    I have had diabetes for about 48 years now. My 3 month averages are all right, but recently I have had some very high blood sugars and it takes forever to get them back down. It is stressful. I have people I can talk to and that helps, but it still wears me out! Hang in there. You do a much better job regulating your diabetes than I do. I really appreciate your videos. Take care.

I find it gets harder to balance it all as you get older and have family responsibilities, more responsibility at work etc… but so important to find a way to get back into a routine, improve diet and exercise between all the chaos. Not easy to do but has to be done to feel human again. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

    I’ve noticed a couple of years ago when I actually started taking my health seriously that I have cycles and periods where my mental state just is not cohesive with my motivation to care for myself. The thing that really helped me was keeping track of when these periods happen and how long they last. After I did that I was then more prepared to be ready for those times and act accordingly. Just with everything else that comes with diabetes it isn’t easy but it really helps if you can do it.

    You are so great at dealing with your T1D! I like your videos so much! They give me inspiration, which is so important for me right now because recently I have had something kinda burnout too, after months of strict self-discipline (I've got my medtronic 640G this spring and was trying to count everything very thoroughly which turned out to be harder than it seemed to me)
    And about your food prep, this was a good decision to do)) My husband and I just a week ago have decided to do something similar, prepare our food and count carbs in it up-front)
    It was His idea, we even bought special containers with separate sections for different types of food to store) Now, I know how much I need to prebolus (I also use this way to prevent highs after meal) every time I want to eat and even have the ability to do this when I'm 5-10 min away from home, but already starving :D

      WOW - I LOVE what you and your husband have done here - this is INCREDIBLE!!!!! I just may have to steal this idea myself!!!! I hear you about the burnout and overwhelm - especially when starting on a pump and when you really feel that carb counting pressure - it’s so different to the pressure of multiple daily injections, isn’t it? Like, ultimately it’s great but also…PRESSURE!! Let me know how your carb counting meal prep goes- I am SO interested to know! I’d even love to know what kind of meals you’ve prepped! I have a question; but first here's the backstory. A few family members came over for a visit last Sunday and my levels kept going up (334 was the highest). I know these elevated levels were due to the stress of having my family over (I was acting like a tour guide). Anyway, after they left and I got home, I took a shower and watched a movie to relax. My levels lowered but kept lowering - to 58!. Such drastic levels were havoc on my body. I felt so tired for 2 whole days. How do you deal with extreme stress? 😕

    • @ShesDiabetic
      @ShesDiabetic  2 года назад +5

      Oh my goodness Cat!! I feel seen through your comment here! I’ve had this happen so so SO many times!!! What I’ve found is that in these times of stress I’m less conscientious of my own health (not pre bolusing, snacking without blousing, quickly blousing and then moving on and putting others needs before mine, just to name a few!) firstly, I think this is A OK! You’ve got to live your life and attend to more than your diabetes! Secondly, and more kind on a practical note, I try to eat a little lower carb in these instances so I take the percentage chance of a spike to a lower level. I also try to remember to hydrate as best as possible, and keep moving if possible too. I also try to resist the urge to rage bolus when things go high…but I don’t always succeed😜 All this is so so so much easier said than done. But those are a few of my tips. And at the end of the day- remember it’s okay if things aren’t perfect- I hope you had a wonderful time with your family as that’s such an important piece to our emotional well-being. I hope this gives you a little food for thought (no insulin required!!!!) big love to you and remember take some time to yourself to recover as that’s super important too!! 💙💙💙

