  • A summary of the very modest maintenace and wear and a few minor changes made to my 2018 Tundra after 4 years of heavy long distance towing and 100,000 miles (of which at least 60k has been used to tow a 7k GVWR travel trailer back and forth across country)

I put WeatherTech floor liners in my Tundra. I had them in my 2017 Tundra Limited and transferred them over to my 2021 TRD Pro when I purchased it last year. I was also able to transfer over my Toyota bed mat and undercover ultra flex tri-fold bed cover. My main reason for upgrading from the 2017 to the 2021 was because my 2017 was a 2WD and I needed 4WD. I lucked out and got a 2021 TRD Pro in October of 2021 at MSRP with no dealer mark up. To be perfectly honest I was really looking forward to the 2022 Tundra, and was planning on getting one. Once they announced they were going to the V6TT I knew I had to start looking for a 2021 before it was too late. The more I see and hear about the 2022 the more I know I made the right decision.

Absolutely you did. I was anticipating the 22 so bad and like you I found a used 2020 19k miles. 43k no mark ups. CREWMAX, TRD SPORT 4X4 . It basically has everything the pro has minus the stud plate and fox suspension. I am soo glad I bought this truck instead.

This is good info. I bought a 21 platinum. My theory was; basically the only thing wrong with them is poor mpg. But I’d rather pay a little more at the pump then deal with maintenance issues and give up reliability. Odds are it will take them years before they perfect the new generation. And sadly it might never be as reliable as the previous gen. High pressure engines don’t last as long as naturally aspirated motors. These 5.7L were getting 3-400k on basic maintenance. I doubt twin turbo hybrids will get that anytime soon.

I own a 2008 tundra 5.7 with around 200k miles. Replaced two starters, water pump, the cheap plastic radiator. Most expensive repair was replacing injectors that went bad at 80k miles. The power door locks went bad and the tailgate release is a bad design that eventually fails. It’s been a good truck all told.

I have a 2017 Limited double cab that I bought new, and was very disappointed with the Dunlop car tires that it came with. I switched them almost immediately with BFG K02’s that are wearing out now with over 100,000 km on them. I am replacing them with Falken AT3W’s as they are more heavy duty and well set up for towing our travel trailer. I also installed Sumo springs to replace the factory bump stops, it really helps to keep the truck leveled while towing…
Good choice on the TRD sway bar, I absolutely recommend it!

Good video! My biggest disappointment with my two Toyota’s has been the factory tires. Both my 4Runner and Tundra now have KO2s and they are awesome tires.
I take long trips once a year or more; 7,000 miles or more and do the same schedule on oil changes. Normally, I change it at 5,000 miles. I thought about the sway bar but I don’t do towing yet. I do see a little body roll but not much and usually when I’m talking a highway ramp and way over the posted speed limit. If I was towing I’d definitely have the bar.
I have yet to sit or drive a car or truck with as big and roomy a seat as the second gen Tundra. It’s part of the reason I bought the truck.
Spot on about the 2022! Obviously, I love Toyota but the third gen is going to be Toyota’s biggest failure. It’s not a pickup, it’s a mall crawler with a box!

I have a 2012 Tundra with 100,000 miles on it and the 4.6l-v8 engine. The only problem’s I ever had was pressed together radiator started seeping at the joints in the 70’s or 80’s and the heater/ac blower motor went to full speed and would not stop. Even when the engine was turned off. And the keys removed! I had to disconnect the battery to get the blower motor to stop running. Good thing that worked. I’m using the integrated. I’m a 2015 I have an aftermarket break controller. They both actually work well. Originally, I thought my 2018 was failing because I had to turn the gain up to 10 on my Lance 2375 travel trailer. On the Lance 1995 it works great at a gain of 5.0.
