You do not need to pay to use BGA! Every game is accessible with a free account. The only limitation is some games require a premium member to be in the lobby before they can start. You can see the overall Elo leaderboard by going to a game's page and changing "Current Season" to "All Time" in the drop down box. In the "Community" tab you can see all the requirements you need to meet to become an "alpha tester" and try out the newest releases. Alpha testers can still invite you to unreleased games even if you don't meet all the requirements.
BGA has such great matchmaking, reputation system, and selection of games. There's really no competition. But their site staff occasionally make unexpected major changes to the site that are frustrating to most users and they seem surprisingly uninterested in user feedback on these changes. I don't really understand their disinterest in including the community of users in dialogue about how the changes affect them.
It's interesting right. I was actually one of the people that tested the new lobby before it was released to the public. One of my problems back then was that you couldn't use it to queue for multiple games at once. I was told they were working on an option to be able to do this. It's been at least 6 months and nothing :(
is there a way to get the old lobby? I mean the one with the options on the left, players on the right. Rather than the new one with players on the right and the options below the players. Sometimes me and my friends slip into the old lobby format but cant find an option to force it.
I think you're talking about making a table manually - you can still do that through the old lobby. Change from automatic to manual and make the table of whichever game you wish.
I don't think they could have picked a worse icon to show that, I always assumed it was to leave a table. Having said that, I just tried it out and it did nothing in arena mode. I set the rating to Expert or Master only and got matched up in 2 seconds to a 200 rated player. So I believe it would work for normal games, but the old lobby works for normal and arena properly.
Btw I’m not sure if you can filter matchup by player level on Arena mode. BGA FAQ says “you cannot choose your opponents”. I guess that may or may not exclude filtering. But I suppose the presence of the door icon implies that it should be possible-or is that another GUI red herring?! I’m new to the game and BGA so just trying to figure it all out!
In the old lobby you can restrict the arena level of your opponent (not Elo, you are right). If I'm in elite league and select only "players my level" then it will only match up against other elite league opponents.@@howardb8475
Just started getting into Ark Nova on BGA and was wondering if there was a consensus for some of these settings! Particularly the map setup "Competitive Level". I assume "Same Map for All Players" is preferable to anything else?
Arena settings have always been same map from the beginning. I don’t mind normal either though (choice of 2 maps) - that is how you would play if it was in real life. It’s really just a matter of preference, you will find opponents either way!
This being said "Manual" imo gives you way more control over who to play with. Arena uses the system that "Automatic" uses though, so it is good to know for that case.
I worked on a dark theme briefly (basically continued where another user stopped), but there have been so many changes since and it's too much work to keep up :( Worse yet, ANY custom CSS prevents you from accessing the bugs overview for example. It is infuriating... For the longest time i used it to hide the "known games" overview when it showed ALL games you've ever played which was like 3/4 of the page for me, since i like getting the first wins for free premium months. Now that it only shows a few games to begin with and adds the rest on demand, the site has become much more usable for me. But, if you know a bit about CSS and stick to changing backgrounds and text-colors, you should be fine for the most part. Some games require/provide specific backgrounds to work properly, that might be an issue here or there and some games might use colorcoding in the text to get information across. As long as you use "!important" sparingly and take it step by step, you should be fine though and you can achieve a lot with very little changes. I'd stay away from resizing or moving around things though - Even if you don't break something immediately, i wouldn't bet on it staying futureproof.

I laughed very loud at the "Aww sh.."
Thanks Sam!! Lots of useful info!!
Ark Nova guru 😮 Very impressive 👏

Seeing as both players in an Arena game of Ark Nova use the same map,
what's the meaning of the statement "Map Such-and-such is OP for Arena?"
OP is the wrong word - more like unfair. The first player advantage on map 10 is much larger than any other map in the pool.
Is it just me or did Sam only make this video to boost about him being top 10 and a guru in AN?
you got me

Can’t you restrict the level of players that you get matched up against in the new lobby too? By clicking the door icon next to the player count

@@NoWondersTV Thanks will try that out tonight!

So the "player level" setting always checks your Arena level and never your ELO?
If you're queuing in arena mode it will only check arena level. If you're queuing in simple mode it will be based on Elo.
@@NoWondersTV got it, thanks!
So how'd you do in the game you didn't mean to get into?
Thankfully I remembered it was normal mode and I could decline. Apologies to everyone that was waiting to play 7 Wonders!
Is there a setting to turn on to get those clogs? i don't see them as default?
The drop-down box top right. “Friends”, “Automatic”, “Manual” -> Automatic

@@spacemonkeyentertainment6413 manual is great, just a bit slow. I use manual when inviting friends to play, and automatic to play against strangers.
How do you enable dark mode? sigh, if only.
It would be nice as a setting. I know you can achieve this by adding custom CSS in your preferences, but I don’t know the exact code required!
@@NoWondersTV Yeah, I’m not willing to mess with the CSS for fear I will break the site. Hopefully it’ll be added as an option in the future.

How are tie breakers done in round robin vs swiss vs other tournaments?
In all cases it appears to favour the player with the older account (thanks to you for telling me this info)! Is it intentional or not? Who knows...
Adding on to this - it seems like account age plays no part in single elimination matches that end in a tie.
They should do it by who has paid the most money
Did they remove the cog from the lobby in simple game mode ? I don't have access to it, whereas it's there in arena mode.
It's still there. Make sure you're on "automatic". The cog disappears if you're on "manual" or "friends"
@@NoWondersTV you found the issue, I was in manual indeed. Thanks !
If i click in the "play now" button, it doesnt show me same as you. It stills shows me the "new" way
That's odd - it shouldn't be different for anyone. Either way you can access it through boardgamearena .com / lobby
