I love Brompton folders as they made it possible to complete my tours and have fun with as little hassles as possible while having to carry the bike. I also feel that the main focus is the journey so I am happy to give this a try! Will keep the filming going and allow it more time :)
Have a great trip, enjoy the miles - I’m looking forward to your videos. Thank you for all the content on this channel. It has become one of life’s highlights!!
Heresy! Joining the major leagues, are you? At least the gear shifters will be smooth. Enjoy your long summer adventure on the trail, we’ll be looking forward to news updates.
Completely! I will sure get back to the convenience of touring on a folder once this freedom from time constraints will come to an end! Thanks, and wonderful rides on your Bromptons and always interesting watching your videos too!
I was so happy to see you'll be riding the Kona Sutra, a touring bike I take on tours myself as well. Enjoy the adventure and I will look forward to the videos.
Owning a Brompton and a Surly Long Haul Trucker, I'm fully with you. If there were such a thing as the "ultimate touring bike", that will be know 😉I'm sure your review of using a full sized bicycle will of great interest, as always. Ride safe and have fun
It will be interesting to shift and compare the differences. There are always compromises to make; I guess I will gain in comfort, speed (not that I care that much!) and ability to carry more stuff, while losing in convenience and that ‘wow…this guy is crazy’ factor that is a constant when you meet people while touring on a folding bike.
Wonderful idea. Although my route was from touring bike to Brompton, I applaud your decision. A worthwhile ongoing commentary would be to compare the two bikes while traveling; on the road, on airplanes, on trains, in cities, camping and hotels, etc. Looking forward to following your journey. P.S. My route vote would include the Lofoton Islands in Norway.
Thanks again Peter, for all the nice comments and suggestions over the years. I will have a chance to compare for sure. I intend to not use public transports as much, besides ferries and the occasional train if it becomes necessary, which is why trying a bigger bike on this occasion seems to make sense. Will see how it pans out! Cheers
Hi Gianni, happy to see that your Scandinavian tour on a conventional touring bike has finally took off. We'll visit Sweden and Norway esp Tromso in December this year during school holiday to watch the aurora borealis with our little ones. Everyone in our family knows you by your videos. But sadly you'll finish your tour by the time we're there. But look forward to your video, hopefully little bit more frequently than usual. We wish you safe tour with lots of enjoyments.
Same here. Refreshing positive vibe content but not sugar coated. Gianni motivates me to ride longer distances like when I was young, although I still avoid the hills as much as possible. My heart rate goes uo just watching some of the vids with serious elevation gain.
I shall follow you on what ever bike you ride. I enjoyed your most recent book Unfolding Further. The Kona Sutra is a great bike. I hope you will both ride many happy miles together. Yes you will notice it is a lot heavier and less nimble than a Brompton which I notice when I ride my full frame touring/gravel bikes compared to my Brompton. The Brompton is a great touring bike but has it's limitations. Like you I have travelled widely on mine, carrying all I need, camping and cooking equipment as well. I have made some fantastic tours on it that I shall never forget. It is just so convenient and easy to ride. You can literally go anywhere with it. The best place I went with it was Gran Canaria for two weeks where I climbed the steep mountains all over the island, on and off road and did a lot of wild camping. One of the best tours I have ever done. I ride other bikes but I still love riding my Brompton. It's a keeper. Good luck with your new tour. When do you set off and where to? How long will you have available? I guess being Italian you have no restriction on how long you can stay in the EU unlike us Brits limited to 90 days in any 180 days. ATB.
Thanks Alex, and pleased to hear you enjoyed the read. Definitely less nimble but a little bit more stable and with less roll resistance of course. I also love the nimble factor of a Bromton, especially when riding in traffic in cities as it is an easy bike to handle and get off it when you need! Will keep Gran Canaria on my list! Leaving London around 10th of June and planning to cross to Calais and then move to Belgium and Holland initially. Luckily on Italian passport so no issue with limitation on time… Great rides to you!
Sounds like an amazing tour, I’ll definitely be watching. As for dropping the Brompton it was issues I had with traditional bikes while on longer tours that led me to the Brompton. Good luck on your travels G👍🚴♂️
For sure Brompton makes it very easy at times. I will see how it goes; the idea is to not rely much on flights and other transportation for a while, which is where a folder would come in handy.
