    Hey guys! I hope this video is useful to some people. Just a note obviously these prices (from eBay) are not set in stone and the best bet is always to avoid Buy It Now and try to bid on auctions. There will be a sister video eventually called "Getting the Best Video Game Deals on eBay."
    Homebrew can be found at atarisales.com, AtariAge.com and gooddealgames.com along with new and sealed 2600 and 7800 games!
    When buying the UAV or an AV mod alone you have to install it yourself which requires finding a guide along with soldering and disassembly skills. Just an FYI.
    Also best electronics website is www.best-electronics-ca.com
    If you need help ordering please let me know and I might be able to explain it a bit more.
    Thanks for watching guys. Pinned comments will be updated as needed!

    Just found your channel. I’m really enjoying it. I’m a new 7800 owner as of a week ago. I have a huge collection of 2600 stuff (that I’ve been accumulating my whole life) and a pretty good 5200 collection as well. So, I’m super excited to get into this new to me Atari console. I bought mine on eBay without the hookups but bought an upgraded power supply from Best Electronics for about $21 plus shipping and am currently using an NES RF switch. Can’t wait to get some games!

      I can't believe I forgot about best electronics for the power supplies! But I'm glad to have comments like yours to hopefully help remind people.
      The 7800 is great! It gets a bad rap because of it's small library of games that didn't really take advantage of the hardware, but most of the games are great!
      Be sure to check out my rankings of 78 homebrews video tomorrow as they are a great reason to own a 7800 today! And thanks for the kind words about the channel! Hope you enjoy the content for a long time to come!

    This buyers guide is a great idea. I really have not seen anything like it before for the 7800. Best Electronics definitely deserves more spotlight and I am glad you referenced this old school site. It’s almost a “historic experience” talking on the phone with the man who bought truck loads of gear from the bankrupt Atari and also developed enhanced controllers. I really feel like it’s the 7800’s time to shine and this will help.

      Thank you for the kind words. I've bought off best several times and those emails were some of my actual interactions with him. But no doubt the process turns off the "stick it in my cart and moves on people" and that's fine. He's gotten a bad rep for that reason but he's always been honest to a fault and perfectly cordial to me.
      I hope the 7800 finally gets a turn in the collectors spotlight. It seems like people ignored it for too long. As always thanks for watching!

      Pricecharting is a valuable but dated resource, as most prices online on forums or auction sites are going to be higher. As working units dwindle, costs will only go up.

    Great video. I'm from Australia where the joypad controller is much more common than the pro-line joystick. Something new 7800 owners should know is that button 2 on the 7800 joypad can be unreliable for 7800 games that use buttons 1 and 2 independently for separate functions. 2 of the 5 joypad controllers I have owned had a non-working button 2, however both buttons will still work fine for all 2600 games and the 7800 games that use just 1 button function. If buying a joypad online, see if you can confirm with the seller that buttons 1 and 2 are working. It is also common to find them missing the thumb stick that screws onto the dpad. A replacement can be very difficult to source, so try to find controllers that include the thumb stick. They sold very few 7800s in Australia. Even games considered "common" in the US and Europe can be hard to find and are expensive.

    • @TheAtariNetwork
      @TheAtariNetwork  Год назад +2

      Great information! This is definitely the kind of stuff people need to know!
      If you're in the US I still recommend trying best electronics as their controllers are rebuilt and guaranteed.

    I kept the psu for the 7800. When the main brick started to show higher voltages, I snipped off the connector and put it on a new brick. Correct voltage is as essential as cooling, e.g. hestsinks affixed to the microchips.
    Even improper storage of boards can be detrimental if in high humidity conditions...
    But I'd have someone do the UAV mod. The original hardware can be fragile and difficult to work with due to aging combined with lower-quality circuit boards.

    Retro gameboy pad for the win. I bought these a year or two ago and it transformed my 7800. I had a lot of nostalgia having grown up with a 7800, along with a 5200 and NES (I was spoiled, just happened to be the youngest with two older brothers and an older sister). I remembered playing my 7800 for hours and hours with my sister, along with playing 2600 games on it. The controller, even as a kid, i remember not being as good as the NES. I couldnt put it in to words back then, but playing Double Dragon on my 7800 and then going to the NES made it very noticeable. After buying a 7800 when i got back in to retro collecting, it mainly lived off nostalgia and was hadly ever used. Once i got one of those gamepads, i could play (and wanted to keep playing more) 9 inning games of Pete Rose Baseball. Anyone on the fence about one of these gamepads, dont wait, go out and get one!

    I personally wouldn't throw away recommendations for games like Ninja Golf or Midnight Mutants, you'll only find high prices online. If you only shop at physical retro game stores like I do, you'll find 7800 games are more reasonable in price. I'd recommend Ballblazer, Desert Falcon, Alien Brigade, Commando, Scrapyard Dog, Basketbrawl, and Fatal Run. The ones I'd say to stay away from would be Crack'd, Jinks, Ikari Warriors, Impossible Mission, Super Huey UH-IX, and Double Dragon. Those are really lacking in fun.

