That’s awesome. So you’re telling me that a man looked at Tetris and said “I want to make a game just as good as that one!” And now his game is debut side-by-side with Tetris? Good for him!
I hope so as well. Shame that they decided to rebrand the 1st few games as spinoffs of the Sonic and Kirby franchises, which prevented potential fans from finding out that the Puyo Puyo series existed, and getting hyped for future releases.
ShadowWolfTJC I've heard that Puyo Puyo Tetris did pretty well here so hopefully that means we'll get Chronicles and the other games. I just had this random video about Schezo and his antics in my recommendations and was intrigued and clicked. Now I'm in love with the series.
To be honest, if it wasn't for Tetris, I wouldn't have gotten the game. But now, Puyo Puyo Tetris has quickly became one of my favorite games of all time. Really hope for more Puyo Puyo games in the future!
Ninten dude789 Sega has become confident with releasing more Puyo Puyo games to the west after the success of PPT. Word of mouth, social media, and including Puyo Puyo in other Sega games have helped with that.
4:50 YO DAT ME ON THE LEFT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA But in all seriousness, this is actually a well made and informative video about puyo, so well done you guys!
YYYYYYYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo oshare is great make bones great again
I can't wrap my head around chain making but damn, Puyo is addictive as heck. It's like playing Tetris for the first time and trying to figure out Tetris chains.
I personally think it was a mistake to rebrand the 1st Puyo Puyo games as spinoff games of other franchises in the West. That effectively prevented potential Western fans of the series from generating enough hype for the series to take the Western world by storm, as it did with Japan.
My Mom who worked in Japan got this for me on my PS2 about 10 years ago. Don't know which version of Puyo Puyo it is since it was written in Japanese but it was a huge part of my childhood along with Klonoa 2. That being said, I never knew Klonoa 2's title until I rediscovered it last year since everything was in Japanese. I used to always not mention it since I didn't know what the game was called even though I loved it so much.
Nice video! I just expected you to mention that Puyo Puyo wasn't idealized from scratch as a puzzle game, but was actually a spin-off of a Japan-exclusive RPG series called Madou Monogatari, where puyos were one of the creatures you could find.
Agreed. Even though the characters aren't the main focus, many of the characters in puyo puyo originally come from that game, so even a little background would be nice.
For this reason, I think a conclusion is that USA and Europe people have rights to experience Puyo Puyo, Because the game is extremely competitive and fun! Don't get me wrong, it is absolutely fun to play, especially to remove away your stresses.
Have you heard of the Meteos franchise of puzzle games? Although it's a more recent franchise that was 1st introduced for the Nintendo DS, I wonder if the reason it's currently so obscure nowadays is due to a lack of memorable characters, like with Puyo Puyo?
I do wish Compile still made them. Best songs, characters and concepts. It's certainly more unique looking on the Sonic Team side of things, but that's not what I'm talking about. The story and more is what made me love them, especially being able to play the next Madou Monogatari game after each Puyo Puyo and seeing what assets they'd use next. The Compile games still sold more, too. Which makes me question how they ever went bankrupt.
You know what the Puyo Puyo franchise could've done (and probably still could do) as far as marketing outside of Japan is concerned? More cameos in other SEGA games, including Sonic All-Stars, and heck, even Super Smash Bros. In fact, I think the Western rebranding of the 1st few Puyo Puyo games as Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and Kirby's Avalanche was a poor move in the long-term, as that created confusion as to whether or not those games had a common identity (unless you happened to have played both of them, which is unlikely), effectively preventing the Puyo Puyo franchise from taking the Western world by storm, just as it did within Japan.
Y’know, Puyo Puyo Tetris is a great west localization But I think what really sold it was Sonic Mania’s debut of the mean bean machine as a boss battle. That was epic.
Puyo Puyo 2 on the Neo Geo Pocket Color was localized in the west as Puyo Pop. There's also Puyo Pop on the N-Gage. Puyo Puyo on the Game Gear was localized as Puzlow Kids but never released.
I have played a ton of PuyoPuyo games on IRC with the mIRC plugin. Holy shit i forgot about this game. I am sure i did not think about it for 10 years. Memories. Nice video
I suck at Puyo, but I keep getting drawn back to the game because I love its colorful cast, graphics, and it's groovy music. It's so unique, charming and fun (chain reactions especially). Wish me luck, I'm trying to learn the game 😄 (struggling with the Blocking Method currently).
Well, thanks for this great history video. I have always wondered why this series never caught on here like it did in Japan. I guess competitive puzzle games don't work as well in appeal factor? :/ Idk. Well still, great video man.
Well it wasn't released in the west as anything other than spinoffs for other franchises (Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Kirby's Avalanche, etc.) for a loooooong time, so it didn't have any time to catch on. Tetris actually caught on pretty well, so I don't think it has to do with being a Puzzle game.
To me, the first Puyo-like game I saw was back in 1997-8 or so with an indie PC game called (I think) "Critmass". At the time, the only game I could compare it to was Dr.Mario but it was much more dynamic and faster paced (even the timed demo supported up to 4 players with decent AI levels), even ignoring the special tiles.
I live in China, and several years ago I used to play a game that is similar to puyopuyo online for a while. I think the game is pretty close to puyopuyo in the rule, except one key difference: you send colored blocks rather than colorless blocks to your opponent. (But I think those blocks are more similar to the germs in Dr Mario that, unlike the block you drop, you have to drop new block onto it in order to "ignite" it.) And you can choose different "attack pattern" that, I kinda forgot what they do besides deciding the block pattern you send to your opponent. There's even an "all-red" pattern that makes all the block you send red, super risky but there's some neat effect. I forgot what effect it has, but if I remembered correctly it would make you send way more blocks than usual, which is useful if you are good at setting up long chains that can blow your opponent in one shot, I guess? If that's the case it would be more like "all or nothing" kind of deal XD Not sure if that game is still online though, but, the chance is still high, I guess? I haven't played competitive puzzle games for years.
Now all we need is Arle as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 6 (as a puzzle rep (Dr. Mario doesn’t count since he’s just a reskin or Mario) and as the third Sega rep other than Sonic and Bayonetta).
My idea for Arle’s Classic Mode route: Puyo Puyo Fever! All of her opponents represent her opponents in the Puyo Puyo series. Final boss: Dracula from Castlevania (representing Satan/the Dark Prince)
Just got done playing puyo puyo 1, then ceruoise enough to look it up if they made more games of it knowing theres a ps4 game of puyo puyo all ready out...
Puyo puyo Tetris isn't the first us localization for puyo puyo the first localization for puyo puyo in the us with the name puyo puyo was probably in the game hatsune miku project mirai dx which was released in the us Japan and Europe in 2015 or 2014. It's the game i know that has puyo puyo that's more recent
That’s awesome.
So you’re telling me that a man looked at Tetris and said “I want to make a game just as good as that one!”
And now his game is debut side-by-side with Tetris?
Good for him!
I hope the series stays alive in the west
I hope so as well. Shame that they decided to rebrand the 1st few games as spinoffs of the Sonic and Kirby franchises, which prevented potential fans from finding out that the Puyo Puyo series existed, and getting hyped for future releases.

