    How old was your son when you started OM K and now that you're in the upper grades, did you feel like you'd change anything about that timing?

    • @howweschool
      @howweschool  Год назад +1

      Hello! He was 5 years old when we started OM K. Looking back the things I probably would change would be to not add in so many extra supplements in the early years and I probably would’ve stretched K for two years. My son needs a lot of repetition when learning and I think slowing down and repeating would’ve helped him. My sister has two in the younger years doing OM and she doesn’t supplement with extras and I can see how it makes their early years so much easier and more focused on the work that they’re already doing with OM.
      I hope that helps.

      @@howweschool thank you! Aside from slowing down kinder, do you think there are things/topics in the older grades that may have gone more smoothly if he were a year older? I’m asking because I know Waldorf curriculum usually is written with the idea that kids are a year older than public school at each grade level. I’m pretty confident my son would enjoy K at 5 this year, but I’m not so confident he will enjoy grade 1 at 6 and the independence of grade 4 at age 9 and so on.

      @@simplycece I have to say the topics have been fine. As a matter of fact, this year social studies and science have been great for him! Language arts and math have both been relatively easy for him this year too. As of now in our homeschool I haven’t felt like any topics haven’t gone over smoothly for him. I don’t know if that’ll change as we go on but so far that hasn’t been an issue. OM is definitely meant to be started at age 6 but I think 1st grade at 7 years old would’ve been just a little too slow for my child and he’s not advanced or gifted, I’d say he’s just right on track. If I were to ever feel it was too much at some point we would probably repeat a year.

    I find Oak Meadow really interesting, but I struggle with the price of it. It also seems like the prices increase with each grade level. I would love to hear your thoughts on the overall value of the curriculum. In your opinion is it worth the price for what you get and what it covers? Or do you find it needs additional supplements.

    • @howweschool
      @howweschool  Год назад +2

      Yes, the price definitely increases with the years! Since I started back in kinder and it’s worked for us I’ve kept up with it. It’s all we use for our math and it’s our main curriculum for all our other subjects.
      I like to pull from other resources to fill any areas that I feel there are gaps. We do really like the curriculum and the way you can tailor it to your child. Like every other curriculum I’ve tried there are some things you just need to supplement (imo)! I haven’t found one curriculum I find to cover everything I want to have covered. My son also really loves Oak Meadow and the freedom to choose his assignments and the days he’ll do his work. The way things are written he tends to really understand them and is able to work independently quite often. So for us, it has been worth it. The things I supplement with have been Curiosity Chronicles (we started using it for fun), fix-it grammar, and sometimes Evan Moor (for review). We also use Lightning Literature but because my son enjoys it, not as a supplement. I am considering adding IEW structure and style mainly because composition is the area I do feel is lacking and my son is struggling in. They have a lot of writing assignments but not enough instruction on writing for us.
      In the older years you can just purchase certain subjects which can make it cheaper and easier to use just what works for you and your child.

      @@howweschool thanks for your input! I think down the road I might incorporate an individual unit to get a feel for it.

      Hello! I can’t sell them as I pass them along to my sister for her children which she homeschools as well. Sorry.
