The game is 100% darker than the movie. Anakin toying with the Jedi in the Jedi Temple as he cuts them down with ease. Clones and Jedi when a limb gets cut off or they are stabbed. Anakin wearing Windu done to the point he has no strength to fight that he gets stabbed and aggressively thrown out the window. The alternative timeline where Obi-Wan hesitated for just a moment where gets stabbed and killed and then catches Sideous off-guard and kills him. This game is so amazing! And it works so well as a prequel to The Force Unleashed. In my head canon, we don’t see Shaak Ti in here, cuz she escapes and lives long enough to be featured in The Force Unleashed.
21:10 Those Vader comics are incredible, what are you talking about? She has all of 2 lines outside of the comics, they single handedly gave her a character worthy of being one of the most important figures in the jedi order. Her demise at the hands of Vader is so cold.
2005 was the year when Star Wars really reached it highest peak with the movie, book, and video games (star wars episode 3 the video game and star wars battlefront 2 the 2005 edition)
This game was actually very similar to two of the lord of the rings games that came out a little earlier - the two towers and return of the king adaptations. It really suited Star Wars surprisingly well though.
You missed the multiplayer which was honestly the best part about this game. My brother and I absolutely rinsed that mode and must have duelled with pretty much every permutation
Dude I can’t believe you didn’t review the best part of the actual games, the multiplayer duel mode , I used to spend hours with my brother battling each other with the different Jedi and you can also fight the cpu if you’re by yourself playing, it’s essentially a Star Wars version of mortal kombat
I thought I was crazy, because that is what I mostly remember about this game, how good the multiplayer duel was, and after the review I was questioning if that was even the same game
"You know, back when getting stabbed with a lightsaber actually killed a person." Not to be rude, but one of the fan favorite villains that was brought back literally lost more then half of his body, it's a bit too late to be worried about realism in this series.
Maul gets a pass because as far as i know he was the first. And also cool so people are more willing to "look the other way" a little for characters that are cool. Ie boba fett doing litterally nothing and becoming popular because hes cool
I love these games because it sheds more light on anakins thoughts during episode three and makes him seem less bi polar and whiny than he did in the movies like the whole scene where anakin tells mace that killing sidous is against the Jedi way
I remember playing this game back in the late 2000's on my PS2 while going to swimming lessons at my local YMCA. It is a time period of my life that I will never forget. I still play this game too this day and has a very special place in my heart.
Damn, i remember spending hours in the Yoda mini-mission figuring out the best combos to get thru the clone waves in the fastest time. For a movie-based video game, ROTS was surprisingly good. That was a great time killer for a teen fresh out of 8th grade and enjoying the summer before high school
I feel like Yoda was planned to be a part of the multiplayer dueling mode, because the two cutscenes that play when his bonus mission begins and ends are animated in the same vein as every other character in the versus mode. My guess is that he was cut because he was so hard to deal with on the other characters' end. A similar problem happened with the game Soulcalibur 4, where Yoda was a guest character; half of the opponent's moves didn't work on Yoda. He was regarded as one of the most hated characters in the series. So I think they were a bit smarter than Bandai Namco was.
2:45 I really think they should have mixed episode 2 and 3 in the Campaign mode at least (or even add some 2003's Clone Wars levels), plus a third campaign with Yoda (a bit like Gandalf in PC's LotR: Return of the King). It would have made the gametime longer, and then I would have added Qui-Gon Jinn, Darth Maul (or even Asajj Ventress and other Jedi of the Council) for the Multiplayer's Combat mode.
I remember reading the Ep3 novelization as a kid (very very good btw) and it had the scene in it on the game on the ship with the water part and getting electrocuted ect. Can’t remember all the details but my guess is they were following the book. Funny you should mention the Ep1 alternate universe because I just picked up the Ep1 novelization a week ago at a 2nd and Charles bookstore. I’ll have to see if they followed that narrative for the game too.
The gameboy version looks like someone fulfilled a childhood dream of making that exact game. The subtlety of the animation, each character having different powers, the richness of the art style (especially the close-ups of the characters faces) are all above and beyond what you'd expect for something like this. Someone fulfilled a childhood fantasy when making this game for sure.