same, puyo pop fever was my childhood
Same. But $30/$40 is a high price tag for a puzzle game in my opinion. It should be $20 like the PC version!
I agree,I find myself with no ploblem paying 20 for the game, but 40 is way too much.
Ninten dude789 i totally agree. I’ve always been fan of Puyo, but combining it with Tetris was GENIOUS! Endless fun to be had every day!
Same lol
im too broke to buy ppt T-T

I can't wrap my head around chain making but damn, Puyo is addictive as heck. It's like playing Tetris for the first time and trying to figure out Tetris chains.
FarCritical Seeing how Tetris players are freaking out because they've never seen T spins, I think they're experiencing that feeling too.
Always nice when Kirby's Avalanche is actually mentioned next to Puyo and Mean Bean Machine!
I personally think it was a mistake to rebrand the 1st Puyo Puyo games as spinoff games of other franchises in the West. That effectively prevented potential Western fans of the series from generating enough hype for the series to take the Western world by storm, as it did with Japan.
Bobopatch I really enjoyed Kirby's avalanche that was like my childhood
3:05 The crowd saying the chains XD

This is a nice video, but what about the characters? I feel like many people are also into Puyo for it's hilarious and endearing characters...
Have you heard of the Meteos franchise of puzzle games? Although it's a more recent franchise that was 1st introduced for the Nintendo DS, I wonder if the reason it's currently so obscure nowadays is due to a lack of memorable characters, like with Puyo Puyo?

Nice video guys!
Omg I love you!
Even after three years, that like number is still NICE
I do wish Compile still made them. Best songs, characters and concepts. It's certainly more unique looking on the Sonic Team side of things, but that's not what I'm talking about.

