Part 1 Anchor: Hi Naveen garu. Nani: Oh... this is what you researched all night. Achor: No, I called you Naveen in our first interview, if you remember. Hi Pallav garu.. Pallavi: Hi. Anchor: What a trailer! I feel u already have a winner. So Congrats for that. Nani: Thank You Anchor: The trailor contains posters of Bob Marylin, Kamal Hasan's Aakali Rajyam. What is their sognificance ? Nani: Vasu (played by me) is an upcoming director so his room has these posters, maniratnam's posters and Satyajit Ray's book. He looks upto them. He wants to make the kind of movies they made and thats why we have their posters in the film. Anchor: Was it your idea to have them in the room? Nani: No, it was Rahul's (director) idea. Anchor: Pallavi garu, very excited to talk to u fo rthe very forst time. Pallavi: Thank you Anchor: From what I have seen of you in pre release revent or Big Boss, you look very sensitive but in movies you are very different. Pallavi: I dont know, I am getting those roles. The movies I like to watch are the movies I end up doing. Anchor: How are you on the sets? There must be a lot of stress on the sets as well. Pallavi: I am only thinking about the character and getting my shot right on the sets. Maybe others should say how I outside of the shots. Nani: She is sensitive. In between action and cut, she turns into her character, she cant be Pallavi anymore then. But outside of that she is the Pallavi that you are watching now. Anchor: There have been very few Telugu films with bengali backdrop. Did you take any references from Satyajith Ray's films ? Nani: Rahul did take a lot of references from Satyajith Ray's films. Actually a veteran actor called Barun Chandra acted in this film and he has the experience of working Satyajith Ray.
Why are there no subtitles in these interviews? National audiences are discovering regional cinema in a big way. Sai Pallavi is a much loved star across the country. We want to hear and understand what she is talking. Please add subtitles to these videos.
Part 2 Anchor to Pallavi: You did films like Paava Kadhaigal, Athiran, Kali etc. Those are very challenging roles. But you nailed them. Do you set a bar for the directors to approach you with only those kind of roles ? Pallavi: To be hinest, its not every day that you get to hear such scripts. I have been listening to scripts from one year now. Half of the scripts, we feel like we already watched them before. Few scripts make us feel like that why did I not think like this before? Those are the films that I want to be part of. Thats how these films happenned. Anchor: In my previous interview, Tovino told me that once he dresses up, he gets into that character. Which dress did that for you in this film? Nani: Obviosuly Shyam. Vasu is present day's character and his costumes would be similar to mine. Shyam is completely different, a different setup and a dioferent get up altogether. Anchor: To get into the skin of character is not really easy, and that too a Bengali character. It is difficult to even pronounce Singha Roy properly. How hard was it ? Nani: There is no hardwork involved in it, its like having fun with the character. I enjoyed playing Shyam and every day when the scenes were coming out in an expected way, it was a joyful experience. If we dont perform well, then watching ourseleves on screen would be hardwork. Anchor: Only a few directors have been able to tap the complete potential of Mickey J Meyer, the music director. Like Mahanati which was amazing. Nani: This is Mickey's best album including background score. Anchor: Your favourite song? Nani: Difficult to choose one. I like of Rise of Shyam for teh adrenaline rush it provides. Sirivennela and Pranavalaya are like slow poison. These are my favourites. Palavi: Pranavalaya is my favourite. We keep listening to love songs daily but songs with divinity are a rarity. Like... Antaryaami from Annamayya.. I get emotional when I listen to that song, Pranavalaya is like that song for me. Anchor: You worked with new age directors like Vetrimaaran and Selva Raghavan. What is it about Rahul that made you accept this role? Pallavi: To be honest, with every person its a very different experience. Vetrimaaran sir gave me the skeleton of the character. But he told me he could only write the complete scene on the set. I usually prefer having a complete script before hand so that I know what I need to do on the sets. Other directors did give me bound scripts. Coming to Rahul, he is one of the most patient directors I have worked with. Does not matter what we say, whether it makes sense or not, he would give you a patient hearing. He would have already made up his mind on how to shoot a scene, but he would still hear you out thinking there is a chance I might like what you are about to say. So its was a very healthy and collaborative environment. And he had a nice team too. The ADs were all very young. I liked the clarity he had, for his second film, to pull of something huge like this, with two timelines and over hundred people in each timeline, it was a huge responsibilty on him. He should be confident and even if he is not, he should not show it out because the whole team might get the vibe. So that way he pulled it off really well and he is very patient and clear. Anchor: You played DEvadasi in the film. Any home work that you did before going on to sets ? Pallavi: I did my homework. Apparently in a few places, Devadasis had their feet tattooed. That would help people catch them even if they managed to escape. Not everything is shown in the film. Rahul knew the bigger picture, whatever was required for Shyam's story, only that much is in the film. But I wanted to explore their mindset. At some places Rahula sked me to yell, but I felt that some one who is suppressed so much, it would take a lot of courage for them to even speak. A normal gurl might shout but some one who has been conditioned might not. So in that way it was a collaborative way to get the mindset right. It was a cerebral approach to the character. Anchor: The movie color pallette is very beautiful with the Kolkata backdrop. Are there any beautiful frames stuck in you head? Nani: For me the first scene we shot together(which is the last scene of the film), there is shot where we both are head to head. Its like a beautifil painting. Pallavi: For me, every shot is like a beautifu painting so cant choose one. Nani: Every frame of Pranavalaya song is beautiful. Anchor: Madonna Sebastian is playing a role in the film, does Pallavi have any scenes with her ? Nani: No she does not. She playing an extended cameo. We wanted an actor who commands respect for that role, someone whose vpoice had a weight. After watching the film I felt she was apt for it. Anchor: You danced with old fashioned anklets, that must have been hard. They must be heavy. Pallavi: yes very heavy and also after you fold it 3 to 4 times, they pinch your skin. But Rahul insisted on those to make the scene lok authentic. I respect classical dance a lot. If some one asks me which form of dance is the most difficult, I would say classical form, it would be some form of "tapasya" to learn it. People might tell you that you dance well. But when are rehearsing and you realize that you are not getting even the basic step right, that even a small girl in a dance school would get it, that would be a humbling experinece. This dance did that for me. Anchor: Any scene that got you very emotional ? Pallavi: The first scene that we shot together which is also our last scene together. That was very emotional. Usually we travel with the characters for a while and then we start getting emotional about those, but in this film it was the first scene we shot and I still got emotional. Nani: Even for he viewers, that scene would be very emotional.
