  • AOA, MY TGJ FAMILY! 😊🌱
Welcome back to The Grammar Junction with Faisal Iqbal!
In today's video, I’ve discussed Unit 6: “The Darkling Thrush” (English Compulsory, HSSC I, National Book Foundation) in detail. This poem, written by Thomas Hardy, delves into themes of desolation and hope, portraying a vivid contrast between the bleakness of winter and the unexpected optimism of a singing thrush. I have translated and explained the poem in detail to help students fully understand the text and effectively answer SLO-Based Questions.
    SUMMARY OF THE POEM:
This unit features the poem "The Darkling Thrush," which encapsulates the somber mood of a frosty winter landscape while highlighting a glimmer of hope through the song of a thrush. Hardy uses rich imagery and symbolism to convey the sense of despair that pervades the scene, only to be uplifted by the unexpected joy of the bird's song. This poem encourages students to recognize the coexistence of sorrow and hope in life.
    ABOUT THE WRITER:
Thomas Hardy was an esteemed English novelist and poet, renowned for his works such as "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" and "Far from the Madding Crowd." Hardy's poetry often reflects his profound observations of life’s melancholy and beauty, blending realism with lyricism. "The Darkling Thrush" exemplifies his ability to evoke deep emotions through vivid and poignant language.

      Stanza 1:
      - Describes a bleak, wintry landscape.
      - Symbolizes the end of the old century.
      - Emphasizes themes of decay, desolation, and despair.
      Stanza 2:
      - Further explores the sense of hopelessness.
      - The landscape is personified as lifeless and ghostly.
      - Themes of death and the loss of vitality are highlighted.
      Stanza 3:
      - Introduction of a thrush's song, contrasting with the bleak surroundings.
      - The bird’s song brings a sense of unexpected joy and hope.
      - Theme of hope emerging from despair.
      Stanza 4:
      - The poet reflects on the thrush’s song.
      - Despite the surrounding gloom, the thrush is full of hope.
      - Theme of finding hope and optimism in the most unlikely circumstances.

OXYMORON is صنعتِ تضاد in Urdu if you’re familiar with it.
By definition, it is a figure of speech that combines contradictory (opposite) words for effect.
Examples include "Original Copy", “Innocent Devil”, “Talkative Introvert”, and "Loud Silence."
      Got it???
