    I hope you understand that this horse is exhibiting a pain response. Throughout the entire video she is extremely uncomfortable. She's not being a brat she's telling you she's in pain. When she stops kicking out she never did buck and starts going into her canter you can she her pain threshold is pushed too far and she tries to relieve it the only way she knows how. It makes me very sad that you cannot recognize her pain. If she were my horse I would have a chiropractor out asap. I wouldn't ride her until the issue is resolved. You could be making things worse by riding her. 2 months on break is no reason for her behavior.

    What worries me greatly Is that every person has failed to see how lame the horse is behind..no offence meant to the rider. I truly think this horse has kissing spine. That isn't high spirited bucks, the horse would move forward...the bucks are pain related. Having said that well sat.

    • @evalynblight5738
      @evalynblight5738 6 лет назад +22

      She's probably stiff on the hind because she's lost so much muscle in the time she's had off so her muscles just need to be built back up agian and she's just loosening and re building them again. :) However on the right rein in canter it does look a bit off :/

      My horse had thrown her back out and while she didn't react with bucks she did kick out at times and was very twitchy and fussy whenever she had my heavier saddle on. English, barrel, and no saddle were my only option for months.

      That was actually the first thing I noticed... Gait is off, balance is off, horse is not moving forward, but constantly backing off and trying not to work - and the way the mare grunts each time she kicks... I’d get her checked by vet and propably also chiropractor depending on what the vet says....

  • @livycharp5927
    @livycharp5927 7 лет назад +716

    Something seems to be off. I would check with the vet. Also if she hasn't been ridden in 2 months try doing ground work and lunging to see how she reacts. Doing groundwork can have a better effect which leads to a good experience, instead of jumping on and getting no were on her back. If it's not getting any better get off and go back to basics with her.

Because I've ridden horses, geldings and mares, after they've had much longer than a 2 month break from riding, and none of them acted nearly the same as this one. If a horse hasn't been ridden in a while, depending on how well they are trained and what their personality and manners are, a horse could have lot's of energy built up, or the horse could act just lazy. Ok but that won't stop her from bucking. It doesn't matter whether the horse's head is to the left the right or down, it still has the ability to swing its hind end high to buck. If it's head is up it's less likely to buck big or even buck at all because it can't properly swing it's hind end out

If you have eyes, it’s quite noticeable by watching that the mouth is in an uncomfortable state. This lady rarely releases and relaxes her reins. As a past idiot English rider I’ve made the mistake of believing a bit was even needed for my horses and did the exact same thing she did and got the worst performance out of my horses. Hope after all the comments regarding pain, you have done the right thing and had her checked by a vet and even as far as X-Rays! All her actions are pain response, her hind legs are stiff and not swinging through at all, especially in the canter. Also the bit yanking is not needed, push her forward as to save her mouth. Even the horrible tail swishing is a clear indication of pain and being uncomfortable. The only reason she calmed at the end is because she was too tired and tired of trying to tell you she is in pain. Therefor submitted to it and prayed for the ride to be over!
    PS. For future "sassy horses"..... If a horse is off for 2 months. walk and trot only for short periods. For every day they are out of work.... they need the exact same amount of days to recover the loss of fitness, also stops them from injuring themselves and being hurt like this :)

    can we just take a look at how the horse is gaping in the mouth, and every time he tried to get her off, she pulled even more which causes more pain and more bucking. Not saying she is a bad person but just mentioning the problem. try to ride her with a halter and see if she then bucks. If the horse then bucks, I haven't said anything
    try not to sit in the back of the saddle, that puts more pressure on the back of the horse.

      Raty7145 yea but eventually she’ll get tired of speeding and realize that the way to get out of having to run is to stop bucking. Asking her to stop only rewards her for bucking and pulling can make her more agitated. But I really love this girls seat.

      Mia Sleeman That's exactly what I learned. Force a horse that shows of any kind of unwanted behavior to run til it's tired ans behaves nicely
      That's basically the idea of putting a school horse on the longe before a beginner rides a lesson on it.

    Well done for staying calm and on the horse and not freaking out like most people. I recommend getting rid of the big completely when you ride as it causes a lot of pain and damage to the horse which is unnecessary. Also instead of patting stroke it's been shown horses like that more.