Brilliant! we all ride different bikes for different purposes! Bravo for following your dream and setting off on a huge long trip! It going to be fantastic!
Out of curiosity as the Kona come with a brooks B17 how do you find it on your full-size bike? Any tips for adjustment ? I got one due to the general love for them online but I’ve really struggled to get comfortable even with padded shorts. Feels like a shame to get rid of it.
Yes. Saddles are highly personal and what fits some is very uncomfortable to someone else. Brooks are well known to take a while to get into shape though and need a little patience and breaking in…if after a while you still feel the same get something else you are more used to. For me they are the best saddle for long hours cycling.
Hi Gianni, we know from instragram that you're passing through Belgium now, by the time you read this message you may already have crossed Belgium. Maryam is asking if you're going to post videos as you go along.
come on man.. I just bought a Brompton 😂😜, BTW thanks a lot for your videos. Which country in Europe do you advise to visit with a Brompton? I live in Amsterdam and I and I can take the train/bus/plane to get there.. Thanks ...
😂you’ll enjoy that bike for sure. Difficult to say and depends on the time of the year…if you like mountains and hills and plan to go autumn Provence is always nice. Portugal is also really nice off season. Being Italian I would also say Italy has got plenty of good rides…
I love my Brompton but I also have a hard tail MTB and a Gravel bike. Not one bike will do everything. This is just good common sense:) I look forward to seeing your new adventures Gianni. Good luck and happy and safe travels:)
Honestly, I still don't know how Gianni did it on a Brompton. The Kona Sutra he has now is pretty bulletproof, but with a chromoly steel frame it is not light.
Me weighing 90 kilo and touring with 30 kilo lugggage had no problems with the Brompton so I am wondering how much luggage did you decide to bring that made the touring bike a must for your longer trip?
It's a fair point. In my experience with the gear I used to carry on past trips I did not have space left on my Brompton setup. On a much longer trip than I have ever done before, I needed cooking gear, space for the food, to make it more affordable and more space from camping gear that to be more durable often needs to be a little heavier and bulkier. Given the distance covered I also wanted to have a more regular bike that can be fixed and whose parts can be replaced at a bike shop no matter where I found myself to be. I am not saying that a trip like this could not have been done on a Brompton, I know they are very capable bikes.
@@BromptonTraveler Ok thank you. I am beginning touring with Brompton C-Line and really enjoying it. So far so good. But what's been on my mind is should I buy a dedicated touring bike. I'll figure it out soon enough but wanted to pick your brain further as you have huge experience on the bike. Keep up the great videos, that Pakistan video was absolutely stunning, I was in awe wondering how fit you must be to get that Brompton up some very high peaks with luggage too :)
@@BloodyShambles1997 It all depends on the kind of touring you do. Brompton bikes are excellent for most tours on good surface ( mostly tarmac ) and shine when it comes to practicality as they allow you to easily transport them, unlike a touring bike. They can cope but are not ideal off-road on rough terrain. Touring bikes are slightly more comfortable, you can cover a bit more ground for the same effort and have more standard components which make them more easily repairable no matter where you are.
Congratulations to the new bike! We are guilty of being Fatbikers apart from our Bromptons 😂 You'll be fine! We cannot wait to see where the journey will go 💪😊 All the best!
To chose steel frame is a very good idea. To use drop handlebar is not good idea. Not comfortable for long distance for most of the riders. And It's limit you a lot. Also I hope your disk break system is mechanical one (BB7 is a good option) and not hydraulic one. Enjoy.... And maybe by occasion we will meet in Norway or Finland or Estonia this Summer. I will cycle the region about 4 months..
Great, if you bump into me give a shout, I’ll be mostly wearing a brim hat! Drop handlebars surely take some adjusting. Aeons ago I used to ride racing bikes. I will need to get used to that but they also come with some advantages like hands positions and aerodynamics when facing strong headwinds ( of course not so important when riding a heavy loaded bike…) Brakes are indeed mechanical TRP.