Great interview... The interviewer asked interesting questions which brought out quite interesting perspectives from both Nani and Sai Pallavi. Especially way better when compared to other interviews on this movie. Wish this interview continued for an hour or more, felt it was too short.
Quality of film journalism got standard by film companion and film companion south. I am Hruday fan in Telugu didn't knew about this anchor but she is asking best questions which are about movie, process of acting and references of past movies instead of asking non sense questions like which big hero fan are you? Are you okay to do item song? Etc
Wow,so impressed with the movie..take a bow Nani & Sai Pallavi for such wonderful performances….so good to see a movie without fight sequence for once and rebirth topic done so right..magical
It is true. Even I also noticed those part heavily inspired from Satyajit Ray's film. Also Nani Acknowledged Barun Chandra. Really he is one of the gem we have from Ray Sir's era, and it is obvious from an actor worked with Ray.
Part 3 Anchor: As per trailor, we understand Shyam is against God. Nani: he is not against God. He is an atheist, a communist. Anchor: From Ashta Chamma to Shyam Singha Roy, what a journey it has been for you. Lot of people dream for such things but only few people realize them. You have always been like, "I will do films and we will watch together". You have always been the boy next door. How does this journey feel? Nani: I feel humbled. On the first day of my first film, I was surprised to see the theatre 80% occupied. I was wondering why did they come. I always thought who would watch me on the screen. If someone had told me before that this would have been possible, I would have taken it as a joke. I am very happy and full of gratitude. I just want to give my best and do good films. Anchor: Shyam in the poster looks every bit teh Bengali guy. How did you feel when you first saw the look? Nani: We were very happy when we saw this look. We believed we found Shyam. Shyam is a communist but there is an angst within him. The look should go well with his rage as well as the love story. When we zeroed on this look, we all were very happy, Sanu(Sanu John Varghese, cinematographer) was very happy. I dont tink we could have done any better with Shyam's look. This look is apt for Shyam. Anchor: You two are working for the second time. Any change you observed in each other? Nani: No change personally and also no chnage in the method of acting. But our characters in this film have a lot more weight. In MCA, we ahve 5-6 scenes and they were fun scenes. People loved those scenes and also the songs. Our characters in this film are not like our's in day to day lives. They have a lot mpre weight to them and I think we managed them well emough. If people can watch the film post release and let us know, we would be happy. Pallavi: Every day I come to the same set, but even today when I am playing a new character, I get excited like a small kid. It was very heart warming for me to see the same excitement in him. He has been here for so long, you can get tired and exhausted, you mental health can take a hit. But it was nice to see the love for cinema preserved in a small party of his heart, unaffected by anything else. So on tha front, Same Pinch!! Nani: Even she used to get excited when a shot came off well. Pallavi: Yeah, and we used to hug when a shot came off well, wow we created something beautiful, lets give it a second and we used to celebrate. Nani: The pre-release jitters, the butterflies in stomach, the anxiety of a release, it feels like its our first film and we would never get used to it, we should never get used to it. I dont want to get used to it. Anchor: You have been to Kerala and you have an equally huge fanbase over there. How overwhelming was it? Nani: I did not expect. I just went there for a press meet. I did not expect people to turn up in such numbers with banners. I asked them which movies did they watch. They told me that they watched Malayalam versions of Ala Modalaindi. Malayalam version of Eega was aturning point and since then they have been follwoing Telugu films and they also talked about Jersey. They had my pics as screensavers on their phones. I was surprised, I had never been there, I did nbothing for them and still they loved me so much. I did not knwo how to reatc. I promised them to visit them for every film henceforth. I better do that. Anchor: This film has the last song of SiriVennala garu, legendary lyricist who passed away recently. What is your fondest memory of him? And what is your favourite of his songs ? Nani: Tere is no song from him that I dont like. Personally I cherish every conversation I had with him and on the work front, Sirivennela song from Shyam Singha Roy is undoubtedly my most favourite of his compositions. Also the kolkata set got damaged. All this be made up on 24th Decemeber when the fil would get released. What do you want to tell the viewers ? Nani: Thank you all for supporting me in such a big way all these days. We have spoken about the film enough. If people can watch the film from 24th and tell us that all that have said is genuine, we would sleep peacefully. Pallavi: Yes, that day would happily rest. Till then, even while sleeping, we would be thinking about the film. Thanks a lot to Telugu film viewers for encouraging films even in these times, not just our films but all the films. The encouragement you give us in theatres drives us to work harder and do better and thats wehat we want to watch. While we are still in flesh and blood, if people say nice things about us, that we would take untill we pass away. We believe the film would be a visual treat and please go watch it in theatres. And I hope you enjoy the film.

She never said that. She always said she wont do liplock and how she dresses. She has said she tried on makeup but the directors told her they preferred her look without makeup
