I QUIT working on this 1953 Kenworth Pacific Bus! (For a while)

- There's some behind the scenes stuff in this video, along with some actual work mixed in. In the end, I find a problem that brings me to a dead stop on this project.
Thats a man who believes in his own words "If you're not having fun, you're doing it wrong." Love this guy, haha
I am really proud of how much thought went into making it a decent rig for the highway. Honestly, you are miles ahead of what effort I would of ever considered doing on something this far out of date. I see Fab Rats are now using a old school bus with some heavy duty axles for doing rock crawling on the Moab rock driving area in Utah. Somehow, I see you doing something similar on a rig that when parked most seriously wasn't runnable or driveable. Why, because you can and you have a side that enjoys the adventures you have already been doing similarly to this
Okay, now say it in English
@@mwilliamshs why dog me if ya don't like what I am saying.... plenty of room for you and me
@@morgansword why "dog you" if I *DO* like what you're saying?
Watching the engine temperature gauge on the desert grades... Reminded me of the TV movie 'Duel' with Dennis Weaver.
Against my better judgement, I recently recycled all my steel junk pile. Yard looks better but...
Bereft.
That wasn't a junk pile. That was a carefully organized store of spare parts.
That back to the future passed explanation fried my brain 😵💫
This is by far my favorite channel on RUclips.
I had a similar overheating issue. Replaced radiater, thermostat, e fans etc. Removed water plugs from engine block to find mud restricted water ways half way up engine.. Use hose pipe to flush. All fine. Mention in good faith.
just have to re watch James and his projects, brightens my day and a wealth of ideas
Another fabulous video. I can’t blame you for taking a break on the bus, projects like that can become all consuming and stop being fun and that’s against the rules😂 it’ll be good to see you working on something else again, I miss those crazy but cool projects. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺
Houses and RV's have one thing in common. They are both an on going projejts. You never finish them, but you really enjoy them. LOL
The explanation of time was worth the watch and the like. Sometimes you really crack me up.😂
I recommend adding a buzzer which starts buzzing if your engine or transmission temperature is going too high, so you don't need to constantly watch the gauges.
I've been pretty interested in fueling diesels with old motor oil lately. That bus running on oil would be awesome. Maybe flat towing a pickup you could use to refine the oil, with it being a diesel as well.
I REALLY want to see that cabover half track pick truck. that project is what led me to your channel.
Awesome begining to end restoration. Making parts repaired and improved. Many tech's improvements from 1953 to 2023. Keep up the good work and broadcating!!
Love the bus, can't wait to see the new paint job.
Loved the ride along, drove those rides slot in my younger days. Thanks for the channel always enjoy it
Ah white sands overflowing near the highway. Brings me back to when i was stationed at holloman AFB. 😊
Your advice about the work on the bus is appropriate
If you aren't having fun, you aren't doing it right, try another plan.
Great work champ
All my vehicle projects are on pause right now, it's just too hot where I live in Arizona to work outside or even in the shop or garage. But that's not really a bad thing as it let's me move on to other things and I now have time to plan and collect parts for my vehicle projects.
Great video thanks for sharing make sure the exhaust is as big and free flowing as you can make it that could help temps to
You put a smile on my face…
Thanks it was fun again.👍
I had fun watching you putter with the bus. I drove beer trucks for several years and the paint seemed to hold up well through Illinois farm land, with temps below freezing to over 90°.
This is probably one of my favorite channels this guy reminds me of my high school shop teacher good at explaining what hes doing
James that intake shows what Fab skills you have, you're someone that can keep and hold a person's attention that might normally lose their focus . I know you could really do a great service with some of the youths struggling to find out what they can excellent at .you really are a huge bank of useful and important skills and knowledge that is usefull. Have you been a teacher previously ?your channel is very interesting, entertaining and fun with the bonus of something useful being created .your great at what you do thank you!
Just wanted to say love your videos, my wife an I watch them all the time. I would like to make a suggestion for cooling your bus engine. Take the metal air piece you made for it , turn it 180 , an place it on the opposite side of that opening. That would allow it catch all the air as your driving an cool the radiator an the engine down like it should, in other words it would be come a air ram scoop. The way it is right now the air is just passing over it as your driving. This is just a suggestion an hopefully would work.
Some end-caps on the front-bumper will make it look way better,👍, I'm glad to hear you say that you're thinking of the looks of the bus, awesome video, and thanks for sharing.
Awesome james. I've enjoyed the bus. I wouldn't mind a yard walk looking at the past projects awaiting more attention and completed ones and how they are holding up. Would be a simple quick walk and talk video.
Kinda liked not knowing his name...
Very cool videos! I took many vacations around that part of the country. Kansas is a long ways away!! Miss those mountains!
Those "RUclipsr routine" explanations in the beginning are quite fun to watch, while said in your manner. Keep it up!)
I love your Star Trek communicator, I have the same one.
