Both the song and album were 100% robbed at the Grammys that year. It took them almost another decade and the release of ‘Ray Of Light’ to garner their attention.
at the time, Pepsi sponsored the grammys therefore they pressed the organization to NOT give Madonna any wins because of the controversy of the "Like a Prayer" video, and as soon as Coca Cola was the grammys' sponsor, she won immediately the long overdue grammy with "Ray Of Light"
I eas a junior in h.s. dealing with the flu and strep when MTV aired this in March 1989. I was gobsmacked! Loved it! Swear it helped me get better. I was pretty damn sick!
Even as a kid back in the day, it was clear to me that she was dancing in defiance of the crosses. The video is about standing up to racism. Speaking up and doing the right thing instead of looking the other way.
I bet Patrick Leonard isn't criticizing anymore. Like a Prayer is one of the brightest crowned jewels she has. And both of them got a FAT Marvel check this year. LOL
First: Pepsi has just released a video advertising using Madonnas Like A Prayer! This apology comes more than 30 years too late! Madonna went on to sell more than 300 million records. Her Tour Blond Ambition went on to be the most iconic female tour of all time. Without Pepsi... which was supposed to sponsor the tour. Second: The lyrics have a lot of innuendo even without the video "I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there". Third: She is bossy. Time is money and the money is really hers. Men obviously hate to hear that! This video is inaccurate and sloppy researched. For a better option listen to the podcast "Inside the Groove" the Deep Dive episode for "Like A Prayer" or the Podcast "All I Wanna Do Is Talk About Madonna" and their Like A Prayer episode. Stay away from straight people reviewing Madonnas work. They lack the sensitivity to notice or admit the queer and intersecttional aspects of her work and most importantly the very evident gay and gender identity undertones and issues that she conciously addresses with her music since 1983
You’re absolutely wrong about straight reactors,I’m gay and the best reactors to madonna’s discography has always been straight. The few gays, do not dig deeper than surface level on her songs/videos.
(11:27) Black Box's "Ride on Time" was the UK's #1 that year? Really? No offense, but it wasn't "Everybody Everybody." It wasn't even "Strike it Up." Over Madonna?! Wow.
You are exaggerating so much. She is not sexually dancing at all. She is just dancing. The video is so important and relevant even today with it’s subject matter. I think the lyrics are more sexual then the video. The lyrics are talking about oral sex. The video is more about racism and inter racial love being labeled still as something taboo.
@@frankchambers3042 I didn’t say the song is about oral sex. One line is though but the song overall is about sexual ecstasy in relation to religious ecstasy
I cannot believe that this song/video did not win a Grammy. :(

@@MarvelMex Oh wow. Thanks for letting me know. But it was so good, she should have been given a Grammy for it retrospectively.
as usual, the positive message conveyed in the music video goes unmentioned. Like a Prayer is a masterpiece
😅😅😅 yeah,im sure the burning crosses are always seen as a positive message.gtfoh. Im surprised she didn't come out in a sheet and a hood.
It's my favorite Madonna video!
The song was a huge hit!! The video was an even bigger hit!
More on Madonna please
brilliantly done.
both you AND Madonna.
Both the video and song are compelling. My favorite song of hers.
Every artist has their important and staple song - Prince has purple rain , MJ has Man in the mirror and M has this ❤
and they are all dead. M almost died.

Love tour vídeo about this song. Amazing
Foreigner's 1984 #1 hit 'I Want to Know What Love' Is did gospel+pop.
I left for my first trip to Europe just a week or two later.
🔥🔥🔥🔥 like a SCARE
I came here from Deadpool
IT’S NOT BLACK JESUS. It’s Saint Martin of Porres. He’s the patron Saint of racial harmony!!!
Yes!

You think Madonna likes the song? Of course she does she knows it’s regarded as her best
@@thevalkyrie8 she said last year it’s her favourite song to perform live / I think la Isla Bonita is also one of her favourites too

Straight people , especially men; also believe they are great at making gay jokes. Until a gay comedian comes up!

This song is not about oral sex. Maybe that’s how you perceive it but that’s not why it was written.
