- Cow hide preparation and tanning (Part 1) - the first step: salting the hide for storage. In this series of videos we will be processing, cleaning, scraping and tanning two full cow hides. One hide will be tanned with the hair on, the other will be halved with one half to be made into rawhide and the other into veg tanned leather using an oak tanning method.
I live a couple miles away from a small meat locker. They do lots of cows, a few Buffalo and sometimes other things depending on the season. I recently found out that they are throwing away all their hides! I've never tanned my own leather before, but I'm trying cow hides now. I'm excited to see your process because honestly I am in way over my head 🙈😅
how is it going rn?
How did it turn out
Did you tan or no?
Yeah I know how you feel about in over your head. Lol. My step kids dad is a butcher so I buy hides from him. He told me that when his shop butchers cows and things that the hides just get tossed in the dumpster. That's pretty sad. It's basically throwing away money it seems like. I've been buying cow and deer hides from step kids dad but haven't had a chance yet to start fleshing. Either the weather sucks or I get side tracked with other things. I have 2 freezers. My smaller freezer is full, only about 4 or 5 cow hides are in that one and at my mother's I have a couple cow hides and a few deer hides in it as well. I really need to get on building fleshing posts. I wish I knew of someone nearby that could show me the process hands on and any tips and tricks I can learn along the way. I'm on the Autistic Spectrum. While it's nice to watch videos, I really do learn better from someone that actually tans the hides. That would really be better way to learn for me. But yeah, I do think to, that it would be something that would be great to learn for trade or something if economy ever does collapse. I don't think we are too far off from that, anyhow...
I was gifted 2 longhorn hides. Fresh. I watched many videos and am combing processes. anxious to see hiw they turn out!
I buy the American Stockman salt. You can buy 50 pounds of salt for usually under 10. Its non iodized. Just picked up my hide today. So excited about doing the process myself.
Non iodized is important
I Think after 8July i could buy cow hide (raw)like for 3or4 dollars of ur country.
Clinton! Just found this video, eagerly awaiting part two from New South Wales, Australia!
Great work! Cant wait to see how they turn out! Like the multiple endings ; )
Hello Mr. Miner! Enjoyed the great video and appreciate the message you are sending. Your a genuine Guy. GOD bless…..
rob jen thank you so much
@@clintonminer7636 Thank You Sir!!
Great work I personally would recommend buying one bulk salt it’ll save you in the long run, I can’t find the part two?
That third Subscribe and prayer talk earned you my scrip... Lol well done
You can buy a 50 bag of fine salt for livestock for like 4.00, that seems like it would be way more economical and convenient
Yes. Just read the bag. You dont want rock salt. Get the fine mix
Soooo where's the part 2?...
Hi my name is adam ....i have never worked on a cow hide befor but my cousin gave me a new project to do ..i whish they haven't because i dont have all the stuff i need to work on a hide any ways this is my first cow hide im doing right now..yes i worked on deer hide and coyote hide but nothing ever prepared me for this..what i wanted to tell you is that i always wash my hides first to get them clean up thin i put salt on them and leave it alone for 2 or 3 days and i raise them up to let it dry out ,and its also good for the dogs so they dont try to still your hide.
Not finding part 2.... wondering how you broke it after tanning. Thats where I am at now
Hey man, I’m getting a cow hide from the butcher for nothin next week, do you got a part 2 up? I tried checking on your channel but couldn’t find it
I just found a black cow hide in the road that I know has not been there for more than 8hrs(evening). The sun has been down the whole time. I brought it with me and laid it out in the bed skin up. It’s cleaned well of meat and only smells like cow manure not rotten. Can I still save it?!
Hi Clinton, I have a few cow hides to tan, They have been sitting on top of each other for a few years. Should I start by Soaking them in some oxalic acid, for a few days to clean them up?
Rip
which chemical use for preservation and how many days preservation? have any difficult for tanning process?
I love your videos Clinton!!
You are a wonderful guy Clinton, you and yours are always in my prayers!!
Awesome video! I can’t find part 2. I just got a hide and want to start on it!
Part 2 is up and part 3 will be up by tomorrow
@@clintonminer7636 i can't find part 2 or 3 what is the title of them
Mr. Clinton, I also can't find! Help us please.
I wonder if there are millinials know this skill. . . RUclips help preserved some skills. . Thnx for the video.
Looking forward to seeing the rest of the process.
Tysm, we have a few very old cows and a sickly calf that I'm planning to skin when they pass for their hides ^^
I'm going to do my 1st hide in December the 1st or 2nd we have a steer coming and and they're gonna kill it and we're gonna get the hide of course the stair belongs to us but we're gonna get the hide and cure it and I'm gonna follow your steps if there's anything else I need to know please let me know thank you
Did make a second video of this?
I'm in the process of doing my first one. It was almost 200lbs, and hardly had any meat left on it. I bought Sea90 but soon realized that it was too expensive, Sodium Chloride pool salt from Walmart was $7.48 for a 40lb bag. It was even cheaper before the 2022-23 inflation.
Great to know
@@clintonminer7636I used Clorox brand but they sell Morton as well, just a few cents more. Both were pure Sodium Chloride. The Sea90 salt I bought was $50 for 50lbs. It's more for gardens and pastures but good enough to eat. The pool salts says not for consumption on the bag.

