An 80286, EGA graphics and a sound card like AdLib or external Roland MT-32 device got PC gaming into the ballpark of Amiga and Atari ST. It would take MCGA/VGA graphics and the SoundBlaster to finally surpass them. Some other EGA era games from around 1989 that made a mark on me were Silpheed, Falcon AT, Battletech: The Crescent Hawk's Inception, and the original MechWarrior. Those early, low poly graphics in MechWarrior were cool for the time and it was exciting to launch a volley of lasers and missiles at an opponent! The street racer Vette was also around then but I think the idea was better than what could be pulled off.

Test Drive, Cycles, Space Quests (and also other Quests like Police and King's), Budokan, Sim City, Indy 500- yep, we played them all! The best of the best! Although the games nowadays, or even those written in the past 10 or 15 years, do not bring so much fun as back in the 90s. Maybe also because it wasn't always just run (click) and play, but had to spend some time editing some "system" files for the game to run at all.

For me, Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain from Lucasfilm Games would on top of my list of best games from 1989. I log countless hours piloting Spitfire and Messerschmitt Bf 109! What a great and fun arcade flight sim!!! It was the direct predecessor of the X-Wing & Tie Fighter series.

Rick Dangerous - soooo many hours
    Pipe Dream - !!!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - such an iconic game, and speed players favorite
MinerVGA - was written in BASIC, the first game I ever "hacked"

Wow. So there is a version of Bubble Bobble with Adlib sound? My copy only seems to play PC speaker sound. Now I need to find a new version. So many hours listening to that shrill theme tune playing the 2-play mode with my siblings. I stopped playing it once I get my 286 though - mainly because the 286 had a much louder PC speaker than my XT. So the sound went from slightly grating to almost painful.

And it's one of my personal top 10 games on both C64 and NES!

Very solid list! I got my first PC - an 8mhz 8086 but one with VGA in 1989. The first three ‘serious’ games of that year I got I won on a competition - outrun, Indiana Jones and the last crusade graphic adventure and … battlehawks 1942. The last one was an excellent game - I spent a lot of time playing that and it was a really satisfying early flight combat game. You could play as either the US or Japan in the pacific war.
Also I absolutely loved Indianapolis 500. I ‘acquired’ a copy of that one by somehow having a blank floppy in my pocket that ended up with it on after a trip to a local Pc shop that had the game installed on a demonstration PC. I have no idea how the game got on the floppy 😁 but I spent hours and hours trying to get a faster and faster lap record by tweaking the car.

@@turrican4d599 the Amiga sounded incredible no doubt about it!! But the VGA was more capable than the A500 and the Soundblaster sounded amazing with games that took advantage of it.
IMHO when the 80386 started to became popular and games started to use it, the superiority was huge. In fact, in late '93 when Doom was released even the A1200 became obsolete not only the A500. The PC was way better in every aspect.
And I'm and was an Amiga fan myself, the original Amiga was the best computer ever created but in the 90s Commodore didn't know how to keep up with technology.... the PC trounced it by mid 90s.

Congratulations on your 20K subs 🙂
You mentioned some belters in here, had no idea Arkanoid 2 was so different compared to the arcade version- the DOS version looks REALLY fun. When it comes to the pong style games, I liked the POING series on the Amiga, there was something special that I can't put my finger on it.
Was quite surprised you added OutRun to that list. Love the series, but with the Amiga version being so poor- I couldn't imagine a decent version on the PC.
Personally would've added Stunt Car Racer, Street Rod, Nuclear War, Wings of Fury and PK ZIP to your list. PKZIP best game "storage utility" ever 🙂

      @itsaPIXELthing  9 месяцев назад +1

Yeah, PKZIP! :) Ahhhhh! The memories! Great titles you mentioned there! I loved Stunt Car Racer on the Amiga. Not that much on PC, but it's still a great game on the system and almost made it to this list :) Thanks for the support, mate! Cheers!

You missed 'Quest For Glory 1 - So You Want To Be A Hero (1989)(Sierra Online)'. That is still a great game and I go back to play it on dosbox every couple of years. And you say you like racing games, and you missed 'Street Rod', a game were can tune up your car, buy new parts, race for money or pink slips and get better and faster cars, and challenge the Hot Rod King for his car. You must have missed this gem back then.
I would have started in 88 with Pool of Radiance, one of the first D&D games.
    Some of my personal recommendations
1990: Ultima VI The False Prophet
1991: Jones in the Fast Lane
    Sid Meier's Civilization
    1993: Wing Commander Privateer
    1994: X Com Ufo Defense
    Warcraft: Orcs & Humans
    Sid Meier's Colonization
If these games aren't already on your lists, take the time to track them down and give them a play.
