Hi guys! I am so glad I stumbled upon this video, because we are planning a similar itinerary and was hoping to ask you some questions! We've been to NZ before, and know that google map driving times are sometimes underestimated due to road conditions and such, so I wanted to know what you thought about driving from Christchurch to Lake Tekapo, with a detour to the Mount Sunday hike, all in one day. Do you think this would be too much, too exhausting? The grand plan is to start the day early out of Christchurch, do this drive, with the Mt Sunday detour, and arrive in Lake Tekapo around dinner time, grab a bite to eat, take a nap, then do the night time Mt. John Observatory tour that night. I'm trying to decide if we can do all of this in a day, or if I should book a second night in Lake Tekapo and do the observatory tour the second night instead. I'd appreciate your thoughts, comments, etc. I really loved the video, and also like how you filmed some of the driving conditions - it is very helpful!!

That is so exciting for you all, when are you planning your trip? We had thought about going back in Jan '23 but I think we've decided to wait another year to make sure the whole covid thing is good and gone...hopefully.
To your question though, I would say that you could reasonably do all of that drive and detour and observatory all in one day...it might just be a really exhausting day lol! A couple things to consider would be how much time you want to spend at Mt Sunday. Unfortunately for us it was so windy we really didn't get the chance to stay as long as we would have liked. The hike up to and view from the top would definitely be worth the time spent having a picnic lunch and just enjoying the scenery. Another cautionary note for the observatory, I don't know how much time you plan on spending in Tekapo but we spent 3 days and our observatory tour was cancelled every single day because of high winds. So maybe if you want to play it safe you would at least plan on staying in Tekapo for 2 nights and that way if your tour is cancelled you might be able to rebook the following night. Just a thought! 😊
