Kangku Dai was my 1st Dan Kata. I call it The Killer Kata. It’s long 67 movements. Beautiful Kata. And may I add very mystical. There something very special about this Kata that has a very deep spiritual depth. That you would not believe me where this Kata has taken me.
Before I even joined a Shotokan school. I learned all the Kata to Empi,Hangetsu and Gangaku. Karate Do Kyhohan. Ate that book up. Then Mas Oyama . With Kangku Sho and Basai Sho. Then I finally joined a School n Santa Rosa. But when I did Kangku Dai. I train in a Sand Volleyball Court. I just dug that sand up. But doing Kangku Dai. These two white butterfly would start dancing all around me. Dam near EVERYTIME I did the Kata. They never came out when I did anything else. This went on for the whole summer. Trip me the hell out. I was reading some Japanese Fiction about a Fisherman who became a Warrior using Sai’s.but the were talking about KANJI’S. JAPANESE SPIRITS. I always felt that those two butterflies were Kanji’s.Spirits of Budo. This was 1985. Today as I work my vegetable garden for the last 3 years. When plants are blooming. Two white butterfly’s flutter around my garden. They are my protectors. Long story. But very true.
Good morning sensei. Congratulations for the channel and post. My name is Douglas. I practice karate since I was little. I have always had difficulties with the timing of movements in the kata; they usually come out too fast, trampling the next move. Could you help me, please? Are there any techniques to train the timing of movements? There is a possibility of making a video with an explanation. Thank you very much in advance.
Hey, thanks for your message. Here is a video I did on slow movements which might help you. ruclips.net/video/VLbeaCcga6M/видео.html I love to hear what people want to see so I can create more content around that. So I can definitely cover this topic more :)
One of the critical components to any of the Kata is Dynamic Breathing. When I started Shotokan I didn’t know that or understood it. Then one of my fellow student explained to me why I was always worn out and out of breath. I was explaining this yesterday. Kata have a Dynamic breathing in each Kata. Slow,Fast or Medium. It’s basically as you excecute each movement with the correct breathing to that movement. Helps with timing of technique and energy behind the techniques. Correct breathing. Is a vital aspect of Martial Arts.
Excelente Kata. Pero sensei, trata de no tensionante mucho cuando la hagas. Deja que fluya los movimientos. Se me han olvidado, voy a practicarlas. Abrazos
