After Delhi, HRE, Abbasid, Rus and Mongols, time to focus on the English Build Order! Whether you go 1 or 2 TC opener, the early game of this more classic yet interesting civilization will have no secret for you after watching this video!
@@kooroshrostami27 I’ve been going with steeled arrow and siege engineering before/during the initial attack and only researching economics if the rush failed and I start moving towards castle age
I don't even play AoE4, or many RTS's anymore, but I enjoyed the video immensely. Sometimes while browsing trough Twitch, I'd try to watch a bit of AoE4 but get lost or overwhelmed. You did a great job of breaking the early game and build order down. Enjoy your new phase with AoE4. I'll be waiting for the WC3 content return and still be amazed with whatever game you decide to pick up and make content for.
I’ve just recently come across this build order (#2, the 1 TC longbow rush) and boy oh boy does it work. I first started by practicing against int. AI, then moved onto hard when confident. All of my practice runs were won before the 25th minute, and now I’m getting consistent wins in quick match around the same time! Cheers for the build order and tips, still works great to this day post-patches! Keep up the good work and I look forward to what content you have lined up!
I've been using both these builds prior to you putting this out, glad to see I'm not to far off with my timings. Been also trying a greedy fast castle with Abby of Kings as my 2nd TC. You get the Castle Age English unique men at arm upgrade early on it is quite good as well.
Grubby.. a name I haven't seen in a longgg time. Used to follow you quite a bit back in the SC2 WOL / HOTS days. Glad to stumble across you again! Hope all is well
Grubby, you are a legend for providing this all for free. Also so cool to see you interact with your community in a scholastic way. You ooze the love for RTS!
I love your focus on very specific timing and thought out gameplan. To often I get flustered and end up with 12 different upgrades I barely need still stuck in the feudal age lol.
Used to watch your content back when I played SC2, eventually I stopped playing it. Glad we are back playing the same game so I can steal your builds and strategies again ;) Nice to see you again Grubby!
There's a small double edged sword with the sheep close positioning. If the sheep are too close, there's a chance that not all of the Villagers can collect from one. It shouldn't matter too much in most cases though. However, beware of idle time if less than 2 sheep and/or more than say 10 Villagers. In most cases, about 5 Villagers can collect if the carcass is blocked by being too close to a building. Normally, a max of 8 Villagers may collect, for reference.
Hey, Grubby. I'm nowhere near as good as you are in this game, just by looking at how fast you can give commands to your units, so this means you could probably execute things a LOT faster than me. I believe I have a slight improvement to your early build order, which will only slightly delay your age up, but will make you get wood a lot faster for your 2tc build. I end up with a very similar distribution, but I believe this configuration will gather a bit more efficiently. Could you try it out? Here's the changes: 1- train vills, original 6 vills on food, send scout out as usual. 2- 1st vill build Mining Camp on Gold, 2nd vill builds house near the same mining camp, shift-gather gold. 3- rally TC to sheep. 2 next vills go on Sheep (8 total). 4- Next vill builds a Lumber Camp, then rally 1 more vill to Gold before rallying the rest to lumber (this is what I changed from your build). 5- As soon as the Lumber Camp is done, research Forestry (that last Gold vill will "pay for it"). At this point, you have 8 on Food, 3 on Gold, 1 on Lumber, and you age up with the 3 gold vills (shift-click them to wood). Because you're building with 3 vills instead of 2, it should compensate for the slightly delayed start. Rally TC to wood, as soon as Forestry is done, you will gain more lumber per villager, compensating the delay and allowing you to reach the 400 mark faster. From this point forward, everything is the same, except that when you get 7 villagers on Wood, you can re-rally them to sheep, since you'll be producing vills from 2 TCs, you'll need to bank some food for when your 2nd TC is finished. Anyway, let me know if you decide to try it out. Cheers, mate!
Your vids are awesome Grubby. I’d like these vids vs real opponents even tho trust me I know it’s tough to tutorial as playing ladder but even if you lose would still be great content, explaining what went wrong and what to watch out for.
For aggression timings, is it better to attack with 9 or 10 Longbows to 1-shot Villagers, or is it better to attack with 5 and 2-shot them, but starting earlier? Or does this just let them get away too fast? (Maybe before attacking move to less than maximum range so that even if they run on a hair trigger, they won't make it out of range in time?) For economic timings, obviously 1 Town Center is going to get you to Feudal faster than early 2 Town Center, but how does this come out for getting to Castle Age and Imperial Age? (Like if you went early 2 Town Center, then beefed up defenses to counter anti-economic aggression, and then after holding that you go for Castle Age and Imperial Age as fast as possible, compared to more steady aging up with 1 Town Center and maybe late 2nd Town Center?