Yup. Tom Kane has been in a *_lot_* of Star Wars stuff and played many different roles, including: Yoda (both Clone Wars cartoons and most games) Admiral Yularen (The Clone Wars and Rebels) The Clone Wars Narrator Admiral Ackbar (Lego, Battlefront, The Last Jedi) Boba Fett (Demolition, Galactic Battlegrounds, Jedi Academy) Qui-Gon (Lego Skywalker Saga) Ozzik Sturn (The Force Unleashed) Leebo (Shadows of the Empire) Master Vandar (Knights of the Old Republic) And many more. Sadly, he had to retire in 2020 after suffering a stroke that impeded his speech. I'm glad he's still with us, but I'll miss hearing him. He was one of the greats.
There was an Episode 2 game called Star Wars The Clone Wars on PS2, which was based on the movie and was mostly a vehicle based game. The multiplayer mode was awesome!
Both Anakin and Obi Wan have a force stun ability that can halt an enemy in their tracks but unless it’s maxed out it can end up destroying your combat flow.
For the little bit where you take control of a Separatist Cannon in the Invisible Hand if you keep pressing the fire button and also move it you can see the cannon still moving before the end of the mission.
I read the novel and finished the game right before the movie was released. I saw the movie opening day and was excited. The theater was packed and I got stuck next to a kid who must have been 6 or 7 years old with his mother. That kid talked and talked. If he wasn't talking then he was screaming he wanted popcorn or candy. I finally got fed up and leaned over to him and told him how the movie ended. His mother got mad. I just smiled and told her to button her lip and her kid's. She and her kid didn't make a sound.
Matt Lucas, who voices Anakin, also voiced him in the 2003 Clone Wars 2D micro series. While he does sound better in the show (he gives a really good performance in the Ventress episode) I think he fits well in this game. He’s no Matt Lanter but he’s a good substitute for Hayden.
If I remember correctly, Mat Lucas did Anakin’s voice in this game - they just took the VAs from Cartoon Network’s “Clone Wars” series for this game. I agree, however - I don’t think Lucas’ take did Anakin justice in most of this game.
I know I'm wrong when I make these comparisons, but the game play LOOKS like a combination of Jedi Power Battles and The Force Unleashed (yes i know these were released ages apart, I'm using comparisons of things I'm familiar with)
12:20 A fun thing I always liked to do was rhythmically press the B button on these panels. Constantly starting and canceling the animation would drastically offset the character to the point where they'd be cutting into the far side of the wall next to the panel. Due to the misalignment when the character discards the panel, it would interact with and physically move the character. So many dumb fun memories. I love this game so much. *edit 44:27 Also, OH MY GOD!! I forgot how much of drastic change Anakin's Dark Side sprite was. He straight up looks like a Vampire!
This game has been with me since my earliest memory, I’ve played this game so much as a kid that I’m 90% sure I could recall the layout of a given stage with moderate accuracy. I’m massively in love with this game.
Is it just me or the cutscene in 20:12 shows enviroment damage from the lightsaber? Whe anakin his the wall his lightsaber hits an object (I have no idea what it is) on the wall and cuts/destroys it.
7:12 Weird Al? Is that you? Aaahhh! So THIS is how he got access to some pretty official looking gear for his video shoot for the amazing The Saga Begins?
Only thing you forgot to mention was the Mortal Kombat style portion where you have a whole roster of literally all the saber wielding bosses, and you can fight PvP or (I think, it's been a while) vs AI, and you get an opposite sith/Jedi version if both characters are the same. Vader with a blue lightsaber, Anakin with red, Grievous with red...that game was over the top on fan service.
14:40 no. Those are NOT Cortosis battle droids. Those are B2 Grapple droids, just like the weird bulking flying battle droid they were made for the Game Then made canon in Maul: son of dathomir
i’m about to fall asleep so i’ll come back to this tomorrow, but i’m really hoping you covered the fatalities in this game. i’ve never been able to find a video of them
i played the damm game this year and it's still a hit i wish a new hope or another film was adapted like that and what's crazy is that we got 4 great star wars games in 2005 revenge of the siths , lego star wars the video game, battlefront 2 and republic commando
I played this game during my childhood and it was one of my favorites especially with the Unique Units for both the droids and the clones, even the jedi have unique units as well. And my favorite part, besides those was the alternate ending of anakin, winning that duel which was the catalyst for the Star Wars What if community that's now Flourishing last and this year!
being stabbed by lightsaber used to be lethal? ... a lot of novels, comics and videogames from that time (and before) disagree with that statement. They were lethal in movies only.