      Blizzard Kinz that is exactly the issue.if the horse hasnt been ridden in a long time their stiffles can get quite still. By the way the horse is reacting and moving she or he is definately stiff. You also cant jump on a horse and make them do more than simple ground work after so much of a long time. This strains their muscles just like humans. Not to be rude or disrespectful but we are all just giving pointers for success. Thank u

    • @TheCR1707
      @TheCR1707 6 лет назад

      There's no being 'gentle with your hands' when using a bit. Pain and discomfort is pain and discomfort, period. Ever had braces? Now imagine being pulled on by those braces all around- the mouth is one of the most sensitive parts of the body. Metal or even rubber does NOT belong there. Bits were designed purposefully to control horses through pain and by breaking the horse and taking the spirit out of them. I would NEVER want to be apart of that- everyone should learn to better connect with their horse by going bit-less. It's not hard.

    • @magicalcarlo7639
      @magicalcarlo7639 6 лет назад

      CMR yes but some people haven’t researched things about the bit and I have tried to tell someone not use the bit and they got really angry. I don’t want to create any negativity towards the person who thinks it’s right even though it’s not. Instead of putting a negative comment towards the person you could suggest bitless doesn’t mean they are going to ride bitless so giving tips to lead in the path of bitless is better than encouraging pulling back on the bit and saying good good for ripping the horses mouth off.

    • @TheCR1707
      @TheCR1707 6 лет назад

      @Magical Carlo Yeah, but the girl in this video obviously knows that the bit is bad from all these comments. She doesn't even feel bad enough about it to take the video down. Therefore, I don't really care if I make her angry- she knows this is wrong. She deserves to feel guilty- if the horse is lucky that feeling of guilt will make her stop.

    For all you people saying she is holding the bit too tight clearly have NEVER ridden a horse protesting in bucking! if you LET the horses reins go slack the head will go down to the ground and the buck will be a lot higher and probably dismounting the rider, she did VERY well holding the head hence the small bucks and not the violent ones you usually see. Her head bobbing up and down is not in discomfort, its her head trying to swing to to ground to allow a larger buck but the rider is disallowing it. She is protesting, being lazy, I've ridden horses like this, if you get off they win and they will actually buck on rides knowing this, if you stay on and let them know you are not getting off until you finish, they will eventually give up , one horse i used to ride used to drop her shoulder to throw riders off when transitioning into canter as a protest, many finished the lesson and she won.

    I'm 58 and am mobility challenged and all four of my horses can sit for much more than two months without acting like this. I mean because I lack confidence, after two months I might put them in the round pen or on a lunge line for five minutes just to make sure their mind is in the right place, but I would not anticipate one of mine acting like this after two months off. Acknowledging every horse is different, every rider is different and every combination of the two is different, without knowing this duo I would think the horse is still relatively green, however old it might be. It's not bucking because it's a mare, and it's probably not bucking because of the bit. Maybe some soreness somewhere, but my personal opinion is the horse is still green to some degree or it has an attitude in general, perhaps from being allowed to get away with this stuff under saddle before. Kudos to the rider for staying on and not getting angry and allowing emotion to rule; I am NOT a trainer and could not and would not even try to ride a horse like this.

    I know this was from a year ago, but someone has to stop this disgusting thing... the mare keeps on repeating this action because she’s being popped in the mouth by this bit and the way you Are pulling your rains. You don’t do that and you are very lucky she didn’t rear up, but if I was the horse I would have. As an experienced rider you should ask someone else to train your horse because by the looks of it you don’t know very much about how to treat your horse, ride or what to do when this happens. One method would NOT BE YANKING ON THE HORSES MOUTH, but holding the main and squeeze to tell the horse to keep on moving. This is an action that would help you and the horse from getting hurt, and also it is reliable because the horse doesn’t have enough time to think of what to do next. All in all this is disgusting, cruel and evil to the horse... Think before you post something on social media or in this case RUclips... for which it might lead for you to have haters and attacker’s. River got to the point of being ridden tackless before they discovered a conformation problem and she was retired. Laurens other horse, Boo, has shown tackless. Please watch some of her other videos, she is a great rider who stays calm and works with the horse. As the description says, the mare had not been worked for 2 months. Ground work before hand may have helped, but they may have already done ground work. These are just clips, you dont see the whole day. Is the horse sassy, or is she reacting to you yanking on the bit? Watch the video and you can see plain as day the poor horse is opening her mouth and raising/shaking her head while her ears and back. It's because you have those reins pulled so tight they're digging into her jaw and causing pain. Every bit of body language this mare is showing is reacting to the pain in her mouth. Eventually after the 32 kicks she gave while trying to tell you thay you were hurting her, she gave up and just started accepting the pain.
    I guarantee that if you loosened your grip on the reins, or better yet trained her to be able to ride bitless, her sassy tendencies would disappear.
    Poor horse.

