Peter Drury's commentary is a masterpiece that turns football matches into symphonies of emotion. His words paint vivid pictures of triumph and heartache, bridging the gap between stadiums and living rooms with raw passion. A true maestro of the microphone, transforming the beautiful game into an enchanting journey of passion and drama.
What a humble guy. He hardly ever credits himself for all his great work even though we all know that he's probably the guy that makes football commentary relevant these days.
He's nowhere close to being the greatest commentator, he's honestly miles off it. Compared to the greats he's completely insipid. 3:40 is EXACTLY why he is one of if not the best commentators in football. He is 100% spot on. You don’t tune into a game to listen to commentators, you tune in to watch the game. Commentators should never make it about them (being biased, being over the top, etc) Drury is easy to listen to, you get real emotions when he commentates, he’s never biased (he will cheer a goal regardless who scored)
Which was a big part of why Tyler was so loved for so long. A traditional play by play commentator just calling what is going on. But expectations changed and fans increasingly wanted emotion and shouting and screaming like it’s a WWE event or an eSports twitch stream.
He’s right. But at the same time there’s some commentators that make me want to tune out. Robbie Savage and Steve McManaman are horrific to listen to for example.
