This song is so beautiful and sad at the same time. I think Mark has an incredible ability to express his thoughts and emotions at the time of writing each song. I can’t wait for his solo album next year.

If you really want to know the story behind Mark's "Child" song and MV, you should watch the special live performance showcase video, which also includes an interview with Johnny as the host, "MUSIC SPACE: 'Child' Live & Behind Story with JOHNNY | THE NCT SHOW" on NCT's RUclips channel. In the interview Mark explains a little about his inspiration and meaning behind the song. And SM also released a diary self-interview with Mark where he explained the lyrics in more detail and his whole writing process, called "Child’s Diary" also on NCT's channel.
The lyrics were wrote by Mark and the song is all about everything he has been through since becoming a trainee. Most of what you see in the MV is significant to his story from trainee days until now. Such as the backpack he wears is the backpack he has carried since he was 14, when he came to Korea to be a trainee and live on his own, away from his family. The song is about how he has had to grow up really fast and has spent most of his childhood in the public eye being judged by everything he says and does. People often expect him to conduct himself like an adult and never make mistakes, etc., but he wants people to remember that he is just a child who is still learning and growing and can't always live up to their ideal image of who they think he should be all the time.
As a member of an SM group, it shouldn't be a surprise that Mark is such a great singer and performer. You can't be an SM artist without having amazing vocals and dance skills. All of SM's artists were first chosen for their visuals, vocals and/or dance skills, and even the rappers get intense training as vocalists. That is why SM is known as the vocal powerhouse of the industry. Yes, Mark is way more than just a rapper, which is also one of the reasons why he is one of SM's favorites and he is involved in so many different groups and projects, etc.
SM Station songs are special songs that are released by SM artists or collaboration songs that are done outside of the members group, etc. Solo performances that aren't associated with a member's group or are just special songs are often Station songs. NCT Lab is a special project that was started at the beginning of 2022 that allows NCT members to release special songs that highlight their individual skills and the members get a chance to put their own ideas and style into the project. Mark was the first NCT member to release a song for NCT Lab.
Mark and Johnny talked about the making of the song/MV. Johnny said the outfit was very Mark-his beanie, jacket, and Jansport bag, which he always wore predebut. I totally agree.
Also, for me, the set has an indie, urban, raw vibe that really pulls me in. I love it.
I honestly don't think this song gets the recognition it deserves. It is an absolute masterpiece.
I have watched it so many times and it wasn't until recently I got what they were doing with the sparkly track suit.
He seems to be trying to hide himself. And then he is in this super sparkle outfit with a spotlight on him. Like he has been made to make himself very visible and then outside forces are shining a metaphorical spotlight on him not giving him anywhere to hide.
It's brilliant really.
I don’t think Mark openly shares the pressure he feels, but I can sense it in this song. It makes me so sad, but I love that he concludes the song/MV with "I'm saying what's on my mind" while running from people chasing him and reaching for the spotlight.
To me, this shows he’s come to understand who he is and what he wants.

The song itself is very easy to listen to and it could resonate with anyone, really.
There are some interviews that Mark did for NCT LAB around writing this song and it is truly amazing to hear how his mind works. His writing style and performance style are so unique and perfectly Mark. He has got a crazy schedule but I do hope he is enjoying the whole process of preparing for his solo album early next year.
(I have only been watch a couple fancams of the London show and I was in bits. I am so freaking proud of the boys and of the London crowd too for making them feel so loved. Are you okay today, post show??)
Mark initially wanted the title to be "Question," but the producer suggested "Child" instead. Mark said it’s good to listen to others' suggestions, and he learned a lot from the process.