      Oh my goodness! I have received a message from a luminous rockstar! I have a story that you and others may like to hear if you're feeling off centre. (You have so many messages to read so please don't worry about responding! It feels wonderful to write this, seen or unseen)
      A couple of weeks before I went to a hospital here in Ireland, my acting coach asked me to work on the play 'Angels in America', which starred the great Nathan Lane. My acting coach also asked me to think about a musical song to explore and so, I started listening to many many. I was so warmed to hear Hakuna Matata for the first time in a while, performed by Nathan Lane; who also played Timon in the original film.. As my dear mother was driving me to A&E, I said ' Hakuna Matata mum'. She asked me what it means and I laughed as I described it , despite the uncertainty of what was to come. 'No worries'. Because of Covid, all patients have to enter alone. And so, I sat in the waiting room with 'Angels in America' in my hands (I was naïve as I couldn't read, but hopeful nonetheless). The first nurse I met said he would have to take my bloods instantly. I noticed a gorgeous little tattoo on his wrist. 'Your tattoo is so cool' To my astonishment he said 'It's the Hakuna Matata symbol' and smiled. If I wasn't so tired, I would have bounced off the walls! As I entered recess and witnessed so much pain and suffering, I knew, in fact I instinctively felt that I would be absolutely fine. Now I seek the good and the 'what if there is another way', in spite of the warnings that our times are throwing at us both individually and globally. When I returned home, I finally began to read the play. Again, to my utter amazement, it ends with Prior speaking to us, his audience, with these words: 'The Great Work Begins'. I think I would be silly not to find hope and charm in all of this...
      And so, I hope our paths cross one day but for now, take deep care of yourself and Gather Gather as much as You give Andrea! I really do love all the tips and tricks which have propelled me lightyears ahead with my own diabetic needs.

    My son has had lots of trouble with sensors not reading. He is muscular so I don't know if that plays a part in not having much "fat" to wear it in. He has it on the arm as you do. You don't have any "fat" either. Any issues in readings? And what kind of watch do you wear to connect with your pump? Enjoyed the video. Sure wish my son had numbers like yours. His will go well a few weeks and then it flips and he needs a total of 20 units (occasionally more even) to get his bg to budge. This last cycle of that lasted 2 weeks and then it gradually starts to switch back--for awhile. Thank you for the video.

    Hi Andrea, really liked the video. Just a thought in people without diabetes blood glucose is variable it goes up and down as it should, I wonder looking at some of your videos that you are trying to keep the levels too narrow and stressing about it. I have had TD1 for about 50 years, gave up counting at 40, my goal is to keep the level below 11mg/l, my average is 7.3 and the Hb1Ac 6.2 at present, I don't prebolus because I know the glucose will go up as it does in all people and I know the pump will bring it back down in an hour or two.

      That's so interesting, John. I've always wonder about blood glucose in a person without T1D, and how it works. My oldest daughter is a T1D, is eleven years old, and growing up and up, as she should. She has this crazy highs sometimes and I wonder "may be this is ok to happen, may be her body needs that glucose level to reach the next inch?"

      Precisely - I took the pump off completely (unclipped) and then clipped back in for the second half of class. I don’t know why exactly but I find a hard unclip rather than suspending insulin helps stave off low BG - might just be a mental thing - but that’s what I do :)

      I hear you! It's...a LOT! In terms of finger pricks, I was doing 10-15 a day. That's just me personally, we all have to find what our comfort level is, I just always wanted to know what my BG was upon waking, before and after meals, and many times in between. It helped give me a tighter control and sense of safety, but again - we all have different preferences! I hope you find what works best for you! Andrea, one thing I find helpful is reading biographies of those who overcame great adversity not in a perfect or linear way, but real life. The best written biography reveals personal struggle and the very human frailties of doubt and failure, learning from failure, no matter how many times we meet it.
    I enjoy actually reading as opposed to always listening to audiobooks as it seems like I feel coming off the pages, that common humanity and hopefulness and determination that is threaded throughout all our lives despite hardship and setbacks. I always feel uplifted and part of a greater world outside myself.

    I just need to know this....but have you ever dealt with people that were very disrespectful and disregarding toward you and your diabetes? I have....a lot. Maybe it's just the state Tennessee have been living in...but believe this or not...I have been in a relationship with a man who has disregarded me several times and still continues to do so. Plus all other people I have been around down here have done the same. Saying ooh you have Diabetes, big woop. Everyone has trouble and claim they have way more. And saying things like ooh all you need to do in a day is exercise....Ooh...acting as if everything I go through as a type 1 is little to nothing. though I know from knowing these people not even one of them could even attempt or be able to make it through even one of the workouts I do. But just wondering if anybody else experiences this? Because it sucks and I hate them.for it and just need to move away and get away from here as quick as I can, I think. I've taken about enough. Guess this is what happens when you waste your time helping others out and empathize get over them too much and not yourself. Forget that I'm done with that. But everyone will do little to nothing j ng to help l me and think I have to devote all my time to them, beyond frustrated. Wish I never would have came here, to be honest. I've had enough trauma in my entire life to put up with any more. Should have been retired from all traumatic experiences by now.
