- This meeting took place at the Lijersdraai water hole in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Nationalpark November 2019
At that time there was still water at the old Lijersdraai waterhole. The hyena den in the loop behind the water hole still existed.

In a bizzare twist of fate that hyena was lucky those lioness were there to distract the other hyenas and keep their attention away from him. Looks like he was in big trouble otherwise.
Lioness was so chill, knowing that the hyenas were intent on their own affairs.

They were attacking a rival maybe a male because he was small and females run the hyena matriarch being the larger than the males. Their bullying a male from a rival clan and the male is taking a chance moving towards the lion knowing the hyenas won't attack as aggressively while near the lion. It's the equivalent of a blue whale using a boat for cover while trying to flee a pod of orcas.
The bullied hyena appears to be counting on the Lioness to save it.
That was odd. Hyenas attack rival male near lioness, hyenas sleep near lioness along with the rival male, and then all is peaceful until the angry sister arrives to rile her up for a game of let's chase the hyenas. Very weird and confusing encounter.

Very strange meeting @2:04. It seemed that the boss of hyenas talked with the lion about exchange information say hunting schedule in the coming days or settle down somethings due to previous confrontation.
Yeah animals recognize other animals just like people do each other. A matriarch and a lioness have unspoken rules about getting involved in clan and pride business. I've often seen hyenas spectate lion and leopard fights and they never get involved. They have no reason to.

I hope the smaller hyena wasn't harmed, the lioness's reaction was priceless, seeing the hyenas ignoring her and harassing the other hyena, the lioness must be thinking this is some kind of hierarchy dispute within the hyena clan so hung around sniffing the area and watching on from perhaps both curiosity and entertainment 🤔
I LOVE lions. They are so distinguished and regal. I always love to see Papa lions coming to the rescue. And I love "He who greets with fire". My favorite lion of all time.

very interesting sighting.
My eyes betray me...I saw what could have been a water trickle over some stone material. But did not see a 'waterhole'. Maybe the waterhole fills a little more when the annual rains hit or when the tattered windmill is able to produce energy from the wind and thus possibly produce water. But what's more interesting is the title of the video. No confrontation between the two premier predators...now that is a rarity, eh? Aside, very enjoyable video of a semi-large hyena clan and a few lazy 'just hanging out' lions. Peace Out.
Should change the title to hyenas confronting a solitary hyena. This was nothing to do with lions. They were the sideshow in this video. I guess they used lions in the title to try to attract more viewers..

The Hyenas were nervous that the lions were even close by...to the point they were fighting each other. Then, at the end, the lions just ran off.
The Hyenas were preparing to kill one of their own and the lions did not like each other either. Plenty of hate going on. Can we all get along !

The really interesting thing in this video is the interaction going on between the hyenas, with one of them showing very submissive and at the same time defensive behaviour, although the other hyenas didn't seem to be overly aggressive... Wish you would have filmed them instead of a lioness doing nothing. ;P

Actually he's using the lioness as cover. Knowing they won't be as agressive because they have to watch the lion also. So it's impossible for the clan to focus entirely on him. Smart but risky move. Had that been her sister who seems to hate hyenas as she's seen waking her sister up to give chase, that hyena would've been dead. But on the other hand hyenas will band together to kill a lioness so she did right by not attacking because she was outnumbered. Has she attacked the rival male all of the hyenas would have turned on her and she would be in big trouble.

The lioness senses the suffering of the male hyena but shows no compassion or protection ,why risk your life for a hyena just as a hyena is never gunna save a lioness..