      ... Guys, the bucks were from a chiropractic/saddle problem, not from the bit. To the person who suggested a simple snaffle, I'm pretty sure the french-link is actually softer as it has the extra joint in it so it doesn't go to as sharp an angle as a single-jointed snaffle. Yes, I agree, it does look like the rider is using the reins for balance a little too much and somewhat yanking on them when the horse bucks, and I don't agree with the riders opinion that she was fine with what she was doing with those reins, but this behaviour is certainly more typical of a horse having back problems. The better question however, is whether the rider knew about the back/ saddle issues before or after this ride? What was the reason the horse was off for two months?

    Tip: Instead of yanking on her mouth when she bucks, push on with your legs and seat. yanking her will annoy her more. For the length of time out of action, she should have been lunged with extra groundwork beforehand. There's a lack of basics here. She's definitely not being mareish, shes agitated. Your seat needs to be established also proved by your leaning forward and need to yank the reins, you'll lose balance otherwise. I think a better thing for the both of you is to revisit the scaled of training and the basics of riding.

    • @Amanda-pb9ry
      @Amanda-pb9ry 6 лет назад

      OMG I was saying this as I was watching. A horse not worked for two months needs to start with ground work. It gets them back into that working mind a bit better. Also, yes, she was leaning forward quite a bit. I'd buck if I were that horse. You don't run a marathon overnight. You need to warm up and train for weeks before you do it. Take that same formula and apply it to riding. A top tier dressage school would never do this on such an out of shape horse because it can hurt the horse and hurt the relationship and trust you build with it.

    Those who disagree are wrong. She is pulling on the reins by keeping the mares head close to her chest. In the wild a mare would not hold her neck like that because it strains the muscles in their neck. Everyone thinks horses are some big tough animal that can handle so much when in reality they are the most sensitive animal in captivity. When you pat a horse with your hand. They feel every inch of your hand and and exactly where you are laying it. Horses also have sensitive mouths so a bit pulling their head down in a uncomfortable position is gonna get bucks and sassy attitude. Learn actual facts before you non equestrians start throwing your damn opinions around. You all are so arrogant and don't do any research before blasting your mouth all over.

    My mare gets to were she will stand there and when I cluck, kick ( I don't where spurs), or even tap her with the whip she kicks back. and sometimes shell crow hop. I don't know anything else to do with her, I bought her as a trail horse and trained her on poles. so she was running perfect last month but now all of a sudden she is all sass. she no longer uses her brain she just reacts to everything. she is fine and acts normal when she isn't being ridden though. sometimes is she won't go forward shell either back up or I'll pull her to a side and shell keep turning. and she pins her ears back though. Help? advice?

      Maddie Davis have you gotten new tack if so dont use a bit that will hurt a horses mouth cause in this video im sure they are which is horse abuse to use a non wanted bit, but you can just keep her halter on and use lead ropes as reigns she probably wont fight with you then

