over forward. To do so it had to be going over 40 mph. Damage to the side mirror indicates the steering wheel to have been tied in place.
The diver reported seeing blood on Mary Jo's blouse.
Oddly enough, while Mary Jo did not have her purse with her, one of the other girl's purses was in the car.
Whatever they framed Ted with it had to be worse than the silly story he told: he was probably framed with murder.
