ABOUT VIDEO:
Hey Afrodisiacs! In today's video I decided to test the pH of some of my favorite Natural hair products that I love to use on my High Porosity Hair. With formulas changing, I wanted to see whether the products I'm using are healthy for my hair or not. According to online sources, the idea pH for hair is 4.5-5.5. However, I read a different source that stated 3.5-5.5 is also acceptable. Moving forward, I'm going to test the pH of the products that I'm using to see if its at least within the ideal range. I hope this was helpful. Please like, comment, SHARE & SUBSCRIBE!
*Not sponsored. I purchased these products with my own money.

Hey Afrodisiacs! I've missed you guys so much. I hope everyone is doing well. 😘I also wanted to mention that this video was inspired by an Afrodisiac, Jennifer, who reached out to me about pH test trips. I decided to buy some & get to testing my products! If anyone has a chemistry background, I'd love to hear about thoughts about using hair products that have a pH of 3-3.5. 🤔Thumbs up for more vids like this!
It’s been awhile sis, glad to be here again 😘
@@amaadu568 Missed you sis!!! So glad you're tuning in. ❤️
I find that pH range to work well for keeping my cuticles smoothed. Only issue is that most products aren't formulated in that range for natural hair.
Not surprised that Mane Choice didn’t measure up...so glad that Camille Rose is a great go to❤️
Same there products never worked for me. They weren’t acidic enough, cuticle smoothing enough.
I already knew CRN would be good to go! 😍 I was surprised about TMC though. I should really test the pH of their other products to see if its the same thing.
@@PreppyFay12 If that shampoo really is a 3, that's super acidic. Let me finish the video 'cause maybe you had a reason for saying what you did.
Omg thank you for this video. I literally go to your videos before I buy any products. It is so hard to find high porosity fine hair youtube influencers
Ladosha Wrigjt has excellent information on hair. I learned to use the comb again with ease
FYI: TMC Cheers shampoo contains hops which is a key component of beer’s aroma and flavor and the proteins in beer comes from barley (barley extracts) 😉Thanks for the informative video.
Thank you for the information
Yes, keep this up!!!
Thank you!!! 😊
I love the different type of videos u out ❣️❣️
Thank you!! I'm really happy to hear that!
AK, Thank you 🌻 so many of our favorites are within PH!! Such great news ❤️ Great news ❤️
Yes they are!!! That was wonderful news! 🌻
great video idea! love your channel.
Thank you so much! ❤️
Heyyyyy Khadijah 👋🏽 Great video!
I tried out that CR Fresh Curls.... my hair loves it! It brought life to my coils! I have to buy more 💕
Such a cool video idea!!!
Glad you liked it!!
I agree they need to understand when they change the ingredients it can affect us and that we in a HEALTHY HAIR journey not just long hair.
So I will buy the strips especially when I'm doing clay mask.
Yes, agreed!!! I'm going to be testing the pH of my products a lot more. It was really eye opening to me. Not sure what I'm going to do about the products that weren't within the ideal range just yet.
Happy Sunday khadijah.. looking beautiful today ❤❤
Thank you Denesha! Happy Sunday to you as well 😊
Great video! You have helped my fine high porosity hair so much ❤️
I'm so glad I could help Sally! That's what I'm here to do. ❤️
Beautiful...love the hair, love the earrings, love your content 💕
Thank you so much 🤗
I also test the PH in my products. Great video!!!
Love it Sonya! It's taking that extra mile to make sure that prods are suitable for the hair. Nothing wrong with that!! 😄
Great video!
You look beautiful!! Thank you for sharing this video. I'm also high porosity. Great info. I'm going to buy one. 👍🏽😊😊🌸🌺💕
You are so welcome beautiful!!! 💕🌸🌺
Yes I loved and enjoyed this particular video. I would love to see more videos like this. Where can I purchase the ph chart and strips. Thanks again for this video. Love yiur popping updo 👍🏾😍
Will do Elaine! ☺️ I purchased my pH strips from Amazon. It came with the chart & the strips. Here is the link! amzn.to/3cXzm6e
Thank you for all the info on the ph levels, this really helped. It sure would be nice if the manufacturer would list the ph levels on the products.
Hey afro k I miss you!!
Great. Fun video. Love the hair. 😃
Thank you J!!! 🤗
love you!
Love you too! ❤️
Hey AK 😊😊🥰
Hey Cherry!!! 😄😄😄
This was very interesting!
So glad you thought so Jasmine! I loved doing this experiment, very fun! lol
@@AfroKhadisiac It made me wanna test out the ph of my products too haha, it’s so important! Especially for sensitive high po hair 😬😬
For the mane choice item is had hops in the ingredients. Hope are used to make beer but are very beneficial to our hairs strength
I think you should test on new products versus products you've been using for awhile. It's possible they could be altered in some way.