The Compile games still sold more, too. Which makes me question how they ever went bankrupt.
a slightly more serious modern puyo would be interesting but... S H I G U
Basically they had too much ambition (and projects) than they could handle
sig overrated amiti underrated
You know what the Puyo Puyo franchise could've done (and probably still could do) as far as marketing outside of Japan is concerned? Just like Fire Emblem! SEGA should definitely do something like that.
Puyo appear in the sega superstars games and in the japanense version of sonic all stars racing transformed.
Puyo Puyo also appeared in Phantasy Star Online and Universe
This is a nice video. I'm going to link this video to those who don't know or play Puyo Puyo.
I'm sure there will be many people who will be learning how to play Puyo and also good video Puyo Nexus
There's a surreal feeling to hearing a crowd chanting puyo's chains, but it's pretty neat lol
I thought it was called "Offsetting" instead of "Neutralizing"
Call it whatever. Offsetting is better though.
or it could simply be defending/countering
Sodisna it was called offsetting in puyo pop fever
I thought it was called "blocking"
2:04 Suketoudara's face makes me laugh
“Tetris is at a slight disadvantage”
I feel like the beginning of the video should have had a mention about Puyo Puyo being a spin-off of Madou Monogatari.
Y’know, Puyo Puyo Tetris is a great west localization
But I think what really sold it was Sonic Mania’s debut of the mean bean machine as a boss battle. That was epic.
I got the Puyo Puyo Tetris hoping I'd be able to appreciate Puyo Puyo more. It did not disappoint!
Puyo Puyo 2 on the Neo Geo Pocket Color was localized in the west as Puyo Pop.
There's also Puyo Pop on the N-Gage.
Puyo Puyo on the Game Gear was localized as Puzlow Kids but never released.
Puzlow Kids WAS released. Though, it could only be played if inserting the original cartdrige in a American/European Game Gear.
No mention of Candy Crisis?
To be fair, that's one of the more obscure remakes
im patreon hi
Or PuzlowKids
I have played a ton of PuyoPuyo games on IRC with the mIRC plugin. Holy shit i forgot about this game. I am sure i did not think about it for 10 years. Memories. Nice video
Good job on explaining the series
Puyo Puyo is the home of Waifu Draco
I suck at Puyo, but I keep getting drawn back to the game because I love its colorful cast, graphics, and it's groovy music. It's so unique, charming and fun (chain reactions especially).
Wish me luck, I'm trying to learn the game 😄 (struggling with the Blocking Method currently).
This was a great introduction to this series.
Been a long time lurker. Happy to see this upload.
Well, thanks for this great history video. I have always wondered why this series never caught on here like it did in Japan. I guess competitive puzzle games don't work as well in appeal factor? :/ Idk. Well still, great video man.

Tetris actually caught on pretty well, so I don't think it has to do with being a Puzzle game.
@@NZsaltz and then when it did get released as puyo pop they stopped after puyo fever 1
I love Puyo Puyo!
Just wanted to say thanks for this video. You did a great job making it. 👍
Great overview, I am going to send this to some people I know who don't get this game but hear me talk about it all the time.
I used to play this unknowingly~ I had a Sega Plug and Play with Dr.Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine and stuff like Flicky and Golden Axe
In my opinion puyopuyo is better and more fun than tetris
Sad that it's not popular outside of Japan.
"Maybe half of you recognize these blobs, or seen them under a different name."
Um... Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine?
Victor Dennis He mentioned it.
Puyo Pop Fever was my childhood!
I live in China, and several years ago I used to play a game that is similar to puyopuyo online for a while.
I think the game is pretty close to puyopuyo in the rule, except one key difference: you send colored blocks rather than colorless blocks to your opponent. Not sure if that game is still online though, but, the chance is still high, I guess? I haven't played competitive puzzle games for years.
Sounds more like Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo by that description. The 'all red' set is Dan's, for example.
Puyo puyo never fails to piss me off. Good thing it's so damn fun.
there was a puyo puyo minigame in the hatsune miku project mirai dx game
Husky Mirai And recently, Sonic Mania.
That's how I got into the series
Now all we need is Arle as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 6 (as a puzzle rep (Dr. Mario doesn’t count since he’s just a reskin or Mario) and as the third Sega rep other than Sonic and Bayonetta).
My idea for Arle’s Classic Mode route:
Puyo Puyo Fever!
All of her opponents represent her opponents in the Puyo Puyo series.
Final boss: Dracula from Castlevania (representing Satan/the Dark Prince)
Now I’m like addicted to PPT but I still play mean bean every so often
What was the music that played last in the video? It reminded me of "Faceoff in Puyopuyo World! ~ Magical Confrontation!"
We need more puyo games in the west
Please do not hurt the baby Draco, she does her best. (aka playing Puyo on the same level a westerner does for the first time)
I love Puyo Puyo
I have never seen those blobs (puyos) until Puyo Puyo Tetris
BAYOEN!! - Everyone at the contest
i hope this game makes the puzzle scene bigger in the u.s.
fun fact:
puyo puyo was also a minigame in hatsune miku project mirai dx!
Did you know that you can spam infinite T-Spin clicks if you have a turbo (A) or (B) button masher?
Literally encountered this bug right off the bat: puyo puyo tetris is-puyo puyo tetris
0/10 didnt mention that puyo puyo is actually a spinoff of the series madou monogatari /s
But seriously it would be better if they did mention it. That would explain the rebranding in the 90s.
If Puyo Puyo had another crossover, I think It should be with Mario.
puyo puyo X dr mario would genuinely be cool
I remember the kirby poyo poyo one.
What PuyoPuyo songs are playing in the background? I can only recognise the mean bean machine song
Wait, Does that mean, Hold on... Puyo Puyo Tetris is Actually the SECOND game to be released in English, after Puyo Pop Fever.
3rd, at the very least. Probably 4th if you're counting MBM/KA as Puyo Puyo 1.
There are more version has English, though. However, they're makes a English translation of PP7 for Nintendo DS.
No mention of how alot of the characters actually originate from a different series entirely ok
oh wait this is the other version of Sega vs nientendo

Is it sad i got introduced to Puyo Puyo from Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine?
Aye ya forgot to mention that Tsu did came to the west but in a compilation known as Sega 3D Classics on the 3DS. It wasn't translated much.