At least Starkiller getting stabbed and living makes some sense as Vader had to make sure his lungs were empty of oxygen after jettisoning him (otherwise, they'd burst). Other than that, there was Maul, and personally I always hated resurrecting him. What Disney did with lightsabers though is criminal. I felt like throwing my remote at the TV during Ahsoka's second episode. I was like, "oh come the fuck ON!".
@@yarpen26 what about Caedus. That took place around time when RotS was out. The guy got stabbed and then sliced several times with the lightsaber and still fought like barely anything happened.
The basic skeleton of the game actually reminded me of the two towers/return of the king games; similar vintage of surprisingly great movie tie ins so I suppose that’s not overly surprising. The camera, flow between combat arenas, xp system with combo unlocks, and kill rating system all evoked those lotr games for me. Seem to remember the rotk gba game was a nice little quasi-arpg too. Once again, always good to see a fellow eu enjoyer!
Great video, you did a fantastic job diving into the game fully, kudos! It’s a classic for all Star Wars fans, and still one of the most fun to play through, I had a lot of fun playing this again and reviewing this for a video a while back. It was a blast talking about it with everyone. I’ve been hounding Aspyr Media for years to remaster and rerelease this game, even more so after The Phantom Menace game got released on PS5. Here’s hoping we get to see that done for ROTS as well sometime soon.
Great video! Really hope the game gets a full on remake/remaster for its 20th anniversary, it would be cool if you covered the different versions of the force unleashed games and compared them if you haven't already as some iterations are have more/less levels and modes.
Actually found this game on the Microsoft store on my series x and bought it , brought back so many memories I never realized how difficult some parts are on this game as a kid
The Revenge of the Sith game, is easily one of the most underrated SW games to be released. The good thing is that people can buy it on Xbox store if they want to play it, because of the backwards compatibility. Great video btw.
Nothing beats Jedi Knight Outcast/Academy imo. Best sabre combat by far which has never been topped since. Not to mention the epic mods like Movie Battles which still has a multiplayer population today!
I only bought this game to unlock the lightsaber duel mode and duel mode characters. Just wish there were more duel mode characters. I dont get why we haven't gotten a straight lightsaber duel game like that. Only one I can think of was a wii exclusive.
Almost 20 years later it is STILL the best star wars dueling game Force Unleashed duel was SO meh Soulcalibur 4 was slow The WII game was kinda meh too REALLY need a remaster of this game that adds Yoda and Magnaguard to versus mode
You say that this is like spiritual succesor of The Phantom menace game, but i always thought this was actually a better version of Jedi Power Battles! (another Episode 1 tie in). At least, i always found the combat system and arcady feel was directly took from that game
I really wish you didn't rag on the Disney canon so much in these videos. It genuinely diminishes my enjoyment of your content. You can like one thing without constantly feeling the need to drag other things down. The Charles Soule Vader comics (where Jocasta Nu initially survived Order 66, but was ultimately caught and killed by Vader) is genuinely fantastic. Great art, well written, good character exploration. Don't discount things just because they don't match the old continuity. And hell, Legends had even more Order 66 survivors than Disney canon does. You mentioned one in this video, with Jerec.
Yeah, I kind'a felt the same. The video was pretty on point but a lot of the sort of common fandom shots at the Disney stuff took me right back out of it. Still a good video, but definitely a negative for me.
@@AlleyinThrees Agreed. Overall, I really like the content on this channel. But every time he interrupts a video so he can take random shots at Disney stuff (especially stuff that it feels like he hasn't even read himself, and is generally accepted by the wider audience as really well-received like Charles Soule's comics), it just completely takes me out and reminds me there's a really, really forced culture war going on around Star Wars.
I appreciate the feedback! 🙏 I didn't actually even mean to be taking a real shot at Disney for no reason there. I was just trying to make jokes with that one to be funny.
@@evprince I get that. I do largely enjoy a lot of the comedy on this channel. I guess I'm just kinda burned out from how much rampant hate there is online for the Disney canon, when a lot of it outside of Episodes VII, VIII, and IX is actually really well-written. There's a lot of love and care put into a lot of the new comics and novels, and I kinda wish more folks with give it a shot instead of dismissing it, ya know?
@infinitesheldon5710 Hey man, I rag on Disney as a company, but fans of Disney Star Wars are, of course, still welcome on my channel! We have fun here.
I want to point out on the GBA version, force push is actually different between the two. For Obi Wan at max level it can push 3 enemies, so it's good for crowd control. Meanwhile, Anakin's can still only push 1 enemy, but the pushes deal damage. Force pull however still remains the same for both I think.