      I know this is an old comment and hopefully you've got her sorted out, but if not hopefully this helps. Her doing this only when she's ridden sounds like a saddle fit issue. I went through the horrors of bad saddle fit with my last mare. She was a 16.3hh PaintxTB who could really muscle you around when she was upset. She had been ridden as a lesson horse for years before I got her, until they stopped using her because she was "too dangerous". The saddle hurt so much that she would balk at any gait and just stop dead, or she would buck until the rider came off and the pain lessened. I bought her off the barn for a whopping $120 (she was just taking up space) and began her retraining. We ended up solving her *many* problems under saddle with groundwork. Lots and lots of it. Lunging, liberty, yielding forequarters and hindquarters, backing up, flexing, moving sideways-you name it, we did it. Then we translated that to saddle work-flexing with the bit, moving her hindquarters and forequarters with only my leg, spinning tight circles without fuss, etc. It was so I could move her feet under saddle when she got in a snit like your mare is. She wanted to back up for ten feet like a jerk? Fine. But she'll have to do it while she's zigzagging her butt back and forth (I'd move her butt left, then right, repeat). Then when I felt she was listening to me and not her own rebellious mind, we'd go forward like nothing ever happened. If she decided she wanted to stop dead and not move for an hour (no matter if you kicked, whipped, yelled, cropped, chased her with a lunge whip, hell my trainer once tossed a large beach ball at her ass to make her move forward to no avail), then we'd do lots of flexing, leg yielding, and circles. She was too proccupied with circling to notice that she was, in fact, moving forward and when she was listening we'd straighten out and continue on.
      It's slow going. If you've ruled out pain (always the first thing you check!) then it just boils down to respect and a way to get her out of that "I'm-Right-And-You're-The-Human-So-You-Must-Be-Wrong" mindset. Make her acting out moments hard, preocuppying work. No horse wants to back up in zigzaggy circles when walking on is much easier. Once they figure that out, your life is easier. It's only achievable through gaining her respect and attention on the ground, though. If she can't listen to you on the ground (100% listening, not that half-attention junk that most give you at first) then she won't listen to you under saddle. You cannot establish who's boss in the saddle. She's bigger, stronger, and bitchier than you. Like you said, whipping her just pisses her off and works her up even more. When she gets in a Mood, work her ass until she decides that whatever she was upset about is awful and continuing on is much easier than throwing a fit and having to work double time.

    • @my_bay_jed5509
      @my_bay_jed5509 7 лет назад +1

      Tea clearly you know nothing about horses either. The mare definitely isn't in pain. She's just come back from a two month break and you expect her to be perfect!? What have you ridden all your life, school ponies? Because in reality you don't just get back on a fresh horse after two months and it's perfect. She doesn't look like she's in pain she looks fine. She's bucking because she's fresh and quite clearly wats to run and get the rider off her, which in turn, is doing a very good job sitting all these bucks and you're here being a bitch about it when you'd fall off if that horse even lifted its back legs off the ground 5cm.

      Alexis Lewis luick knows what she talking about I agree with her . If you watch her tail and the mouth . The rider is clearly pulling on the horses mouth way to much . The tail is move way to much. I do ride horses and show . I know the horse wasn't be riden by the owner or trianer for 2 months .But my opinion is that she need to get after that horse , change the bit read the horse mind .

    • @The99smileyface99

      my_Bay_Jed.
      First of all, you think you can tell my horse knowledge bc i disagree with you. Insulting bc someone disagrees is pretty lowkey.
      no. I don´t expect her to be perfect. I expect the rider to consider her mare not being ridden in two. months. You have to start slower, not ask for too much, so the horse can give you what you want. Asking her to bend and hold her head so soon in all gaites is a lot to ask for. Even if it wasn't´t, it doesn't change the fact that this horse is showing several signs of discomfort and pain. These is a REASON she wants her rider off so bad. Why WOUDNT she be in pain when asked of such things in two months. Its like you doing a split, then waiting two months and have someone sit on you so you could do it, even though you yelled out your pain.
      Yes, sometimes you have to discipline your horse, but maybe instead of "showing them who´s boss" you could learn a little about heard behaviour and horse psycology and PROVE yourself a good leader instead?
      Now a little horse knowledge 101 from "someone who´s ridden school ponies all her life (you obviously know me better than i do)"... swishing tail, pinning ears, open mouth are ALL signs of discomfort. Open mouth combined with a bit is a very obvious sign of pain and discomfort, add the tight rains and it should have been a freaking neon sign.
      Now look very closely. When the mare kicks, the rider gives her rain, even if it is only for a second. When she kicks multiple times, the rider doesn't´t give rain right away, but she continues to kick until she does. That is release. So you teach the horse that if she kicks, the bit won't hurt as much, and she is looking for release because she´s in pain. Why don´t you want to see that? Why doesn't´t riders want to admit what is right in front of them?
      exhibit A. 0.28 ish. Horse kicks, rain release, she lowers her head and relaxes for a tiny seconds until -> rain tightsens and she trows her head up with an open mouth, swishing tail, pinning ears "OUCH! I just did what you asked. You give me release when i kick, and pull on my mouth when walk" . You can find the rest of the alphabet looking through the video.
      Of course no one wants to hurt their horse bc we love our horses. But if you admit to your mistake, you can change your ways to the better. If you close your eyes you´ll keep on hurting your horse and make the same mistakes. Horses are forgiving!

