I was introduced to 10 minute Bible hour by my dad and then proceeded to binge listen to the entirety of podcast in a matter of 3 months. While I myself will fully admit to being a Christian who agrees with Matt and many of his views, what I appreciate most is his ability to engage with those who might be outside of his "in group" and not only treat them with the respect and dignity that any human deserves, but welcome them and THANK them for taking the time to try and relate to a viewpoint that they might not agree with. Than you so much Matt, for bringing such a formidable book to the general populace and presenting it in the way it was meant to be consumed; by curious people who might not know all the stuff, but are willing to take a listen, and thank you even more for respecting and loving them as humans, even if after hearing what you have to say they ultimately disagree with the conclusions you have come to.
1. Getting plundered by women is the ultimate humiliation, unrepeated in the ancient world to my knowledge. 2. No stone monuments, but myriad Biblical references to God's mighty hand taking His people from Egypt. Also, still celebrated in the Seder meal today. 3. Was hoping you'd explore the possibility that the gold they plundered wound up in the golden calf.
This was a banger! On top of the theology and history of this being super interesting, this video held my attention really well and was very engaging. The whole bit about being offended by an ancient god destroying people's manhood was hilarious. I really liked the format of this, and I learned a lot from the content.
Always love your stuff, it really makes me think. I wrote a short sermon once on this same passage in Exodus. However I talked about how they walked out into to the wilderness with just today's bread and seemingly useless trinkets. That in the natural it made no sense to set out equipped like that. I mean who sets out to carry dolphin skins into the desert. But God was faithful to meet their daily needs. Their ministry was to carry the makings of His Tabernacle even if they didn't know it at the time. Because our lives are not about our needs but His glory and worship. I love in this short passage there are so many stories to tell from so different angles. Thank you for thoughtfulness and loving insights into the Word. I love that you so show real empathy to people in the passage, and don't fall into the trap of treating them like characters in a fairy tale. Huge fan of your ministry, brother.

I grew up in a Christian home and still consider myself Christian, but the way I think about specific things has changed over the years and in some ways are very different than the more, shall we say, "traditionally conservative" beliefs of my family, and it makes me feel more like a black sheep than I have previously. Your videos are helping me understand my faith better, and I want to thank you for that.

Great video, Matt--love the mental calisthenics. I have often wondered why there is the assumption that the death of the Egyptian firstborn means only babies. A 50-year-old, 80-year-old, etc. can also be a firstborn. Is there something about the Hebrew word that implies baby/child?
Even a modern nation-state would try to cover up any evidence of such a thing happening. There is also the fact that Egypt 4k-5k years ago didn't record everything in stone. They already had papyrus, and most of that wouldn't have survived to today.
It’s great to see that out of this plundering, God asked the people in Ex 25:1-9 to give an offering in order to build the tabernacle. So not only He humiliated the Egyptians by taking all their goods, but provided the materials for His own dwelling place. He's got everything under control!
If you're doing Old Testament, I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on Ecclesiastes! I know you said you have more planned for Exodus, but do you have any plans to tackle the wisdom books?
What's interesting about how this played out as well. If anyone was going to brag about plundering it would be the Israelite women. Which time and again God shows in His Word that He is willing to us the person or people you would least expect. So why not use the slave women, a people group least likely to pillage ( especially understanding women's role in society back then compared to today) and take and give themselves all the credit for their own greatness. God once again taking the unlikely side character and making them the main character.
I like the contrast between the arrogant Akkadian king that you mentioned and what God did through the Israelite women to make sure that His people wouldn't boast in themselves 👌🏾👌🏾

What if the plunder was getting Josephs bones and plundering the riches in there. Not to mention the people of Egypt handing their jewelry over as they left. Does it matter to you at all that the story of Exodus is mostly or entirely mythical? That, in simple English, what you're reading is more or less a work of fiction? It seems to me that these questions should be the absolute starting point for studying the text but I don't see you addressing it anywhere. Foundational myths can be meaningful to people groups, but they're still just that - myths. Doing what you are here, like trying to "get inside the heads" of the characters of the story, seems like kind of a pointless exercise to me.
Obviously he doesn’t think Exodus is a myth but a historical narrative. What evidence do you have to show Exodus is a myth? There are many archeological discoveries that support the Exodus narrative: Hebrew slaves in Egypt, Egyptians losing their slave population, the Pharaohs first born son not succeeding him but his second born son becomes Pharaoh, nomadic Hebrews wandering in the desert worshiping a God called Yahweh. Look up an archeologist Dr. Titus Kennedy who explains these connections.
