The same thing used to happen with my mom and my grandmother. My mom came here from Portugal at 16 and became a citizen. This was back in the '70's when immigration from Puerto Rico was huge and there was a lot of racial tension and hatred. No one could tell my mother was an immigrant, she looks like everyone else, but as soon as she started talking and they heard that accent, "GO BACK WHERE YOU CAME FROM!" I would explain the difference between Portugal and Puerto Rico, I would tell them she was a citizen, I would tell them that even if she was from Puerto Rico, which she was not, it didn't matter because Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory and they are legally part of our country. The same thing used to happen with my mom and my grandmother. My mom came here from Portugal at 16 and became a citizen. This was back in the '70's when immigration from Puerto Rico was huge and there was a lot of racial tension and hatred. No one could tell my mother was an immigrant, she looks like everyone else, but as soon as she started talking and they heard that accent, "GO BACK WHERE YOU CAME FROM!" I would explain the difference between Portugal and Puerto Rico, I would tell them she was a citizen, I would tell them that even if she was from Puerto Rico, which she was not, it didn't matter because Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory and they are legally part of our country. Didn't matter, they would just stand there and keep screaming racial slurs while a 10 year old is trying to defend a 60 year old grandmother with kidney failure. Ignorance, willful stupidity, racism, and bad behavior have always been here. No matter how hard we try to get rid of it, it's always here. It's discouraging.
