I have to say thank you. Single mom and I have a leak lol. After this video I am confident enough to buy the kit on Amazon, and change out myself. I appreciate your easy, step-by-step instructions, and showing all of the detail I subscribed!!! ❤
I wanted to thank you for this video, because thanks to you, I solved my problem with water infiltration at the front of my ram truck, just above the central rearview mirror. I immediately thought it was coming from the sunroof, but you were absolutely right, the problem was with the rear brake lights! I ordered a gasket from Amazon. The model I got is thicker than factory and prevents water leaking in effectively. Plus it is single-side adhesive so it is easy to replace bulb in the future and won't ruin the gasket. I live in the Paris region in France, but they sent me the gasket directly from the USA, from Florida without any problem and very quickly. I unscrewed the rear lights, and indeed the old gasket was completely damaged and flat. I scraped well to remove the old gasket and installed the new self-adhesive gasket. Since then it has snowed and rained, and I no longer have any water infiltration inside my ram! It's really awesome. Thank you with all my heart for your excellent repair tip! Update : in fact it has rained a lot in the last few days and I started to have water in the ram again. Water was leaking from the grab handle and sunvisor driver's side. In fact it was the small hole to the left of the sunroof that was clogged. I took a cotton swab to unclog the hole and vacuumed it. Now the water flows into the drain and comes out well outside the truck. Above all, do not use an air compressor or a Karscher as this risks detaching the drainage pipe from the nozzle. In this case you will have to dismantle everything to repair!
Thank you so much for making this video. I had water dripping from the handle grip exactly as you said. I was preparing to remove the seal around my front drivers side windshield. I ordered the gasket from Amazon. Again, Thank You!
As the gasket breaks down the screws become loose, fit a tiny O ring around the screw threads. Sandwich the flat nylon washer between the screw head and the newly installed O ring. The nylon washer effectively becomes a backer for the O ring. The O ring will seal around the screw as well as the screw opening, preventing a leak.
Yup. The factory brake light assembly comes with rubber o-rings for the screws for this reason. A lot of people don't know that or assume they're not important. o-rings of an appropriate size are included in the small Dorman o-ring kits. Worth having around for just about anyone because you never know when you'll need o-rings let alone what size you'll need, and the kits are less than $10 and come with tons and tons of them in several sizes.
I hope this will solve our problem. Very recently weve discovered water stains on the inside of of the ceiling of both sides in the back. I will definitely try this. Wish me luck!
Ours is a 2014 ram limited mega cab, with sunroof and we also have a 2006 Laredo mega cab with sunroof. both trucks week from the front door handle passenger side mainly. 2014 gets wet on the rear carpet right next to the passenger door and the headliner gets wet over the rear passenger corner. Thanks for your help. There should be a class action suit, and I recall on these rams.
Ram just extended the warranty on the seals for the fin and lights on the back. I just had my entire window replaced under this extended warranty, because I explained to them it was a seal issue. That’s what causes the cracks INSIDE the truck on the top of the window frame. Water gets inside and freezes. Check on the extended warranty, because it might be covered now.
@@ShaneBurrell1 I ordered same type of gasket from amazon, this friday I am planning to replace the original gasket with the new one, hope it will solve this problerm, but so shame of FCA,simple gasket and they can not do it right.what a pos.
I suggest using flex seal or some brand of flashing to loosely seal the brake light hole then using a new gasket overtop. If the gasket fails you can ensure you wont have a leak again.
My 17 has got water stains upper rear passenger side. Has water inside the back window after running thru the car wash yesterday. Not sure it's my 3rd light gasket but rather the seal around the back window. Have you had this issue? I used some silicone today to seal around the passenger and driver's side rear windows. I have that gasket ordered from Amazon and plan on replacing it in a few days. Great video!
It's almost always the 3rd brake light gasket. I've seen water in those areas from it all the way up to the sunroof and front grab handle from water coming in at the 3rd brake light. The gasket they use compresses then comes loose allowing water in. Also when you put the new gasket in I don't recommend adding any sealant. The replacement is thicker than the OEM. Just be sure to clean the area.
If there is water near the front grab bars, make sure you check your sunroof drains! They do get plugged and water presents itself inside the cab at the front
Hi, Shane, I have a 2015 RAM 1500. I watched the video and am waiting for my gasket to arrive. Great information. I also have the issue with the antilock brake module going bad. Brake errors, can't use my trailer brakes. Also, no cruise control. Any suggestions. Dodge tells me there is a 250k backlog for these parts. Thanks for your advice.
Appreciate the video sir. Let me ask you, what’s your opinion on using or not using silicone on the gasket surface that comes in contact with the truck? Also did you get any water stains on your headliner? If so what did you use to clean it? ✌🏽
Glad you found it helpful. I don't recommend silicone. Nice clean surface and a new gasket on my 2010 and 2017 was the final fix on both Rams. I didn't get stains but others have recommended steam clean / woollite as possible solutions if you have stains from the leak.
