    Q:What camera do you use?
    A: I use the Go Pro Hero 6 Black Edition
    Q: Why don't you have a rotator?
    A: Simply said, our wide open desert highways here in Indio do not require a rotator. Most scenarios allow us to drive the truck right down to the wreckage and perform our recovery without taking up any more lane than a rotator would. Another simple reason is price. They are very expensive trucks that, once again aren't really needed here. With that being said, that doesn't mean we will never get one just not at the moment.

    These guys boggle my mind. Non-stop challenging the tow driver AFTER they (the idiots) busted their drive shaft. Unbelievable. "How not to drive heavy equipment 101". Oh well.
    Another fantastic video from a knowledgeable, hard-working and resourceful tow driver who cares about his work and the people he takes care of. Whether they deserve it or not.

    i would have just pulled the rear drive shaft up so its level with a rope or belt and drove it home with the front, ive done that in my 4x4 truck before. never busted a driveshaft on my 6x6

    Wow customer seems confrontational, respect your patience... drive shafts don’t just come apart it takes abuse to break a drive shaft, it all comes down to the operator.

      Did you not even notice that the shaft had the F-up bolts, do you not have enough grey matter to figure out the shaft has been worked on before and was probably not done right. Also yes drive shafts can break and do especially with the way they are computer adjusting the torque and fuel for economy. That is why the shaft sizes have grown.

    Good job diffusing his anger and assessing the site and truck to do the job. By the end the guy knew you knew what you are doing. When the customer said "what do you need me to do?" you where very polite in not telling him what you needed him to do. Guy was tense and you showed professionalism and he chilled, I always got stuck with the whiners and screamers for customers at work and it burned me out. Got so I could care less to hear my mother in law.

    the guy is annoying.. gotta let you do your job.. also, when you go to pull a driveshaft or anything with bolts/screws etc, maybe get a small magnetic dish to throw them in

      Liked - My thoughts exactly, on the magnetic dish and, a bucket or plastic bag to go over the ends of the shafts/U-joints before they go into the dirt - maybe.

    This reminded me of a family vacation I was on when I was a kid. My dad pulled the brocken driveshaft out of our suburban and drove 1000 miles home towing a 8000lb boat. It worked great and he still owns the suburban 20 years later.

      That Suburban probably had a Dana 44 or Dana 60 up front, which is strong enough relative to the vehicle and the trailer. Newer light-trucks with IFS don't usually have front differentials that are strong enough for that kind of service.

    The reason that drive shaft came apart is that it does not have long enough spline area. The drive shaft is for regular truck and not a 6×6. If you noticed the two bolts that were wrong size and grade type. This is because this has happened before to that truck. Most likely a mistake in manufacturing.

      The splines themselves are plenty long, just the drive shaft as a whole is too damn short.

      Yeah and you can see where they separated it all the weight was on the front and rear most axles so the middle one was hanging(maximum driveshaft extension).

    Another good job, 5 and 1/2 years on other people's trucks and 26 and 1/2 on my own Petes, was never towed, not saying I never broke down just was never on the hook, interesting watching what you do, pull toy here.

    Most likely cause of the axle breaking is the water sloshing back and forth in the tank if it doesn't have baffles in it. Several tons of water moving in a wave in the tank can put a lot of strain on the driveline if it hits the bulkheads at the right time.

      CO Jones the drive shaft wasn’t broke it was measured wrong and slid the splines apart when the front drive axle dropped into the low spot because he cut the corner short.

      The tank was emptied, so said the driver but still maybe he could've driven it using only the front drive wheels but maybe because it was a rental somebody decided it was better towed for liability reasons.

      Their yard though, it looked really damn awkward. They kept blaming the guy that was driving that he broke the truck, when it looked like he was simply the poor schmuck driving it when something already wrong finally gave out.

    I've often wondered why you don't get a small plastic bucked, like an ice cream container, to put the drive line bolts and parts in.

      Granted this is on much smaller vehicles, but I put the u-joint straps back on and snug the bolts down when taking the driveshaft off. Means I can find the hardware when it's time to reassemble. Done this both on stuff that was getting worked on in the shop and in prep for a wheel-lift tow.

    On those asking about the strength of the leaf springs. To expand on Trent’s ‘yes they are’ realize that the truck weight is on the leaf springs-they attach to the truck frame and then to the axle. So with exception of the axle and related parts, the leaf springs hold the weight of the truck when raised off the ground all of the weight including the axle are supported by the leaf springs.