    • @TheAtariNetwork
      @TheAtariNetwork  Год назад

      I always think checking local is a good idea but I can't promise that people will find them locally and I can't assume prices if they do. The point was to keep things reasonably priced to start while they decide if the console is for them. Of course they can get whatever they want, but I don't want to recommend 80, 100, and 200 dollar games to start.
      I don't agree with your list of games to stay away from either. Ikari Warriors is a great port of that game and plays very well. But maybe I'm in the minority there. After all, I'm a bit biased being the 7800 Pro Gamer and all lol

    Just curious but do you know if the Atari ST mouse would work with those light gun games on the 7800? I noticed in your video that during the light gun portion there was a cursor on screen (which I imagine is for playing with a regular controller) since the Atari ST mouse would have the same connector as the joystick and light gun controllers, it dawned on me that maybe it might work. And if it does, I think it would move the cursor much more quickly than a standard controller. What do you think?

    • @TheAtariNetwork
      @TheAtariNetwork  Год назад

      Ok so according to a quick Google search an Atari ST will not work stock standard but there have been talks on various forums (ie AtariAge) that an adapter should be theoretically possible given how the movement is pinned out. I couldn't find an actual adapter or pin out but it might've been done before. I think your right that it would be much easier to play with an ST mouse or any that could potentially work with the 7800, but the control pad method isn't bad. Just maybe a bit slow. Thanks for the idea I'll do some more research at some point!

    A silly question but is that picture of Jack T. one of the only photos of him on the net? Seems like all the videos I've ever seen that refer to Atari and any Atari product end up referring to Jack T. and use that very same photo!!... Lol haha 😂 Then again he doesn't have a very pleasant mug!..

      @TheAtariNetwork  Год назад +1

      In my search for Jack T pictures that's the only one he seems pleasant in lol. Plus it's him at Atari. I'll tell you what, I'll make it my goal to feature a different picture of Jack next time, I'll dig deep and try to find one you've never seen and tell me if I succeeded or not!

    the 7800 was my favorite game system, replacing Colecovision. Then it got knocked-0ut of first place by Sega Genesis.

      yeah, the video games of my collection started with Odyssey II and ended with Xbox One. Atari 2600 was not mine, but i did play it in 2nd grade at my neighbor's house.@@TheAtariNetwork

    Great Video!
    I love 7800, but you already know that 😅.
    I bought mine about 3 years ago.
    So far I have 19 titles and each one has been great fun.
    Desert Falcon and Food Fight were the first games to attract me to the system. As well as the Namco, Williams, and Nintendo ports.
    You see, I had an NES back in the day. So i felt like owning an 8 bit system again but wanted something different. So i took the Atari route. Each game has been great challenge and fun.
    Atari is 🌈FRESH.
    Theres still a few more official titles I want to grab before getting into the homeboobs. But darn am i excited for them!
    The game I can show off most in is Pole Position II. I hold the world record for Seaside as well as the Suzuka track. Put many many hours into that. 🏁 🏎
    Tower Toppler has been an awesome challenge, i have the patience for it. Still 2 more towers for me to master, ill be studying your get through guide before trying again.
    I look foward to seeing you beat One-On-One 🏀 on Pro, at the moment thats a SUPER challenge for me.
    Centipede 2 player Co-Op is up there with my best multiplayer experiences ever.
    Ballblazer has been a true hit with friends, i heard one say it's the grandfather to Rocket League.
    Mario Bros is great 2 player action too.
    Speaking on Nintendo, the 3 Nintendo brand games was a reason i didnt go with Sega Master System. As DK, DK Jr, and MB are must haves for an 8 bit collection.
    Commando 7800 looks and sounds better than NES.
    Xevious is likely my favorite game on the 78.
    I could go on and on with great things to say about each game I've played.
    But yup.. plenty of homeboobs will be in my future! I have major catching up to do. Theres always something to look foward to.
    One last thing..
    The styling of the 7800 is magnifico !
    I get enjoyment each day simply glancing at the system.
    If a system brings you happiness without even turning it on, it's a keeper ❤.

      You'll love the home boobs as we all do. They're the best especially on the 7800 😂
      So many great games you mentioned! As a kid I was enthralled with how the background would move in and out of sight on pole position II especially on courses like seaside! Looks like I'm going to see how you did it because despite my history with it, I'm still not very good!
      Tower Toppler has been a favorite of mine since I picked it up around 2009 or so. The Nintendo license games since childhood!
      But games like Food Fight are system sellers for a reason! I'll keep an eye on your videos I really like your dedication to beating records in these games. Maybe one day I can give you some competition!