That's a great point Cawan. I think the products in the bottles are pretty safe, but I could see how the pH could possibly be altered with products in jars since we're using our hands to grab the product, etc. What I've actually started doing is testing the pH of new products that I buy. So, whenever I do a demo or review, the pH mentioned will be prior to using.
I love those earrings!!! Where can I purchase?
Hey! Thanks so much. I actually shared a website where I buy a lot of my earrings from in my latest video. The website is kargofresh.com/products/wooden-dreamcoat-earrings?_pos=1&_psq=drea&_ss=e&_v=1.0
To your beer question the “hops extract” and Laurdimonium Hydroxyproyl Hydrolyzed Barley Protein are the beer ingredients as these ingredients are used in the beer making process. Barley and Hops.
Ahh thank you so much Fay!!! 😊 Hmm, I just looked up the pH of Barley protein and Hops extract. They're both within the ideal pH range. Kinda confused as to why the shampoo was like a 3.
@@AfroKhadisiac I’m actually curious does this shampoo feel like a Cowash? Usually the shampoo should be slightly basic (or alkaline) because the purpose is for it to slightly lift the cuticle to allow the hair to be cleansed by the cleansing agents in the product. I’m concerned it’s so acidic it might not be cleansing enough wasn’t sure what your experience with it has been.
@@PreppyFay12 Great point Fay! What you said makes a lot of sense. Actually, I find this shampoo to be very cleansing. It removes a lot of buildup from my hair/scalp, without stripping. The shampoo almost has a clarifying look to it. I’m concerned about the pH as well. I’ve been noticing a little more dryness than usual. I automatically thought it’s because of the colder weather. I’m wondering if the shampoo has something to do with it. Now that the weather is warming up, it will be interesting to see how my hair acts. Definitely going to keep a close watch on this!
@@AfroKhadisiac Yeah I actually have a whole other theory as well. Have you ever heard of iamblackgirlcurls? One of the things I learned from them and even started doing before learning from them was choosing the right shampoo for the occasion. I have categorized my shampoos and use the one most appropriate to whatever my hair needs at that particular wash day. I have a clarifying one I only use if my hair has heavy butters or oils or plastics (silicones) although that’s a whole another story because I’ve been following them and doing the #30dayhairdetox. Since starting the detox I’ve only used it once and likely won’t have to use it for 8 weeks or more. I have an All-purpose shampoo that’s not clarifying but not all together moisturizing. I have a moisturizing shampoo I use twice if my hair is not that dirty or I don’t have a lot of build up or as a second cleanser after and all purpose shampoo( I always double cleanse) And I’m looking to getting a cleansing conditioner with actual cleansers in it (Curl Junkie Daily Fix- hopefully they have an Easter Sale) because I work out now and I clean my hair every 4-5 days so I need a gentler cleanser between shampoos so I don’t over cleanse my hair. I also have fine strands and high porosity and medium density like you. I’m not sure because I don’t know what you do but it might be that your over cleansing and it also could be from routine butter and oil use but I don’t want to overstep from the screen. I’d highly recommend looking into iamblackgirlcurls. They are licensed cosmetologists. I’m follow their recommendations and experimenting and Sis my hair is retaining more moisture than I’ve ever experienced and defining well. I just now need to focus on keeping up with my protein treatments because I am still high porosity nothing crazy but just need to make sure protein is somewhere in there every wash day.
I'm not an expert, but I think shampoos are supposed to have a lower PH so the cuticles can raise, allowing dirt and buildup to be removed. I think the PH of conditioners should be within the 4.5-5.5 range to lower the cuticles and keep moisture in.
Higher pH raises the cuticles and cleansing agents tend to be more alkaline than acidic. Lower, acidic pH closes the cuticle, like aloe Vera juice. But beer does have a low pH (which is why beer rinses were a thing for smoothing for a while) so that might explain why the pH was lower.
You are absolutely correct. I flip flopped the information.
Do you wash and rinse your hair with cold water all the time as high porosity hair?
Hey F! I wash my hair with warm water. When I rinse out my deep conditioner, I use cold water for that. Warm water helps to open the cuticle while cold water helps to close it.

Hey Myrna! How are you? 😊👋🏾
Machery-Nagel makes pH strips sold on Amazon. The lithium strips (pH strip) brand you used is VERY VERY VERY inaccurate. I stopped using that brand, its trash! The brand I mentioned is for DIY lotion & soap makers. Try it .
Thank you Z! I agree with you. After filming this video I searched "testing the pH of hair products" here on YT and everyone used the Machery-Nagel brand. I ordered some of those strips and the readings were slightly different. I will be using the Machery-Nagel brand from now on.
Suggestion: research fortified shampoo for fast hair growth.