I have a 2018 ram 1500, went to dealer and had this leak fixed 900 bucks later in 2021, now I have another leak 🙄, water found in the storage compartments under seat. Do you think this would be the problem again? Truck is parked outside and we only really get a good 2 to 3 months of summer weather where we live. Would hate to try to save money and do it myself and it not be the problem.
@ShaneBurrell1 That was the $900 repair we did was the 3rd brake light. Now we have a leak again. Truck is usually parked on flat surface. Water ended up in back on passenger side in the storage compartment. 🙄 disappointing for how much you paid for the truck to consistently get leak after leak.
So most of the water leaks are from the are escapes that are between the bed of the truck and the back seats. You can fold up your back seat during a rain storm and see if you see any dribbling. That brake light looked good.
I just went through a car wash today and noticed a drop of water on the center head rest of my 2020 ram 2500 Laramie, checked amazon but it says the seal wont fit and i really dont want to spend 700$ on a new third break light, also the healiner was wet
If you have a shark fin Antenna on the roof they Leak worse than the 3rd Brake light, But... You also sound like you might have a sunroof? If so you need to clean/Clear the 4 sunroof drains one or more may be clogged Be careful not to use compressed air as you could blow the drain tube off the mount and it becomes a bigger job than it needs to be. Good Luck! Its always one of those 3 Roof, Antenna or 3rd Brake light!
@@MidKnight70 no sunroof, But I do have this serius satellite antenna in the back corner. Interestingly enough I turnes the truck around so now that bed is pointing down in the driveway and I noticed water ran out from underneath that antenna so that must be the culprit. I tried to rip it off but could only get it up like a half inch something is really holding it on and I assume you have to take the headliner off to get to whatever's on the other side. So basically I just filled that entire thing up with silicone and all around it. Hopefully that works.
I used 3 m weather stripping sealer and went all around the top of the back window that solved my issue of water coming in on the driver's side top corner by the grab bar
It's almost always the third brake light or plugged sunroof drain. The side pillar grab is where mine leaked on past 2 rams due to 3rd brake light gasket.
Do you have cab lights? That what my problem was...dripped right down out of handle like you said. Bought aftermarket ones and sealed the hell out of them, no more water
my 2017 ram big horn apparently has this leak. When I get things from under my backseats that I carry at all times like jumper cables or tiedowns, they are wet. I can fix that. But I’m glad I didn’t buy a GMC or a Chevy because of their monumental engine and transmission problems, and I’m glad I didn’t buy a Ford. I can’t even count all the major engine problems. They are having such as in the bronco… just open up all the drains that are supposed to drain the gutters.. under the window in the back. That gets clogged up with seeds or leaves. As for the third brake light, just put a small bead of clear silicone over the old gasket. The problem with just replacing the gasket is, depending on how hot the climate is where the truck sits in the sun during the day, that third brake lite housing can get distorted as it gets baked by the sun light.. I would much rather contend with occasional drain, plugging, causing water leakage when it rains, then deal with occasional transmission or engine rebuilds, that Ford and General Motors owners are going through, even the Toyota tundra, the hundreds of thousands of trucks they are going to replace the engines.. I don’t know how Toyotas gonna afford that. Toyota already replaced the frame on my son’s 2011 Tacoma that he bought new. He has 186,000 miles on his Toyota Tacoma. with a V6. He has had no engine or transmission issues.
@@traviswarren394 I think it is fixed. I put a new 3rd light in with a gasket. Used permatex window silicone around my front and rear windows. I also replaced the two roof trims. @@Jodyrides True. It has always run good. So far my only complaint is the leaking, which I think I finally got fixed. The only truck I would consider over the Dodge is a Toyota but I don't think I'll be buying a new truck any time soon. I'll drive this truck until the wheels fall off.
It's outrageous that the manufacturers refuse to correct this many decades old problem. I guess they prefer to sell you replacement lights & headliners or a whole new truck.

What was it?
I thought my brake light seal was the issue, but it was not mine was the rear cab vents. Oh well I guess both are new now, I did the cab gasket first.
Can you put the new gasket right on the old gasket for a thicker seal ?
I wouldn't recommend that. The new gasket is thicker than OEM.
Getting the old gasket off is an absolute PITA. Another thing I am going to add is thin urethane washers for the screws. Never can be too careful.
I used windex to scrub the old glue off if that helps.

Hey brother,Can the third brake light leak mess up the bulbs/wire harness in the light housing?
Thanks.
I haven't seen that on any rams I've owned with the leak. The bulb location and wiring is usually above where the water comes in.
