      I like to move to Malaysia, but not sure if I am eligible under the new MM2H. I have a lot of equity and crypto, and my income from the yield of that is very irregular. So would I need to prove income, and if so: how would I do that? Or I can just show that I am wealthy enough and put a large sum in a bank account for MM2H and be ok?

      No. I tried several times. Short of marrying a Muslim woman there and dying a premature death like so many of my colleagues who did, it is next to impossible unless you are willing to splurge on bad business investments or overpriced, foreigner designated real estate, it is a no! The reason why you felt Malaysian bureaucracy a breeze is because they're extremely racist. Malaysian govt officials treat you 1st on the basis of your nationality and origin 2nd on the basis of your skin color. In your case, you fit in their perfect sweet spot because of your American origin and your white skin color. Unfortunately for many of us as ex-pats who have darker skin tones and belong to regional nationalities, their behavior is the worst.
    I spent 8 years in Malaysia and while I say Malaysians are generally very friendly and loving people, dealing with the Govt officials was always a dreadful experience. I was never an Illegal resident, paid as much as 24% of my income in Taxes yet was treated awfully because of my skin color and nationality. Malaysians are not Racist, they're loving and accepting. The politicians of this country however survive by inciting racism among its public.
    Those of you who don't know even for Malaysians themselves there's a different treatment criterion for every race. Malays are the first priority, then comes the Chinese, and then only the Malaysian Indians. If you ever get a chance of visiting one of their govt hospitals you'll see they have this class category for their own citizens and then only there's a fourth class category which is for foreigners. Hearing about news coming out of Malaysia about some absurd visa changes isn't really a surprise if you happen to know the internal politics of the country.

      Thanks for the background and insight epsecially "the politicians survive by inciting racism among its public".
      Apart from the categories at hospitals you mention, in the foreigner category, there's an further unspoken hierarchy with levels of acceptable 'foreignness'.
      I don't think I'm overreaching... I'm guessing that another layer to this is to prevent too many non-Islamic north Asians from entering, regardless of whether they are from the PRC or not.

    • @belalehsen
      @belalehsen 2 года назад +2

      @@planetnomadicpersonal I think that's fairly subjective to personal preference. I felt that their preference is tilted more towards non-muslim asian foreigners. But that too isn't a huge factor I'd say. As it hardly effects your day to day life in Malaysia. Your passport color actually matters. Show govt officials your blue passport or a maroon passport and they'll even wash your toes.
      A Canadian Muslim colleague of mine submitted his passport for an employment pass and he got it in 21 days. I however got mine in the same category in 6 months and had to provide a ton of more papers than he did for his visa application.

      Do you think Singapore is the same? I had an interesting experience when I was working in a Singapore shipyard. I'm Caucasian by the way. About seven years ago, I supervised a team of six Malay Singaporeans on a 2 month contract. Early in the project I asked one of the team members to arrange for a container to be craned up to the ship. He came back after an hour and said, "Andy. You have a white face. It'll be quicker if you do it." Sure enough he was right.
      One month into the contract, my team were denied entry at the security gate. The Malay Singaporean security demanded to see their contracts, insurance documents and other paperwork. I was allowed to pass through without showing these documents. I explained that we're all part of the same team. The respond from the security guard, word for word: "Don't you compare yourself with them." I was astounded. My team and the security guards are both Malay Singaporeans. One the guys in my team explained it to me. He said, "In Singapore, Chinese and whites are at the top, Malays in the middle, Indians at the bottom." I noticed more and more how the class (or caste) system worked there.

    Malaysia lockdowns were very strict. It sounds like you were not there during most of that time. If you only want to spend a few months each year in Malaysia, then you should just use the 90 day visa on arrival, which is totally free. You don't have to invest 1 million ringgit.

    Andrew, I've been a MM2h holder for the past 7 years and yes I can meet the new requirements. But what I have an issue with is the way we the MM2h visa holders were thrown under the bus. They promised auto 10 year visa upon renewal that's why I bought a condo , car etc. Will I stay ? Like they say in Malaysia "What to do lah" Looks like I'll the only MM2H holder in Malaysia! As of yesterday looks like the govt is going to close the Sarawak MM2H loop hole. According to the TEG Expat magazine survey 95% of the MM2H holders do no qualify on the new policy. I feel for them, they bought property etc. Thailand Elite visa is going gang busters now. Like you say "Go where your treated the best"

    • @shotelco
      @shotelco 3 года назад +12

      This channel was great, until it wasn't. We too also have Sarawak MM2H for past 5 years which allowed us to buy a condo in Johor. What Andrew doesn't talk about here is the issue of "Trust". You and I and all of the other _EXISTING_ MM2H holders had a contract that gave us 10 years (or 5) renewable. Now, that is gone. This is a trust issue with all "pay-for-residence" programs. The MY changes expose the Fact that none of the International "pay-for-residence" programs can be trusted. Even if we could meet the new requirements, we would be stupid to do so now. What stops MY from modifying the new MM2H again Tomorrow?? Where you need $5M donation? Or next week it's $100M deposit? Without Grandfathering existing MM2H holders.
      Then, one of the MY officials said (paraphrasing) regarding the affect of new MM2H on real estate values: "...oh, of the 50,000 MM2H holders, only 10,000 own property, and if all 10,000 have to sell it won't impact RE values, so its really no big deal" It is a Big Deal for those who trusted MY and their MM2H.
      The way I see it, residency programs are dead. In order for one to "go where they are treated best" one needs hard citizenship. And even that is suspect.