      True, it can support the weight but say the leafsprings come loose because of a broken bolt at the front maybe it would be wiser to wrap the frame instead with the chain. That way you have a redundancy of attaching to two separate points. Not likely to happen though so why bother.

    I haven't looked this up yet but if you haven't already done a video on what things would be really nice on a truck to make it easier to hook up to that would be a very helpful video for a lot of drivers I'm sure it would save you some time as well as help you to be able to make more money while still lowering your age just a hair. shoot even if you were to put quick connects or something on the air tanks and stuff I'm pretty sure that would be a big help to yourself in the future or some sort of tying method on every track you come across so that you can control it a lot better and safer while going down steep grades I'm going up steep grades.

    I lost the rear shaft in a cement mixer on a job, boss sent the mechanic to pull the shaft, then had me drive the thing back to the shop with the 6X6 engaged. Guess he didnt wanna shell out for a tow...

    The last thing the water truck needs, is a tow. Pull the driveshaft and finish his water delivery on the front end, then drive it to his own shop.

      Bob Bartlett no, thats how you destroy the front axle, driveshaft, or transfer case. It’s not designed to have all of that power only going to the front axle. Whether it’s unloaded or not.

      The Big House pretty sure the grates are so the dirt/sand doesn’t get shoved to one side of the road or the other from the trucks pulling in and out, also helps with traction pulling back out.

      Weren’t they just full of dirt Texas gates for stopping cattle. Theta whet we call them in Canada. We clean ours out with a combo unit so they actually stop cattle.

    Was the air pressure 100 and rising on both the primary and secondary, or one or the other (and which one?) Which air tank did you end up connecting to?? Does it matter if you hook up to primary or secondary air tanks? I always heard that the front brakes were on secondary, and the tandem brakes were on primary.

    If there shop was just rite down the road why didn't they just drive it there after you pulled the rear drive line, instead of you hookin them and towing it and billing them for a heavy tow?

      Brett Callahan that most likely would cause a lot of damage to either the transfer case, front drive shaft, front axle, or some other powertrain related bits. Not a safe gamble for saving a couple bucks

      PRobably liability concerns. And the fact that the 6x6 isn't meant for that sort of use so it could have broken that shaft.

      "If *their* shop was just *right* down the road" - My guess is that 4X4's and in this case a 6X6, are not designed (or intended) to run as a FWD, only.
      A 100' or so at 5-10 MPH, on an empty truck, is probably fine.
      1 or more miles would probably void the warranty and take a long time to drive and, may cause damage that might not become evident, right away (or simply break that, too).
      Short answer: torque imbalance. _It would be tempting to do, though_ .

      6x6 trucks are usually governed for slower speeds. The ones we built where anyway. Drive it nice and easy and they emptied the water, so it would have been fine.

      Those 6X6 trucks are meant to only run 6X6 mode at low speed (25mph or less) so attempting to run it back to their shop would have most likely caused damage to the transfer case. It wasn't designed to run highway speed with 6X6 engaged. Moving it 100 feet or so at idle speed is fine, but driving it several miles would ultimately damage the transfer case.

    It appears to me the the driveshaft was made too short and the splined shaft just slips out. It need a new shaft made to correct length!

    All that time to run a air supply line, i would have just let the thing idle 5 miles down the street. The drive line has already been removed and even though its a 6x6 the front (now the only drive) axel is off the ground. I mean your way is the "Proper way" but there is no hurting it running it in neutral and saving some time

      Its dual purpose, first to keep dirt and debris from entering the roadway and two to keep that spot from getting rutted/washed out from high use.

    I think that drive shaft has been out before, and that is not original driveshaft that odd bolt on differential u- joint is a giveaway that it has been out before!

      Definitely has been out before. I wonder if this problem has happended before and thats why it was out or it was out for another reason. And if they didnt install it right and it caused this problem.

    also a foam insulation board makes a great pad to lay on when youre wrenching on trucks

    If those guys had a tool kit they could have pulled the driveline and driven it back in 6x6.

      For the same reason he pulls the drive shaft when towing from the front. While the truck can be driven using just the front wheels, especially if there is an emergency. It was not designed to be driven with just the front wheels and could damage the driveline by putting all the strain on the front. Plus, it’s better to be safe and have it towed verse risking damage driving it with just the front wheel.

      It also wasn't their truck. It was a rental. Can't risk it.

    Looks to me that the drive shaft is Not broken, but it was made too short and it came out of the spline?

    Hey Trent how come u just did not wheel lift it...I always wheel lift them whene they are 6x6x6x6,trucks,,a lot easier to do and a lot less strain on them too.,