I'm pausing at 0:59 to go to the fridge and prepare a cold cold beverage (mineral water and orange concentrate - the Bombay Saphire is for Sat night)... because any Low-Buck upload deserves a dedicated yet relaxed viewing slot in the day...
This man is a national treasure.
I have to say, the bus may be consuming your life, but it's killing me. I can't wait for a new episode so I can see what you're doing next. I will share a personal story. Since you've started this, I have a renewed interest in my RV. We stopped camping during covid and have been thinking about selling it. Now I have put new batteries in, corrected a couple of issues, and are looking forward to getting on the road. THANK YOU for great videos.👍👍
Still need to get me a low buck tee!!
😁👍
I'm relatively new to this channel (only been watching it for around a month) but I have started recommending it to everybody I speak to when we get onto the subject of what to watch. Definitely the best show on RUclips.
Great job on the bus. Lots of little projects to learn from.
I think Derek imitated a really funny comedian called Red Green, and this guy is following Derek.
They are all excellent!
Great Job, that bus is really turning out nice. How ingenious you are making all those different parts just utilizing junk (I mean goodies) you have stash around the place.
I image you plan on repainting it White and Blue. I see that Grey stripe down the center and it makes me think of leaving it there or a different color and at the back of the angle it up at a 45 degree angle so it ends at the rounded corner of the roof. At the front of the bus make the grey rounded instead of squared off. Maybe even make the stripe multi-color such as red, white, and blue. You could even put some stars in the stripe.
Thank you for posting. What an inspiration. You've made so many improvements all over that old bus, w/ vents, storage, access etc, it looks like a patch work quilt. But nothing a coat of nice Blue and White paint can't fix, but then no one will be able to see the improvements you made. You'll have to make that call. To me it looks great. You certainly mastered the engine cooling issue. Thanks again for sharing, I bid you success in your channel. ben/ michigan
thanks for the video and enjoy the ride
It's been a great project, thanks for sharing.
Excellent video Glenn :) also including bus videos updates and refurbished too ! Very Good Information shared on RUclips videos too and I like it !
Maybe a screen over the rear scoop to prevent ingesting a bird or two. It might help if you put in a belly pan with a scoop shaped front lip to pass more air into the engine bay would help with the overheating Getting 40 mph on those hills is awesome for a 70 year old engine and tranny. Unless you plan to regularly mountain climb you and your family should enjoy that bus for many years.
Fun video. I have driven the roads your testing on many times. Thanks, Boe
Awesome project. Old vehicle projects are never truly finished but good to see its on the road
That was fun thanks for taking us along on your adventures and for explaining what you’re doing and why
A lot of work and experiment. Very interesting. Good luck!
Thank you from Nagaland, India
Lol 😂, Love your videos!
Godspeed from the North West in Yakima Washington State 😇🕊️🙌🙏🏽✝️
I have thoroughly enjoyed these Bus videos. I would never have done the trip as you did, i thought it was way to risky. I have a 3 Y/O car, and I always go through everything before my family gets in before a trip, but I'm glad you made it.
awsome job on your bus lots of ingenuity and some stress but you did it ready for the road hope to see you out thereas im a trucker too plus shade tree fixer upper keep making videos ill keep watching and learning thank you
Just started my project, refitting my old boat. Thanks for your inspiring videos.
Another great video! I have found that battery acid eats through most rachet straps quite well, except for some cheap ones I found that are made out of polypropylene instead of nylon. Nylon is much stronger, but polypropylene is much more impervious to harsh chemicals like battery acid. But how does one tell if cheap second hand rachet straps are nylon or polypropylene, when the packaging was thrown away 5.7 owners ago? Fortunately, polypropylene floats, and regular nylon does not float, so just use the old Monty Python witch test and see if they float like a duck!
Glad you could figure the cooling system out more James! 🙂👍 Enjoyed the video my friend. Happy wrenching 🔧🔩
The metal shard getting caught like that has to be a one in a million chance
WOW time travel and back😆
Another great video! Love the having fun attitude! Wish I was as relaxed about trying to keep my classic TR7 V8 on the road!
I've really enjoyed the bus transformation. Look forward to seeing more when you get back to it!
Such a fantastic work.👏👏
I've really enjoyed the bus series. Thanks!
You do a great job with the videos. Im a kenworth guy and appreciate your efforts to get the bus back on the road
Love the channel, real world repairs. Thanks for sharing Paul (UK)
Well done you. Cant wait for the continuation.👍
I’d like to see an episode on the other motorhome in your yard that looks to be four wheel drive. (Excuse me if you already have and I missed it) I have a fascination acquiring or building an RV with four wheel drive someday.
The Scooter Key! That was as scary as all...in the family!! 😲 I am so glad you caught that. Have a dup made, if you can and don't have one. Even if you do. Check the bike, too! 😄
In the past when I’ve been fabricating sheet metal for odd shapes, I learned that cardboard is your friend. You can make a ton of mistakes on cardboard, change your design, add bends etc before you ever touch your sheet metal.
