Spectacular cast, spectacular conducting, - clear and transparent. If, that is, if you can get past all the screaming and yammering of Modl as the Nurse. Inge B. Woman is dramatically a knockout. As if the role was written for her. One of the best performances all round I've ever heard. Thanks for posting it,
Thank you for posting this. I like this recording, but unfortunately live versions of this opera always cut out a lot of music. Like near the very end here, "Es gibt derer," there are some cuts here that are unfortunate, I think. Some music is used which is transformed in the third act, and it gives a sense of continuity and symphonic development. Böhm does this, too. The only recording I know of that is complete and unabridged is Solti/Vienna Philharmonic/Decca.
Robert Berger The first completely uncut Frau recording was made in 1950 with the orchestra of the Hessian Radio. It stars Annelies Kupper as the Empress, Heinrich Bensing as the Emperor, Erna Schlüter as the Dyer's Wife and Diana Eustrati as the Nurse. It is quite good considering, though nowhere near as idiomatic as Böhm's 1954 Decca studio set, nor as incandescent as his live 1977 Vienna set. It is available on CD; the conductor is Winfried Zillig.

there is also an unforgettable DVD with Solti conducting the Wiener... A dream, with the symbolisticmood, almost Zauberflöte-like.
