usually how the loco pilot infm abt the lico failure? is there wireless systm or any other way if the failure is in btween stations? now they may hv mobile phones what was the system in earlier days

so all the trains running double headed round the uk are broken down trains what about usa where you see four locomotives on a train a mile long . what about Russia where you several trains of mixed traffic including cargo an passengers mixed up with engines in the middle of the train on colossal milage journeys. . I think its done for a number of reasons logistics, gradient and load. and of course another method of taking extra fuel tanks, Theres no real evidence here of a train stranded and being rescued by another, maybe just one at 12 39. sorry to sound negative I was expecting to see guys in hi viz with a spanner of three in his hand :) Enjoyed the video though . +John Phillips In Indian Railways the Locomotives are allocated to several different Loco sheds Zonal wise and the Shed's maintain them through out the codal life of the Locomotive. In case of ALCo's each shed keeps a separate Color Scheme and a Logo to differentiate them. A train is not allowed to be hauled by 2 different Shed locomotives in MU and that is never allowed . So if you are talking about Twins, Triplets, Quadruplets or Penta headers in MU they all have to belong to the same Shed which is not the case in this video.Another scenario is when trains pass through a Ghat section and requires Bankers then they are attached either at the front or to the rear end depending on whether to Push or Pull a train which again is not applicable in this video.

Usually the failed loco is taken off as it becomes a dead weight and slows down the train.

Double locos are used when there a high grade in the journey. for example in ghat sections, there both the locos provide traction.
