  • On this episode on collection spotlights, we are looking at the Bedford CA Dormobile.
Produced through 1952-1969 throughout the 17 years of its life the Dormobile came in many different styles on many different chassis.
Kindly donated by the Stuart family who had won the Dormobile back in the 1960s from the local P&J paper as well as £100 spending money. It was kindly donated to us as they did not want to sell it on but keep it in a museum for all to see.
Come down to the museum where we open again on the 29th March 2024 where you can find this next our Rover police car.
Let us know what you would like to see next on Collection Spotlights.

Nice video. My family had a Dormobile conversion on a 1960s VW van, and it's nice to see how the Dormobile components are very similar. The side hinged popup roof with two fixed glass panels, two opening translucent skylights, hammocks/bunks, and the striped canvas part are identical, though I guess the glass fibre roof moulding was different to suit the roof shapes of the original vans. Inside it had very similar metal framed seats, which folded down to form beds and also shifted sideways (while remaining fixed to the floor) to form a double bed. All four seats were in the passenger area, while the front seats were the original VW ones. The forward pair of Dormobile seats also rotated to face the rear. The kitchen fittings were in the same style, though obviously positioned differently.

Its fair to say the more you look around the Dormobile the more you will find! Shame that in its place this year we are not able to open the roof tent to display the Dormobile in its proper stationary display.
Defiantly a favourite here at the museum however!

I love EVERYTHING about the vehicle apart from the crappy lino on the floor? Just a plain colour would make this bus even more amazing! dx

These were always better than the VW T1 in there day, as indeed today the Vauxhall Vivaro is better than the Transporter.
