Recasting the Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix

  • There are few properties as beloved as Narnia which require a live-action. Disney attempted but never continued. Netflix said they're going to produce one but it's been years. Well, today I fan cast the 4 roles of the Pevensie children, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy.

I'm kind of torne regarding my opinions on a new adaptation.
I loved the BBC series from 1988-90; adapting the four first book for TV.
Then very much enjoyed the more recent the three movies, of the first three books.
      .
In some ways wish a reboot to continue with the last four books.
I'd hate for a reboot to stop after a few books again.
I believe The Magicians Nephew is important as a prequel to understand Narnia.
The Silver Chair and Last Battle are the direct sequels to the main story line from the first 3 books
While The Hose and His Boy; feels kind of like a spinoff/sidestory to the first book; also to better understand Narnia.
I want a reboot to include all 7, but in some ways especially the last 4.

I actually just recently rewatched all the Narnia movies, and they were somewhat better than I remember. I already really liked LTWATW, but Prince Caspian was surprisingly really good. Dawn Treader was okay, I could tell they were somewhat struggling, but they did the best they could. And I was pretty sad when it ended, knowing that they weren't able to get to the other books.
But as for this video, nicely done. I don't know any of these actors (save for Susan's actor), and I think that's a good thing. We can actually see them become these characters. I really hope we get a proper adaptation someday, and I wouldn't mind taking inspiration from the films.

I was disappointed with the casting of Prince Caspian. The actor is older than the character in the original book. Book PC actually admired King Peter. pc is also younger has retained his innocence thus not threatened by KP. Also the book is meant for children. Movie PC and KP are just two egostistical, testosterone immature adults. Book PC respects KP. I think the movie writers forget that KP is supposed to be a wisened King , they made him an immature teenage boy.

Okay, I don't dislike any of your casting picks, although I'm not super familiar with any of them, but it's VERY clear that you either haven't actually read the books or you don't like/understand them. ALL of your commentary re: the character traits of the Pevensies seem drawn from the movies, not the books, and what little isn't from the movies sounds like it came from a Wikipedia page (Susan's hair is mentioned in a single, fairly obscure line, and she's very, very far from the "moral compass" of the group.) I would love to see more Narnia castings, but only if you are actually going to put work into understanding the characters and story as Lewis wrote them.

Narnia books are hard to adapt. They are children stories at heart, and making their adaptations appealing to the audience of all ages while still retaining joyful fairytale spirit of the original is challenging task. Andrew Adamson did a wonderful job with the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. Perfect balance between magic and maturity. With the second one Adamson tried too much to make it an adult film, basically changing DNA of the story. Third movie did try to shift back to its original fairy tale roots... but without Adamson the little magic, which was still retained in Prince Caspian, was gone as well. I see no point in remake. They should just go ahead with Silver Chair (unfortunately with re-casted Eustace), Magician's nephew and finish the "Last Stand" with the original actors reprising their roles as grown Pevensies. That is the only logical future of the franchise I see.

Ellise Chappell and Millie Brady spring to mind as they both have that aetherial look and have been stealing scenes with relatively weaker characters for years. I'd love to see either of them take on a villain like Jadis. Or Leah McNamara who has the chops for it, despite her age, though that might not be a problem for an immortal queen. Eleanor Tomlinson would also be interesting as a redheaded Jadis, or even Elizabeth Debicki. I'd like to see her switch between sweet and terrifying with Edmund.

This was a fun video, and I've often engaged in fantasy casting myself. Great picks for the most part.
I can't recall who said this, but while it's not my idea, I agree that it might be the best course of action. Anyway, what if you didn't recast the Pevensies?
The idea is that the Pevensies were done after The Dawn Treader, and the story would have continued with Eustace and Jill. The proposal is to start a new series with The Magician's Nephew, followed by A Horse and His Boy, which features the Pevensies as adults, and you could use the original cast for those roles.
The most complicated thing would be the handling of The Silver Chair and The Last Battle. You would have to recast Eustace, but perhaps it's a minor issue to overcome instead of starting over completely.

Given the track record of Hollywood today. They'll definitely cast a black guy for Peter, a lesbian Susan, an asian Edmund and a bisexual Lucy and all of them will be college age people. The witch will turn out to be a misunderstood woman who we're being controlled by a cis white male who will be the real villain of the movie.

Oh thank God! This is a Fancast not notice that Netflix was refucking the stories. If it’s up to them, like Amazon, they’ll take C.S. Lewis’s books and wokify them. Completely destroying any semblance of what the original stories are so that millions on kids can… “See themselves represented in the characters.” Lewis’s be damned. We must make everybody all warm and fuzzy inside! It’s all for Lewis’s own good I mean, he really didn’t know what he was doing.

Disagree with Peter. 100% Agree with Susan. I'm 80% convinced on Edmund. I think you went too far on 'aging them up' with Lucy. I don't think Lucy's actress should be over 10 unless they just really look much younger because if you have her at 12 in the first movie she will be a mostly developed teen by the 2nd movie and it's too swift a shift imo. I know this makes it harder to cast but I really have a hard time seeing your choice working in the role.

The biggest mistake the franchise made, in my opinion, was changing the original story too much. Prince Caspian was younger than Peter, who was probably around 14 or 15 in the book by then. Stupid extra story lines added. They didn't stay within the Narnia plot and this probably alienated many people. I know it did me.

I love edmund!! Favourite character! He is misunderstood and bullied but takes it out on lucy. When he realises his mistakes and sees who the witch truly is he humbles, softens and becomes Honourable and more so that peter whom I found to be so so so annoying and full of himself. All he does is push Ed around till he runs away to find some Turkish delight. Absolutely love him and he has the most character growth and the best redemption arc which makes him the best character. 😤