@@HiddenVisionTattoo I think so! You usually have 24 before the meat breaks down and the fat goes rancid, when the actual flesh starts to rot is when the hair will release. Get salt on it asap. I did find that when I thought I did a good job on fleshing, I needed to do more. It can be done after being salted too, you'll just waste a little salt. I have seen that others take a grinding wheel to them with great success, I haven't tried that method. I only used a cheap draw knife from Amazon that I usually use to debark logs. Good luck! Keep us posted.
I laid out a large tarp and had a smooth log that I worked scraping the hide around with the draw knife, then smoothed it out, washed both sides with dish soap, and re-salted the flesh side. I'll scrape it some more then soak it in a tub of Hi-Yield aluminum sulfate and water, do some hole repairs, egg yolk rub, rinse, and put it on a stretcher frame, then see how it all worked out. I could honestly probably use it right now as a rug but it's just really stiff.
I am interested how to do it I can get cow heights anytime I want buddy from Nebraska
Maybe pressure wash or scrape before salting. Would ice melt salt work?
Pressure wash is a great idea
Where is the Part 2 ,?
Do we have a part two???
Good stuff! Thank you!
I always look forward to your next video
+myADDmind thanks
Nice, I just got a black angus bull hide from a customer. Too heavy for me to pick up so I had to have it cut up into smaller pieces.
I tell people it’s like lifting a 100 pound wet noodle
@@clintonminer7636 I had a girlfriend like that once ... 😋
Where is part 2?
I'm sure someone already told you this...but, feed stores have 50lb bags of sale for under $10.
2:21 lol, I don't think the cow can lose much more weight xD
😂😂😂
Not even skin and bones anymore, just plain skin!
Who showed Uncle uploading vids lol !! Great content next time stand in view naughty
I can't find part 2
This is what we should be watching not phones
We have a hide we got and froze....how does the process differ?
Where is part 2
Hi, I’m just doing my own hide can I just salt it until I get enough of the leader tanning solution or do I need to wait for it to dry out?
Have you finished tanning?
Why do you fold the hides up after salting? I salted my longhorn hide yesterday, and left it laying out since I have no animals around to bother it. Do I need to fold it up?
Tricia Adams I actually hung it over a fence. I folded it to be able to lift it into my truck
Did you finish the hide? Or a part2?
krystal lazcano coming soon. Part 2
Hey I was just wondering so I have a cow that is my favorite and I was wondering if she dies of natural causes can I still have her hide tanned or does she have to be butchered to have her hide tanned
I can't imagine any reason the hide could not be recovered and tanned, unless the condition that took the cow's life was something you needed to guard against.
Is it possible to send us a whole cow hide
Are you able to use this method to make fur blankets?
Is there a part two?
What did we do with these hides? I have a cow hide laying out right now and I'm looking for directions on the next steps
Brody Burt they are waiting for warmer
Weather to finish the process. When that time comes the next videos will show my efferts
Clinton Miner how are you storing them? Freezer?
Brody Burt did you salt or freeze your hide? It will be easier later if you are able to flesh before salting. But salting before fleshing works as well. Check out the Skillcult channel- he has a lot of very valuable tanning info
Brody Burt - also, if the hide is salted there is no need to freeze. But it’s very important that salted hides be allowed to drain -if they are allowed to sit in the fluid that the salt pulls out the hair will slip. It wouldn’t hurt to salt once, let it drain, then re-salt. Again, I highly recommend checking out the Skillcult channel- he has taught me SO much
@@TJHutchExotics I'll check it out I didn't salt it, I froze it with the weather but it has warmed up since and I went ahead and did my best to soak and flesh the hide.
Wheres part 2?
How do I find part 2
So once you pour the salt and fold it, do you leave this just sitting outside? I don't have a walk-in freezer. I'm trying to figure out how to do my first hide.
Thanks in advance
part 2?
Thanks Sir 😌
Thank you for watching
Tip: if ya fold them long ways the halvs did together!
Good video
Thanks
Part 2???
why this dude looking like the KFC Colonel lol
The cows told me to let you know to "Eat More Chicken!!!"
I use 25 to 50 lb of salt per hide whether it's Buffalo or cow
Can someone help me find part 2 and part3
Your shot was not in frame so we could only see the back 1/3 of the hide. Maybe you should have dragged the hide further back so we could get a good look at the entire hide. If you're going to continue posting videos on RUclips, you might want to consider having an assistant on the camera or check the position of the camera before recording to get the best shot. Audio sounded ok though. Even with your moving around It remained consistently unaffected and easy to hear.
Terrence Lemire great suggestions. This was one of my earliest videos and one that I did on the fly, at that because I had to get the hides taken care of. I am working on my craft and think I’m getting a bit better all the time. I will take your suggestions very seriously
You know you're out of shape when you get winded pouring salt.
I couldn’t believe you are using one pound containers of Morton Salt... they appreciate you very, very, much... you must be wealthy! I buy salt in 50 pound sacks, put it in a drop fertilizer spreader, and get serious. Oh well... to each their own!
We can't see the top
Im disappointed to see there are no follow up videos to this one. Ill have to look elsewhere for a how to on tanning a cowhide my first time.
interesting.
Looking for part 2 ????
When, When we have a collapse. It will be sooner rather than later, there can be no reconciliation
You should use at least 25 pounds buy it by the bag much cheaper the more the better is up to you I am a tanner of fur bearer animals and that is why I am saying this to you ...Not trying to be smart alley just what I know nice video thankls ..
Great input