Since posting the above, I have seen Grubby post a video of making 5 Longbows for 2-shotting enemy Villagers, but then not committing any more resources to the early harass.
So, back during the stress test, I had a good deal of success with early Longbow pushes like this. I found that sending one villager forward with the Longbows useful to put up an Outpost. This would provide the Network of Castles buff. If things are going well on this agression, I found that a forward Barracks near that Outpost can often give even better pressure or a win. Eventually, my opponents started to protect their villagers more often, most folks online may be wise to such things now too. It all boils down to if you can find and pick a few Villagers right away. Otherwise, the forward Barracks is usually not a good idea. Better to build up in base, as suggested here in this video. :)
Saw the 2 TC and paused... pretty solid... good not going for economy upgrades as to not further jeopardize defense against the beloved tier 2 ram offensive... I'm hoping for the offensive White Tower keep tier 3 push on the next one Grubby. I feel it coming!
awwww it's ok, I forgive you. Admitted your mechanics are better than mine but I will note one thing that you are aware of since you slightly hinted at it but still... for the fans! 24:24 The selected workers will build all the farms together before actually working them. Also, it goes in the order of the placement which usually zig-zags across the mill when using shortcuts which means that it takes an ever-so-slightly exponentially more time the more farms you try to build. You have demonstrated taking single villagers and assigning a few to the other farms and this helps a lot to mitigate that wasted time. Another way to do it is to make sure you only build 3-5 farms at once by doing the opposite micro you did. Let's say you've been busy battling and want to dump ~380 or 750 lumber into 10 farms (English it's 38 and 75 for others IIRC). Grabbing 10 villagers together and making 10 farms will take a LONG TIME so when you can either grab 4 or 5 at a time, build, and then grab another 4 or 5 and build the rest. This works a lot faster... you can even get fancy and shift click a group of ten to drop off and then walk towards the mill before splitting them in half to work on their group of farms.
@@FollowGrubby Oh yeah I'm usually halfway panic'ing because I have no food to sustain crossbow production or something and a pile of siege just outside their base with dwindling reinforcements. Farm micro is a big hit or miss at that point..
I'm really enjoying this guide so far. I'd like to add a small note about the deer. If constructing a building near them like this, I suggest pairing up sets of 2 Villagers into multiple control groups. Assuming one's Scout is ctrl group 1, these hunting paired Villager pairs could be ctrl 2, 3, and 4 for example. Adjust to whatever preferred group numbering as needed. Once the hunting is all done, the control groups can be reset by having zero units/buildings selected, then assign that control group number again. AoE4's ui has this reset a control group to empty. This will allow any such small tactics to be used whenever needed. Another way to achieve this reset of a control group, select any number of units or buildings that are not part of a control group, then reassign that new selection to the desired group # to be overridden. Happy controlling, gamers!
Thank you very much for the builds. Just one question regarding the line of towers for the English bonus. Is there some specific distance that you need to keep between each consecutive tower?
I love these guides I'm kinda waiting on a patch, though, because spears/xbows/etc. just don't seem to be able to counter a cavalry blob and I keep losing to cav spamming factions regardless of how many spears/xbows I produce.
Hi Grubby thanks for this quite excellent tutorial. Question - I can't quite tell by watching the 2 TC build order, but do you immediately begin queuing 2x longbow out of the Council Hall when it finishes or do you wait a little while?
can u do an accurate build with timings for HRE also? the one u put out 12 days ago is kinda out of date.. maiby u impoved on it or something.. im strugling so much with hre atm in 1v1.. i dont always go for the MAA push.. depends on map. i find the problem wiith them is that ure openent is securing map control faster and u lose the relics on t3..
How avoid getting angry in RTS games when you try to play a non-meta civ (Delhi) but mostly face civs that (at least to you) feel op? I spend a lot of time learning Delhi and perfecting the early holy site spear + bow fast castle strategy, but against French, spears dont work (they are so ridiculous weak), vs English Longbow + MAA you have no counter until T3 and Mongols are also not easy to counter early on. Is the only way to play a meta civ too and cheese 1v1 with the always-the-same strats? In the current balancing state of the game it feels like the only logical thing unfortunately...
While this build was fast 2 TC (5 minutes and a few seconds), I feel a 2nd TC is better at 7, 9 or 10 minutes when it doesn't impact other types of timings and productions as much.
Great vid, very informative. Just would recommend considering turning down the game sounds or something when you do these kinds of vids cus it's really nerve racking trying to listen to you talk over the sounds of you spam queuing actions lol