Hold up You didn’t talk about the best mode in this game? The versus mode? The game itself is fun alone simply because of the dueling mechanics and the versus mode really lets that shine Also i highly agree people should mod this game, i’d love to play as unique characters in the versus mode or play with the alternate mirror match costumes as the main ones Even something basic like a color changer for the sabers would be really cool

@@1000g2g3g4g800999 thats because, well, both games are within EU canon, which was labeled as Legends under disney
I'm not high right? He talked about Force Stun twice 7:59 😂
i was thinking the same thing lmaoo
Literally happened as I lit the blunt I was like I’m not tripping right
He just missed it in editing I guess 😅
@@ChrisMortJr. I did, in fact, miss it in the editing.
@@evprince honest mistake.
Arguably the best movie game made, this was great and my friends and I absolutely loved dueling each other
You repeat a line about combat flow around the 8 minute mark.
I’m more concerned about the way he pronounces grevious.
@samspeaks2016 yeah, it's quite...grievous
Ahh, but at least he read it with a different inflection the second time! ^_^ haha
Why do you care?
21:00 Fun fact: the Jedi Archive was allegedly inspired by Trinity College Library in Dublin. I've been there several times. Wonderful place!
We’re reaching levels of kino I didn’t think were possible.
And we're going even deeper from here.
This game has the best lightsaber combat in any game and it’s not even close. The skill gap can be genuinely insane
We NEED a remaster of this with few additions like Yoda for duel mode, ability to choose costumes, etc
A magical time. The good old days right here. Classic game. Before the woke nightmare that is Disney Star Wars.
I love these games because it sheds more light on anakins thoughts during episode three and makes him seem less bi polar and whiny than he did in the movies like the whole scene where anakin tells mace that killing sidous is against the Jedi way
I love the dueling mode of this game!
I remember playing this game back in the late 2000's on my PS2 while going to swimming lessons at my local YMCA. It is a time period of my life that I will never forget. I still play this game too this day and has a very special place in my heart.
Now revenge of the sith remastered with third person with todays graphics would be amazing
Considering Sony ported the PS1 game of Ep1 to PS4/5, I'm kinda hoping they are gonna do the same with this one.
They also ported the Clone Wars PS2 game
Still waiting for Aspyr to remaster this game
That novelization is one of the better star wars books and I loved it.
Anakin Skywalker killing Obi-Wan and Sidious saved the galaxy from the sequels.
I want this game with achievements + HD
The Magnaguard thing is also either confirmed or speculated to be an Indiana Jones reference.
25:28 I recogize that voice as Galen Mareks father from Starwars Force Unleashed.
Yup. Tom Kane has been in a *_lot_* of Star Wars stuff and played many different roles, including:
Yoda (both Clone Wars cartoons and most games)
Admiral Yularen (The Clone Wars and Rebels)
The Clone Wars Narrator
Admiral Ackbar (Lego, Battlefront, The Last Jedi)
Boba Fett (Demolition, Galactic Battlegrounds, Jedi Academy)
Qui-Gon (Lego Skywalker Saga)
Ozzik Sturn (The Force Unleashed)
Leebo (Shadows of the Empire)
Master Vandar (Knights of the Old Republic)
And many more. Sadly, he had to retire in 2020 after suffering a stroke that impeded his speech. I'm glad he's still with us, but I'll miss hearing him. He was one of the greats.
Didn't know he did that many starwars voices. I know I've heard him in other games but couldn't place which ones except Starwars Force Unleashed.
She and her kid didn't make a sound.
not even 30 minutes into my day and this is uploaded. time for my childhood memories to flood in
13:28 On the PS2 version, you can still move and shoot the turret.
I know I'm wrong when I make these comparisons, but the game play LOOKS like a combination of Jedi Power Battles and The Force Unleashed (yes i know these were released ages apart, I'm using comparisons of things I'm familiar with)
Still has my favorite combat in any Star Wars Game. And me and my brother loved fighting one another.
This game and Battlefront 2, Return of the King on PS2 was my childhood
12:20
A fun thing I always liked to do was rhythmically press the B button on these panels. Constantly starting and canceling the animation would drastically offset the character to the point where they'd be cutting into the far side of the wall next to the panel. Due to the misalignment when the character discards the panel, it would interact with and physically move the character.
So many dumb fun memories. I love this game so much.