    Just saying this is my opinion but I think that we should not ride with bits because would you like to have a metal piece in your mouth that can give you blisters and yanks on you and pinches your tongue or would you rather have something that pulls on your face and tells you where to go just like a halter so I don’t get why people don’t like Hackamore‘s because their exact same thing as a freaking halter so I think that everybody should use a Hackamore because it’s just like a halter and everybody’s OK with using a halter bits were meant for the olden days because the horses had to listen in the war and other things because the farmers needed them now we don’t use horses for that kind of stuff so maybe we should think of a new and more humane way Way to ride horses please listen to this and think about everything

    • @ellakivioja8601
      @ellakivioja8601 6 лет назад +16

      iloulou mitchell A hackamore is actually really sharp and puts a lot of pressure on the horse’s face. And they are very sensitive and has gotten a lot of nerves there.
      Misuse of a hackamore causes pain (on the nose and jaw), damage to the cartilage on the nose or it can even break the nose bone. So it’s wrong saying it’s nicer than bit or like a halter cause it can be really harsh. However just like with bits, the riders hands is what it depends on. In the hands of a experienced rider that knows what she/he is doing it can be a lot nicer for the horse. It can also be the other way around. The same goes for a “weak” bit like a snaffle. It can be really harsh if the rider has a hard hand and pull the reins. The bit and hackamores strength depends on the rider.

      yup xx I don’t mean that bit is nicer in any way. What I mean is that it’s wrong to say that a Hackamore is nicer than a bit cause it can cause a lot of pain. Bitless however in form of Sidepull or a halter is nicer for the horse.

      I.Hate.That.Escuse. Tell me this. If you put a bit in your mouth and slightly pull, does it hurt? No. If you yank does it hurt? Yes. Simple as that. It all comes down to how the rider uses the equipment. And if the bit is giving the horse blisters? They have special bit protectors just for that.

    Lunge her first, check the saddle and stuff (she seems irritated, not sassy) and have a chiropractor check her over. and also loosen your reins, constant pressure on the bit like that is not good. It can cause a soft, easy-mouthed horse to go hard. Horses have SUPER sensitive mouths, it doesn't take a lot for them to get overwhelmed with the pain and just shut down or go into fight mode. It can also cause them to be very anxious or crabby when being ridden, and also can make them hard to catch.

    Okay. You did very well staying with her and did the right thing in not letting her get her head down (I had a mare that concussed me after I pulled her out of the pasture and decided to ride her). She did seem to have an excessive amount of tail swishing however, that could just be her being irritated at having been pulled out of the pasture after being off for two months. For you people claiming that the bit is hurting the horse, my mare concussed me after being off for an extended period of time. I was riding her in a hack. So its not necessarily the bits fault. Could the rider use a lighter hand? Sure. But Im sure we have all been there. Hell, Im just now transitioning to English from barrel racing (call me an animal abuser for being in rodeo, I dare you), and my trainer now is constantly telling me to lighten up my hands. That doesn't mean this girl did anything wrong. As a matter of fact, she did the best she could with what she had. So leave her alone, and go shove your opinion and/or biased facts that you had to dig for on Google or Wiki to someone who actually cares.

    They say you can tell a gelding what to do but you have to ask a mare. This was my mare, if she didn’t want to play you were toast. Miss her so much though. RIP Biscuit.