That Blue Flickering Mile-o-meter would drive me Nuts! Literally😂
Cool Bus!! And Fun to watch the progress.
It only flickers on camera.
Just finished the entire series. I can imagine you want a break from work, but I hope you do not quit using and maintaining it. A simple bug out vehicle that you know inside out like this one, is more valuable then a huge amount of money in the bank!
The adventure with the bus has been really interesting ,and I look forward to seeing it in future , you mentioned your business ,What is it as crafty as you are i would be hard put to guess
I have basically a job shop, manufacturing short production runs of whatever weird stuff a customer comes up with. Rarely do I ever make the same part twice in a row, so it keeps things interesting.
@@LowBuckGarageyou’re living the dream
This channel is fascinating this man is a genius
That whole back-to-the-future-past-present thing made my head hurt. If that scoop doesn’t move enough air through the engine compartment nothing will.
😂😂😂 “I’m supposed to have another battery there but I put a wood block there instead”😂😂😂😂
The job of the air-scoop is to transform air velocity into air pressure. Yours does the opposite. Search "subsonic air diffuser".
sorry about the paint but glad you nailed down the temps!
I do not know if it's still available, but years ago there was a liquid they put into cars' cooling system instead of the usual water and antifreeze, it was used on cars that were known for overheating but no matter what improvements were done they would overheat when driven hard, the liquid would keep the engines cool even when driven hard, I have not kept up with current events so do not know if it still exists but if it does it probably might be the answer for your bus, just a thought, not knowing its name is a great help I know, but someone must still remember it.
Water wetter? Spelling off I’m sure but that’s it
Watching from a bus depot in the UK. Really enjoying this project, you've made some real improvements to the Kenworth, great stuff. Looking forward to seeing it get an exterior repaint etc at some point in the future. Cheers
Long time no see. Great content 👍 guys. Thanks for sharing 😊.
I hope the bus has enough vertical clearance with the Dr. Seuss scoop. 👍
I would love to see all the doors be stainless steel that would look great
Oh man that was hilarious! Giant cucumber LOL. You should paint it like one 😂
A time travel video! Low Buck Garage meets This Old Tony...
Not only were the fan sensors on the wrong side of the radiator, they were on the wrong end as well.
They should be near the outlet. It won't be as high in temperature, but it will show how efficient the radiator is at the time.
Regardless of the inlet temp, if you have hot coolant coming out of the radiator, you need more airflow and want the fans on. If the outlet is cool, you don't need the fans.
That back to the future in the past today bit had me laughing hysterically 😂.
So nice when you know engine and tranny are primo sure frees up time for these projects
Thanks again 👍
Another interesting, informative, and fun video! You certainly handle the technical and fabrication tasks well! I'd like to build a rig like that, but on a smaller scale - like maybe a VW bus. Maybe shortened a little.
2 things. Have you cleaned the radiator? Also, a good block cleaner and system flush. They make expensive stuff, or you could steal some dishwashing detergent when the wife isn't looking. I appreciate the thrifty ness of the build and the blind eye given to distraction from the current mission at hand in videos
coil cleaner made for HVac ac systems would be better for this.
Great stuff!
Your camera on the airspeed meter is trying to record a moving object, and the visible rotation is going to be affected by the camera's frame rate. (See also: all the videos of cars where the tires look like they're running backwards.)
The digital readout of speed says 0 so it's actually stopped
The folding ebikes are very dangerous. I bought one here in the Philippines and really liked it at first but they have these sharp little bumps here that are created when someone crosses the road with a 1/2" water pipe and then covers the pipe with cement. I hit one that I wasn't prepared for, the front wheel left the ground and came down turned 90 degrees to the left, I think I only had o the hand on the handlebars, everything is a little blurry at that time. Anyway, the ebike did an end over end and I went over the handlebars and landed face first on the concrete and it happened so fast I didn't have time to put my hands out. It would not have happened like it did if he handlebars had the limited movement of a motorcycle but these things turn 360 degrees. I had a lot of injuries.
Love your videos, you should have a few million subs!
Dose the engine need a back flush .Great bus just keep plodding along you will get there in the end 👍.
When my kids were young and we were out with our travel trailer the kids were told that the one who bites their finger nails would have the job of dump duty, needless to say, neither child bit their nails.
we love the bus too
This bus series has been a real treat! But you get a comment for the unskippable add mention. Those things are the devil.
Gotta be in my top 5 channels. Maybe a jug of Lucas in the transmission?
Enjoying the resurrection
Hwy 70? Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico? Back in 92 on a bus ride to FLETC we had to pull over cause it would over heat!
The Bus look really nice !j
You funny you make me smile, I am trying to imagine what that buzz would look like painted like a cucumber I would love to see that,😂 and please if 30 to 40 mile-an-hour is your normal driving speed please please please don't vacation in Kentucky😅
Great vid , and problem solving, can't wait to see it painted up , are you going for original livery or a new colour scheme, thanks for sharing 👍💨💨