*edit
44:27
Also, OH MY GOD!! I forgot how much of drastic change Anakin's Dark Side sprite was. He straight up looks like a Vampire!
8:08 repeat?
Yeah, it threw me off
When I was a kid I used to play this game before The Force Unleashed (ps2) it felt like one big story
This game has been with me since my earliest memory, I’ve played this game so much as a kid that I’m 90% sure I could recall the layout of a given stage with moderate accuracy. I’m massively in love with this game.
Grievous not Grievious
Pretty grievious error
He honestly made me question the spelling
I may hive mild dyslexia.
Being the older sibling that read the manual to work out some of the "Advanced" combos in multiplayer definitely made my brothers rage -- good times
NGL watching those Grievous attack patterns low-ki gave me PTSD flashbacks. I remember being stuck _so long_ on Grievous as a kid.
Those are B2 Grapple droids, just like the weird bulking flying battle droid they were made for the Game
Then made canon in Maul: son of dathomir
i’m about to fall asleep so i’ll come back to this tomorrow, but i’m really hoping you covered the fatalities in this game. i’ve never been able to find a video of them
i played the damm game this year
and it's still a hit
i wish a new hope or another film was adapted like that
and what's crazy is that we got 4 great star wars games in 2005
revenge of the siths , lego star wars the video game, battlefront 2 and republic commando
Just replayed this 2 weeks ago, and was surprised how well it held up. Probably havent played it since it first came out
Never noticed it before. Sera looks like a descendant of Bastila. Her hair and face resemble those of her and her line.
My favorite movie and one of my favorite games. Was eagerly awaiting this one! Good work as always
The Grievous mispronunciation was driving me nuts😭 but great vid still, loved this game growing up
I love the force killers they send to kill Yoda at the end with the melee users it was so badass and was the first time I ever heard of those troopers
being stabbed by lightsaber used to be lethal? ... a lot of novels, comics and videogames from that time (and before) disagree with that statement. They were lethal in movies only.
Honestly they're about as inconsistent as a blaster shot being lethal.
@@Silence-qm3ku Sorry, I know that Jacen turned evil but I never made it through even the NJO.
The Droid Army was a good Star Wars GBA game. Had a lot of fun playing it back in the day
Great video, you did a fantastic job diving into the game fully, kudos!
Really hope the game gets a full on remake/remaster for its 20th anniversary, it would be cool if you covered the different versions of the force unleashed games and compared them if you haven't already as some iterations are have more/less levels and modes.
this game in retrospect is a much better star wars dark souls game than jedi fallen order and survivor
Man I love this game so much. Probably my most played game from when I was a kid. Finished it 20 times probably. Thank you for the video!
42:52
sprite palps looks like a garlic bulb but pfp palps looks normal
Almost 20 years later it is STILL the best star wars dueling game
Force Unleashed duel was SO meh
Soulcalibur 4 was slow
The WII game was kinda meh too
REALLY need a remaster of this game that adds Yoda and Magnaguard to versus mode
There's Force Combat, but it's a really janky fan-made game though
You say that this is like spiritual succesor of The Phantom menace game, but i always thought this was actually a better version of Jedi Power Battles! (another Episode 1 tie in). At least, i always found the combat system and arcady feel was directly took from that game
I thought the same thing.
@@tibsky1396 funly enough, Jedi Power Batles remaster was anounced recently by Aspyr. Crossing fingers so they do the same with this game
What about the versus mode in the PS2 version? I don't remember you talking about it.
Awesome video! Played this game so much as a kid. Hated the turret levels. Thanks for taking me back to my childhood.
The evil laugh from Anakin was soo uncalled for lol
I didnt learn for years after the game come out that you could heal with pressing the two analog sticks down
Definitely one of the games of all time.
😂
13:47 Grievous is taller than I expected.
This is still the best 1v1 lightsaber combat of any Star Wars game ever.
Can you cover Lightsaber Duels on the Wii?
That game was fun. I unlocked the bonus characters, Mace Windu, Plo Koon and Kit Fisto.
I feel like it's inevitable that I will tbh
Hold up
You didn’t talk about the best mode in this game? The versus mode?
The game itself is fun alone simply because of the dueling mechanics and the versus mode really lets that shine
Also i highly agree people should mod this game, i’d love to play as unique characters in the versus mode or play with the alternate mirror match costumes as the main ones
Even something basic like a color changer for the sabers would be really cool