      @@timmyhiggins5220 It's an American slang term that has been around for almost 100 years. Back during American prohibition (illegal to buy/consume alcohol - between 1920 and 1933), illegal sales of alcohol were performed by organized groups of criminals...or gangs. The law enforcement, especially the Federal Government would try and shut (or quickly bust up) these gangs down *_as fast as possible,_* thus the term gang busters. And interestingly, the term "busted"; when law enforcement arrested someone is still commonly used today.

    As a Malaysian, I'm saddened by this change that disproportionately affects such a small percentage of the population. Even if my country wants to have greater requirements to further get more MM2H holders to further contribute, the asks are quite unreasonable for most middle-income individuals and it would be better if the requirements were placed more in line with middle-income individuals who would be more likely to stay and contribute to the local economy rather than just wealthy investors who would treat the country as more of a vacation stay country. A monthly income just above our mean income of RM 28,000 or 30,000 that is also inclusive to income within the country and a more flexible deposit plan for those over 50 with or without income would serve the country much better than the current rule set forth by the system.
    Our country is beautiful, inexpensive for those abroad, and has so much potential in attracting a number of middle income people who would like to live in an uncomplicated and relaxed place in the world such as Malaysia. We have out fair share of problems, that's undeniable but our progress in trying to address them is far more than any other large Southeast Asian nation. The latest results out of highly vaccinated populations like Israel show that these vaccines lose efficacy rather quickly. This could result in the need for boosters every 6-12 month, possibly indefinitely. While there are some really horrific side effects from these vaccines, it's a very small risk. But does that risk increase with every booster? If you're not over 60 and in good health, there's little risk to you from covid. As time has gone on, doctors now know how to treat it better. There are good treatments for it that, especially if started early, can save people from dangerous symptoms. Its an unstable program. All you have to do is wait till they have over-built condo developments at the $250k level and they reduce the threshold to reduce the overhang. Then you can get into the MM2H through their need to reduce the over hang (especially on langkawi). When property becomes over built..all requirements are flexable untill things stablize. This will probably happen in Turkey as well. Both governments are unstable and continually cause financial instability.

There is some exception when you setup an offshore company which can be 100% owned by a foreigner with the condition you will not do any business within Malaysia .

The people are great, in general, but the unelected government is beyond...... Penang was a great base to explore Asia but since it became a prison island 20 months ago, no. The government restrictions have destroyed what made it great. Many stalls in the excellent food courts have disappeared forever, hotels only exist as quarantine centres. People who made their living off the tourist industry in Georgetown are scratching around for food like pigeons. Very sad to see. Love your videos by the way, very informative, honest and amusing.

      Hmm, my original comment disappeared. Apologies if it reappears together with this one. My parents (late 70s) are in the 2nd year of their second 10-year stay on the MM2H. My Mum was born and raised in Malaysia. She loves it there; many of her childhood friends are still there and extended family. The social network is what makes her life meaningful. She had to naturalise to another citizenship when she married my father. I had been considering MM2H for my adult child with a borderline condition as she needs the family support network when I'm gone (dead) but given the medical totalitarianism that's becoming clearer in Southeast Asia, I'm out of ideas. I personally like Indonesia and Laos a lot, mandates aside. Parts of South America and some former Eastern bloc countries are looking pretty good but not for my child who would struggle on their own. By the time the end of my parents' 2nd 10-year MM2H rolls around, they will in their late 80s. I don't think they can meet the insane MYR40,000 monthly income requirement. They actually lived in South America part of the year during their working lives (based in Argentina and travelling extensively all over the continent) but that's out for them.
      May I know where you're leaving to? @Paul Davies and @David Richards, and any current holders of MM2H leaving reading this? Thanks in advance.

    Better options in Spain and Portugal... PR status in shorter time. Malaysia you can live for 30 years and still not qualify for PR status. Plus for Malaysia: people and food. Better infrastructure than other Asian countries such as the Philippines and Vietnam. Cost of living is not as cheap as it was in the past. Banks are safe but ringgit is not a strong currency at this time.

      @@TheJoezaidan you're forgetting 0 capital gains (except local real estate)
      I know someone personally who was pissing away 100,000 usd a year in Capital Gains before he renounced his citizenship.
      A lot of high earning business owners don't even take a particularly high salary.
      And if you're using a Trifecta method like Andrew advocates, Malaysia only taxes you on the percentage of your Earned Income that matches the percentage of the year you spend in Malaysia.
      Say your salary is 180,000 USD, 1/3 year spent in Malaysia as a Tax Resident gets 60,000 USD taxed at up to 24%
