Your freshman curriculum was perfectly normal, especially for a liberal arts institution. That's the difference between college and trade school. In a trade school, you'd have dived right into the field on Day 1 with very little coursework outside of the major. I didn't go to Clark, but I know that the first two years at any four-year college are practically the same. The first two undergraduate years of most colleges and universities will consist mostly of general education requirements that all students must take--English, social science/history, math, science, PE, and maybe a foreign language ( which is similar to a high school curriculum, but with added rigor). A few major classes may be sprinkled in your sophomore curriculum, but you don't fully immerse yourself in your major until junior year. The only college/university students that get to skip all the basic requirements are those who passed lots of college-level coursework or AP/IB exams in high school. Also, it doesn't matter the type of college. My dad went to northern, white university, and I attended a southern HBCU and majored in the same field. During my first two years, I took almost all of the same courses he took. In addition, many students who don't feel challenged as freshmen have a totally different experience by late sophomore year or junior year when they enter their upper-level courses. I'd tell any student to use those easier, lower-level courses to pump up their GPA. If they do that, then they'll have some GPA "cushion" in the event that they later earn a lower grade in a tough, upper-level class. Good luck with your future!

i was accepted to Clark as a transfer student. I was so excited to attend but once transfer orientation came around i went by myself. I really hated the vibe of the people!! And they really have no aid available for transfer students.

I appreciate your honesty. I know people that came to CAU from NYC or Cali or Midwest (etc.) that had the same experience when it comes to cultural adaptation in Atlanta & being homesick. Definitely a conversation that people do not discuss that should be had.
I would say regarding your major: at CAU you usually won't start entering your major classes until the end of your sophomore/beginning of junior year.
But you did say what many students need to know and understand. The degree is your top priority. I know people that didn t graduate on time or dropped out because they loss focus and were not on top of their stuff. Misadvisement is real! Faculty not caring about you is real! And that's the message that needs to be taken away from that video. Stay on top of your stuff. Best of wishes on continuing your education.

Your perception and experience at CAU didn’t have any inaccuracies. I left Clark too. I tried to just rule my unhappiness as “oh I’m not giving it a chance”, as well. I loved Atlanta so much too during my time there and all that the city had to offer me as a Black woman but I had to realize those were all things I could come back too at any time. The majority of my close friends left before me and I just kept telling myself I’d stick it out and persevere, but I finally let it go& transferred.
My major issues I saw there that even seem to persist with other HBCUs is the overall lack of accountability. I didn’t like that the culture of the city was contributing such a definitive perception to the type of things you should be into as a black person or just how you should be for many people on campus there. I feel that as people of color we have enough stigmas, generalizations, and stereotypes hanging over our heads that aren’t true and biased from other races, so the last thing I feel like doing is being harassed by other people of color for not liking some local Atlanta rap or not being into some trend that’s big in the city at the time to the point where I’m being questioned ignorantly about how can I be black. Also, I would often hear “oh I couldn’t work or be anywhere with out all black people”( I love being black) but let’s get real that’s not the real world, and teachers were upholding this perception. Then there was how it was just accepted and expected for administration to be lethargic and dysfunctional. As Black people in my opinion we have to let go of this idea that everything must be a struggle. We never deserved to be enslaved or to fight to be treated humane. So if financial aid pays out your tuition on time, you still deserve your degree. It doesn’t need to be going to class 14 days and getting purged and arguing with 20 people for it back for it to count. The character of the school and it’s history in my opinion just weren’t being upheld for all that you were being held accountable to pay for so called experiencing it. For other readers I’m not trying to bash the school either, this is just my transparent perception and experience that is similar.
When I first looked into Clark, I loved the idea of attending school with such a rich history. I loved knowing that the bevy of people there that looked like me were attempting to be successful. The problem is though, there is a need to fix a serious lack of cultural exposure, a degree of pettiness in many areas of administration, and to combust a way too prideful environment, that lacked work ethic behind the pride.
I’m happy you made a choice that best suited you and your needs. Mental and Physical health during college is very important! One thing I definitely took from CAU find a way or make one even if it’s the hell up out of there!

Let’s get back to the facts . . Like i stated in the video Clark Atlanta wasn’t for ME. All the opportunities you named are beautiful job opportunities but non related to criminal justice! It shouldn’t take you graduating to realize whether or not your degree will benefit you. If you watched the video you would know my classes weren’t related to my major. I appreciate your well wishes love. Good luck to you as well.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Only you can make the right call for your life. However I can see where others who actually have attended or are currently attending Clark University, would take offense when you have deemed possibly obtaining a degree from there as "Worthless". That name alone can be harmful especially for an HBCU. So you must take that into consideration. Ultimately I'm glad you found the right University that works for you and your long term goals!

Omg...imma keep it a buck....I went to bennett college (all girls hbcu) in greensboro north Carolina in 2001.....I HATED it and on top of it I got raped my freshman year after I was set up by a junior (girl) who went to bennett. I begged my parents to come home and they said no because "I would be letting my attacker win) boy was I pissed....plus besides the incident the curriculum sucked ass...the professors (if I can even call them that) were ghetto af and very much picking students to be teachers pet type ish...also they didn't teach well. My parents paid all this money for me to eat in the cafeteria and the food was ass....omg it was just a horrible experience...long story short I LEFT after my second semester of sophomore year. I was happy AF to come home to NJ....I was mad AF at the experience...I ended up really not enjoying the company of my own race because I was picked on at bennett for the way I spoke...they called me white girl because of the way I spoke....when really I can't help that I grew up in the suburbs with education by two parents who were educators so speech was extremely important and expected in my household. I'm over it now and realize I can't hold that experience over the ENTIRE race it was just those messed up people that I encountered. Anyway thanks for sharing ur story.
